I would have preferred to move Holtz over Zetterlund and Bahl over Okhotiuk, but if those are the guys SJ wanted then you make that trade every time.

Agreed. Probably they said nah on Holtz (our fault for not playing him). Holtz probably would have been happier in SJ actually ...you know, getting actual games in.

Still sad for Zetts tho. Hope he continues to pan out as we thought. Ill remember his last celly point just a few games ago.

CONDITIONS:

The conditions on the draft picks are as follows:

- San Jose Receives New Jersey's 2023 First-Round Pick: If the pick is a top-two selection, New Jersey will instead transfer their own 2024 first-round pick.

- San Jose Receives Conditional 2024 Second-Round Pick: Should New Jersey reach the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals (and Meier plays in at least 50% of Meier's Club's Playoff games in 2023) or the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals, New Jersey will transfer its own first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft to San Jose (top 10 protected), instead of its own second-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft. If New Jersey's first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft is a top 10 selection, New Jersey will have the option to instead transfer its own first-round pick in 2025 NHL Draft to San Jose. Should New Jersey transfer its first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft per the original condition (top-two above in Condition A), New Jersey will instead transfer its own first-round pick in 2025 NHL Draft should they reach the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals.

So basically they get another first if we go to the ECF in either of the next two years? That's fine by me.

Majority of Devils fans are happy they got Meier without giving up one of our top prospects or a top roster player.

Majority of the devils rival fans are not happy they got Meier without giving up one of our top prospects or a top roster player.

What else needs to be said?

Zett will get more of an opportunity now, I'm sad for Holtz who's still stuck in purgatory.

Zetterland's stature and play was low, wide and strong on the puck. Zetterland was pretty talented for a kid and chippy to play against. I hope this all works out.

Disappointment is mostly tied to the lack of extension. I don't think anyone cares about giving up the assets.

Who gives a f***? I said it before, I doubt Fitz makes this trade without knowing Meier's intentions signing long term here + you can easily flip him this summer if shit hits the fan. I doubt it does though

Part of the negative response feels like people still stuck with the rebuilding mindset. Just trying to hoard young prospects hoping to hit a gold mine so we can get better quicker. There has to room to play these guys though and you have to recognize the window of opportunity here.

Those first round picks could've been used in other trades, sure, but we generally see those go in rental trades which I'm not a fan of and Fitz said he isn't either. Even if we kept them it'd be years before they did something. Muk is a casualty of depth, or the promise of depth with Siegs here and Luke on the way. Zetterlund is probably the biggest blow IMO since he fits well in the bottom 6 and isn't as easily replaceable but I'll stomach it with Meier coming back.

Meier fitting our timeline, hopefully signing an extension and being with us for all our prime years of competing is worth what we gave up I believe.

We also keep our real top prospects that will hopefully make an impact sooner or later.
Are that many people really negative on this? Seems like most everyone is happy to get Meier.

It basically works out to Meier for Z + Muk + 2023 1st + 2024 conditional 1st. If you remove the last component, the deal is pretty much what everyone expected in terms of value. We paid a little more than expected I guess.

But you pay that price to get an elite player.

That is not a bad deal at all. Muk was pretty blocked. OK and Bahl were battling it out and Bahl won. Zetterlund was very solid but we held on to Holtz. This year’s 1st I do not care about. I need to see the conditions to the other 1st, that’s a bit annoying.

All in all, we got an elite player to battle against the Rangers in the playoffs. I won’t give half a **** about any of this if he helps us knock them off.

I f***ing love Zetterlund, it’s the toughest part of the deal for me, but I we didn’t give them that much.

Two 1sts is probably what it took to best other teams and Muk is easy to give up.

I’m not shitting on the guy at all, it’s just that he’ll has 2 years on his ELC next season. He needs a team that can give him ice time sooner than later.

Really like Okhotiuk too but we would lose him on waivers anyway.

I assume the 1st is lottery protected

No dog in the fight here...... you have to give the Devils the edge in this deal. 6m in retention and not giving up top prospects.

A long term deal 9m or below then its a clear win for the Devils no matter how you slice it unless they luck out on some of those 1st round picks. Even then it fills a huge team need.

Congrats.

Credit where credit is due for Fitz. He and Ray have both righted many Conte wrongs over the years. First Ray comes in here and acquires all of John Moore, K Palms and MarJo, all of whom were picked right behind Conte’s bust Yayo in 2009. And then Ray acquires Vatanen, who was picked after two other Conte busts in Urbom and Geli.

Now Fitz rights Conte’s final first round wrong by acquiring Meier, who was picked just three spots behind another Conte failure in PZ. Barzal was always my first choice as everyone here knows, but absolutely inexcusable for Conte to at least not take Timo Meier instead of PZ.

Thanks Ray Fitz for doing your part in cleaning up years of the messes Conte made and undoing all of his mistakes. Just sad we had to use assets to right those wrongs.

Now go out and get Yakov Trenin, who Conte passed on to take MBW29 and undo that mistake next.
Surprised DD is content with the fact we weren't able to get back 2018 NJD star defensive prospect Jacob MacDonald as the extra contract in the trade over Scott Harrington.
