Don't want to get rid of mercer, though. Too early for that kind of end game. If next year middle of season we are saying the same things, I'll be open to the thought.

I do agree with your assessment otherwise though!

The 4 mil is rich and I said as much at the time but even if you do move him for an upgrade you still need another forward. I’d rather find a way to add something without subtracting a guy in the process.

Mercer came into the season playing well but this is starting to look like who he is. A third line player who's a 50 pt player on a good team. If you can trick a GM into giving up something big with him as the main piece, sure, take it. I just don't think it works cap-wise right now. His deal is looking, at best, appropriate for who he is right now.

But if Barry was still infatuated and straight up would do Mercer for O'Reilly, I don't think I'd say no, even if ROR is on the downswing. At least you're getting someone with more of a pulse at that slot.

Haula, at least you can say he's in line with his career averages. This is who he is for the most part. Ditto for Cotter.

It would be nice for the 4th line to matter but I don't think it does. Mercer and Haula not generating enough is really the biggest issue.

I think Mercer’s a 50 pt guy on a bad team. On a good team he’s probably more a 35-40 pt guy because he won’t get as much opportunity (granted he’s getting quite a bit with Timo-Nico)

Timo and Nico are also problems right now. Yes they’re both playing great hockey but 2 pts in 8 games for Nico and 4 in 8 for Timo isn’t good enough.

Anyone upset with the Hughes brothers tonight would be as ridiculous as being upset with Aaron Judge after Mookie Betts robbed him of a homerun. It's referred to as getting robbed and having a game stolen for a reason.

They played tremendous games. Probably the best of the year for both. There were also chances that were definitely chances blown by them and not robbed.

I mean…how much more focus and determination do you want overall? This team’s best players have been carrying the load most games, you can’t expect the “focus and determination” to be flawless every game. Other players in the bottom six, back end, and the goalie need execute in these types of games.
I’m loving this team and this season. Overall our effort has been very consistent. I’m not dumping on our guys. But it’s always about getting better.

Is there room to improve? Yeah I think we can finish our chances better and not just in this game but night in and night out. Given the volume of good chances we have been generating I would hope to see us scoring more.

People also talk about teams developing a killer instinct. I didn’t see that from us early in this game. Why is it we haven’t been able to win more than three in a row all season? Even when up against a team like Columbus?

We can be scoring more and not just in this game. It was true during the homestead too.

Yeah you just don’t get “goalie’d” this consistently. It’s very lazy to say a team is getting goalie’d this often.

They're not winning more than three in a row because no one outside the top six is doing anything to contribute. Back end is also hardly contributing any offense. And the goaltending is very consistently average, pretty much never delivers a performance like other goalies have against us 6-7 times already this year.

I don't think it's realistic to think the top guys can deliver more than they already have. This is about everybody else.

The 9 mil Dman that we also just can’t afford to lose has 0 pts in the last 7 games

second goal on Allen was not good either. He gave them no chance tonight. In what was probably about as rocking chair of a game as Markstrom had against Toronto.

The guy screening him was to his right. The puck comes right at him on his left. It looked like he just went down on that one.

Either he no-showed this one or he just sucks. Or Rogalski is a toxic virus. Take your pick.

First goal against was amateur hour.

Not going to defend Allen too much but he was out after the Colorado game on Dec 8 and returned to practice on Dec 16, a day before the St Louis game.

So he was out a week and had 1 practice before this game, since they didn’t practice yesterday.

This game and the Leafs game are anomalies in my opinion. I don’t lump them in with lets say the Sharks, Avs, Flames, Bolts shutout games. Those are two completely different sets of games in terms of team performances. I will take a game like tonight any day.

Yes. It is kind of weird how these types of games seem to happen at least once like every 4-5 games this season, but as long as it's more of the rarity than the norm I'm not going to get too worried about it.

Yeah, if this was a .500 team and these types of games were happening more often, it would be far more concerning.

But it's not so not really a big deal right now IMO.

Idk why when the team loses they only seem to lose in weird ones, but they really don't lose all that often so I'm not sure it matters all that much.
