Devils 2021 team discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part XXIX

wood is good and definitely has a key role both in the locker room and on the ice

the problem i think is that if he was just a little smarter and more skilled he’d be a bonafide star, he creates so many opportunities and chances that if his passing awareness was a little better and he had better stick handling he’d be a point per game player

so if he was putting up the goal numbers he has right now without the number of chances that he misses or doesn’t create when he was the opportunity we’d be satisfied

also i hope he stays on the team a long time because he’s my wife’s favorite player and anything to generate interest in the team

none of the older guys come here to 'talk about the team.'

Most of them are trolling or saying things so outrageous (such as this team is worse off now than it was in the 80s) that it isn't even worthy of discussion.

OMG who are these old people you speak of?? Are there 80 or 90 yr olds lurking around these forums. This is just batshit crazy

Is it just me or are we going to have a log jam in the bottom 6 forward positions ? Seems like we have enough prospects that look like 3rd/ 4th liners to make up about 4 lines . It’s the top 6 forwards I am concerned about and may need one more winger .
So far looks like Top 6 consisting of Nico Hughes Bratt with bubble guys like Zacha Sharangovich ( Shara looking more and more like a legit top 6 talent ) . Have to have one of Holtz Mercer Foote hit as a top 6 player. Would be nice to have one top tier winger. Here’s hoping that we have one that’s going to be a stud.

it's not just you. somebody's going to get traded, preferably wood

I think Kuokkanen has a long term role here, not on the top line of course.

Bastian is someone I think ends up washing out. Be tough kid, good motor, but not a lot of talent.

Hard to see him scoring enough to stay on a good NHL roster.
Tend to disagree with you here. I think mcleod bastian and wood are all protected from seattle. Perhaps this leaves kuok left out. Kuok has been the third guy on each line he has played on. Goal saturday was nice ( on a bad goalie though) but his other goals have been gimmes. I think we have many choices to fill his role moving forward. Clarke could do it right now IMO.
Devils have spent considerable time developing mcleod and bastian into very good PK guys. I think this was done with an eye to the future.
I find the expansion draft fascinating. I have different thoughts than most but we can check back later and see who is right

The AHL is a developmental league - for 3rd line players. The majority of top line guys in this league barely spend any time there at all. If talented young players show themselves as capable of playing in the NHL, or worthy of a chance at that league, it's incumbent on the team to give them a chance at it. And yes, that means being injury replacements, if those injuries are deemed to be long enough.

The reason you can't think of an instance of a player playing in the AHL harming their development is because whereas it's very easy to point to examples like Zacha of players who had lackluster rookie seasons and were overmatched, it's much more nebuluous to point to players whose team gave up on them or wrote them off.

Partially true.

I mean, of course first line 10A draft picks can kinda make the leap and they aren't really ruined unless they are rushed into a bad situation like Nail Yakupov - but I think it is especially true that defensemen should spend a season down there. I'm very happy they kept Ty Smith down there, because he showed up this year fully cooked, and could have done nothing good in the dumpster fire of last year.

You're right that it is tough to single out examples and I'm sure there are some - but what is the metric to tell that a player was 'ruined'.

Would Hunter Shinkaruk be a star today if he went straight to the NHL? Was it the AHL that held him back or was he just always going to be unable to play in a men's league? I don't know.

Yeah, there is no chance that they protect all 3 of those guys. Like, less than no chance actually (unless a major trade is made).

Seattle's GM and director of amateur scouting were Carolina's GM and director of European scouting when Kuokkanen was drafted. If you leave him unprotected I doubt he'd be a Devil next season whereas if you leave someone like Bastian unprotected instead I think there's a chance that Seattle still takes Butcher or Johnsson instead

Bleacher Report app has Nico out for tonight w a lower body...did I miss something, or is BR just trippin?

Nobody wants butcher or johnsson

An article on AJ Greer that gives some appropriate context to him as a person and what he struggles with.

‘It’s all in his head’: On A.J. Greer and the mental stress that comes with pursuing an NHL dream

Everytime I watch him play I see at the very least, a 4th line NHLer. A lowkey part of the NYI/NJD trade.
Agreed. I always thought he had potential to be more than just a throw-in. Big boy with some jam which is great for this group. And as we all know, power forwards can take quite some time to reach their peak. Who knows, might even become a 3rd liner. Seems to have re-found his scoring touch with BNG with 9 pts in 10GP.

I want him to hit, Miles Wood has never been that good at it but we really don't make the opposition pay the price in all zones. Only Bastian is capable of providing the physical presence at the moment.
