My Friday was yesterday. My employer gave everyone the opportunity to switch to 4 10 hour shifts in January. Mandatory for the plant workers, optional for the office workers. I took the option and those bastards have figured out how to keep me working there for a long time.
Just to be clear: you used to run the plant 5 days a week 8 hours at time, and then went up in the actual productive time by reducing the ramp-up/ramp-down time at the start and at the end of each working day by 20 percent per week?

I think so. It’s a govt/military facility so ramping up and ramping down at a leisurely pace plus several breaks meant a lot of down time. Also a work/life balance thing because a lot of the workers were having to work overtime on Saturdays. I say leisurely pace but that’s not to take away from them, this facility is the cream of the crop as far as production numbers and safety goes.. The other locations across the country look up to this one.

No need for apologies, I work blue-collar in industry and know all about the leisurely pace.

I started out as a machine operator and decided to be dumb and go for a bachelors. Now I owe $20k dependent on a Supreme Court ruling and 6 years after graduating I finally make about what I would’ve had I not gone back to school.
I went for a bachelors first (masters, really), but then ended up getting a floor job in industry. When I got my current job at 27 in my home town, I felt having been stupid when I realized that the guys I went to junior high with have been making above medium income since I left for school and have had their houses half paid by then.
