Devils 2021 offseason discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part III

I see if I can find the article that talk about the Devil's being the only playoff/good team in the area as the central reason for the contract. I think it was the NY Post but I'm not sure

I mean, if Brooks or Mushnick or even Everson wrote such an article, it would carry zero weight. The existence of YES and I think SNY was proposed at this time would've frightened Cablevision.

Im not saying snipers are less skilled, but its a fact that snipers depend more on being fed than playmakers do (since theyre usually the one setting guys up)

So when it comes to making an NHL debut, Holtz would have an easier time 'proving' he can stick vs Mercer, if all things were equal besides the differences in play style, because his biggest skill shines through more easily with one of two 1st overall centers feeding him

I was just saying that even as a player who is more of a sniper, they need to be able to find open space, recognize good shooting areas, and anticipate the plays their playmaker is attempting. While Holtz has done well in this area over in EU, it's a different kind of game in NA which is why I don't think it's as simple as just, "he's a sniper so he'll have easier time".

Now, he may be able to adjust very fast and / or with 0 issues but that's besides the point.

Well I can't seem to find what I was looking for but NJ did get a 20 year deal in 2004 reportedly worth about $500 million ..the Islanders did a 20 year deal in 2011 7/8 years later reportedly worth $400 million...I guess their threat to go to another network had a 100 million dollar deflation over those 7/8 years..

Or possibly the Devil got a premium for being a good team?

Or possibly that the landscape for televised sports and the future of it radically changed over those 7 years as streaming was becoming more and more of a reality and fewer people in the key demographics were buying cable TV or retaining it. But nah, it's probably those 3 Stanley Cups.

This Forbes article from 2013 claims the Devils and Islanders contracts have identical per season averages (at $24 million).

#6 New York Islanders

When Devils contract was up the Nets just moved to YES and the Mets were in the process (if hadn’t already) of starting SNY. Cablevision/MSG was desperate no to lose another team because losing the Devils would have left them FS New York (now MSG+) with only 1 team putting its viability in questions.

Isles contract dates back to the Sportschannel days in the 80’s and has been renegotiated a few times. If there is a difference it is probably do to the Isles having less leverage in renegotiations.

I saw it 20 per for NYI and 25 per for NJD...

The Forbes article claims 27 million per and 24 for NJ #6 New York Islanders

But I have seen 20 per for the Islanders in a few places

What about LW? I think Sharangovich is a RW and he'd have to play LW to play on a line with Sharangovich and Hughes.

Sharangovich shoots left and Mercer shoots right. They would be perfect on their natural left and right sides together if that's where Ruff wants them. Maybe he won't want them together at all. We don't know. There's going to be a lot of shuffling in the next couple years as this team becomes settled into what they are going to be. Where they play today doesn't mean that's where they will be in the long run. Some won't even be Devils in the end.

I think the Islanders deal slides up. It apparently was extended in 1999 and started at about 14 million and ends at 35 million. I’m sure the Devils does as well (that is typical of these deal) but all that has been reported is the average.

Man... I was just looking at Blake Coleman's Instagram Stanley Cup boat parade pictures...so damn envious.

That looks like a phenomenal time.

When the Saints won the Super Bowl my older boys got to ride in the car shepherding the float with Brees and the offensive linemen. It was nuts. Really great memories. My oldest got Brees to sign the ball he brought and then Brees had him run a route. Thankfully my oldest caught the pass. The population of the metro area was about 750-850k people and they estimated over 1 million people at the parade. Having ridden in more than one Mardi Gras parade I’ll say the Saints parade was much better.

damn, they cup 2 cup runs with him for 1.8M and won both….he was fun to watch while here though

now let's see how foote an mukhamadullin pan out

With the way, Holland spoke today about not being confident about signing Larsson I think it’s pretty fair to have him as a realistic option now if the Hamliton pipe dream fades with Chicago or Dougie going elsewhere. Severson/Larsson/Subban wouldn’t be a bad RHD side but Larsson would need to eat Subban’s heavy defensive 5v5 minutes and PK’ing (lol Nas regardless) if he’s brought back.

Cool. Did you live in NOLA?

So...
  • A 2023 3rd round pick for retaining $1.35M of Ristolainen's salary (not sure if from Buffalo or Tampa, which is opposite ends of the round...guessing Tampa)
  • A 2021 2nd round pick pick from NYI for retaining $2.75M of Leddy's salary
  • Vince Dunn for the Islanders 1st rounder

First off, I don't think we can even retain salary on two deals before the expansion draft - only one.

I guess the returns are OK on them, though using two retention spots also limits trade activity at next year's TDL. Not sure if that's really worth it for a TB 2023 3rd rounder.

I'm indifferent to the Dunn deal - don't know a ton about him. He was a bottom pairing defenseman in St. Louis this year and I'm not sure how high his ceiling is at this point.

Also not a fan of protecting Johnsson over McLeod.
Tampa doesn’t have it’s 2022 2nd or 3rd. The only picks they have left in the first three rounds in the next two drafts is their 2021 3rd and their 2022 1st (and presumably the idea is to allow them to draft some players at some point). I don’t see Tampa wanting Risto, he’s a righty but not seeing it, but that’s why it’s a 2023 pick.

Honestly this draft is a bit weak and 2022 looks better and the 2nd round should be a bonanza of over-age wonders so I would actively pursue 2022 2nds and less interested in extra 2021 2nds. The Isles have two 2022 2nds, I would take theirs.

I’m always vaguely sort of maybe interested in Dunn.

Relatively close.
I have a real close friend that lives near the Fair grounds/Race track. I try to get down there when I can haven't in a couple of years for obvious reasons. But I've been to a few Saints games...Though usually when I'm down there we drive down to Venice and fish the marshes for redfish... Love it. Not sure what I like more the fishing or picking up a sack of oysters and a case of beer after the fishing :)

Despite our philosophical differences if you make it down to New Orleans at some point send me a message and I’ll treat you to a good lunch or dinner depending upon what day it is.
