I don’t like the system but Mercer was just standing there for a while & that’s not in any system.

Mercer starts in the default position, sort of off to the side of the slot, he was looking at the Avalanche curling from behind the to see if he needed to move low and be the second man applying pressure.

With the puck now on his side of the ice he expects the other winger or the center to begin to passively cover the slot as he is now on the active side of the ice. That’s why 3 players are all around the shooter but doing nothing to impede him.

So I do see this as a system failure as the Devils spend so much time figuring out what to do that they’re often behind the opponents who are just executing.

Colorado lead the league in PP opportunities and we don’t have the center who has zero PIM despite being 10th among forwards in 5v5 TOI/GP.

So it’s not shocking.
