I've asked this before and never got an answer, but purely out of curiosity of how the rules work, when if ever can we trade Bastian? I know not this season, but next? When his contract is up and negotiating next contract with RFA rights?

I don't want to trade him or even start that topic, this is 100% just trying to understand how waivers work.

Tao Jones got it slightly wrong - Bastian would have to be offered on waivers to any teams that put in a claim on him and only once he is refused would he be eligible to be traded. This only lasts until the conclusion of the playoffs.

If no other team put in a claim, or if all other claiming teams pass on an offer to claim Bastian, he can be traded. But I don't know if that expires at the end of the season or if it carries over until next season.

Technically, "waivers expiration" is 30 days/10 games played, but I agree. I don't think that applies to trading claimed players.

It lasts until the day after the conclusion of the claiming team's season.

When is the Waiver period?

Waivers go into effect 12 days before the start of the regular season. They last until the day after a teams’ playing season.

Example: The Boston Bruins are knocked out of the playoffs on May 2nd. The waiver period for the Bruins would then end on May 3rd.

That's a good question for @mouser or @uncleben.

You got it, @Tao Jersey Jones!

Yes, New Jersey can trade Bastian, but only if they first offer him to any and all other teams who put in a unsuccessful claim back on November 25th, for the same price they paid to claim him ($56,250). If all teams pass (or if there were no other claiming teams) then Bastian can be traded.

The only part you were missing is that this ends after this year's playoffs.

CBA 13.20 (b) lays it out:
NHL CBA 13.20 (b) said:
A Player who has been acquired by Waiver claim shall not be Traded to another Club until the termination of Playoffs of the season in which he was acquired unless he is first offered on the same terms to the Club(s) that entered a claim when Waivers were requested originally and the offer has been refused.

He’s either a method actor or this is crushing him. If he was doing a Hanz and Franz pose then it’s a shame if he’s going to be punished. I trust people that have spent lots of time with him to know the truth.
Given what happened earlier in the week I don't see him getting much benefit of the doubt. If what he says is true I think it would be relatively to confirm that he has done it in the past without the racial connotations but it's still sketchy. Regardless, that seemed to be genuine remorse, not the I'm just sorry I got caught BS we've become accustomed to.

I can’t pretend to know. He seems remorseful and emotionally distraught. I’d like to think he’s telling the truth and this was just a misunderstanding but I can’t say.

Unfortunately I don't anyone ever will. I don't see any scenario where Subban will go back and be like "ya know what, that makes more sense than him being racist, maybe I was wrong"

I can understand why Subban would expect the worst. I have no doubt he’s heard plenty of awful racial slurs over the years. Hopefully younger generations will be kinder to each other.

All I know is his teammates didn’t stick up for him in the fight or afterwards. The team also did not defend him. The league went on with their ruling. The refs also seem to indicate something very seriously happened and of course Jordans reaction.

Pretty damning IMO.

I'm just catching up on the main board thread. Still 20 pages to go. But one poster called it this morning that Panetta would go the "body building flex" route.

I couldn't finish watching the Panetta apology past the "non-racial types" remark the first time but went back to it after reading @My3Sons post and I'll add that I would be emotional too, if I thought just lost my hockey career at that age (disclaimer: I've never played hockey at any level). Again I can't read into Panetta's response too much either way, but now that I've seen his team's and the official's responses, any benefit of the doubt is waning for me.

If you look a bit deeper into Mac's player card and you can see his play really nosedives right when he catches Covid the first time.

He has not been physically right since then. Gotta wonder if he really fully recovered from that.

Then you got the open question with his heel and why it still isn't healed. Was the surgery botched? Was the rehab? Just bad luck? Then you got the concussions. He definitely had at least one this season, and possibly two. Where does that factor in?

I believe if Mac can get healthy he can get back on track...but it's a pretty big if right now.

The team can not afford to gamble their season next year hoping both goalies get healthy, with the other older guy coming off hip surgery.

I think you can roll the dice on Blackwood to become a 1B, and maybe steal back the 1A job, but I don't think you can gamble on him being the outright starter with an old, gimped back up.

Apparently we need a 1C as well with our fortunes of late with netminders.

I think its pretty telling his teammates didn't come to defend him. That one of Subban's teammates quickly came off the bench to beat that kid's head in, and the ref that was right there gave him a game misconduct for a racial gesture.

Also really awful look by those fans throwing out racial slurs of their own. Nothing about that situation warrants benefit of the doubt right now.

Call me a bit of a cynic but something tells me it may not be the Hans and Franz impression that got him in hot water.

I may be in the minority here but I find it hard to believe that THIS ALONE would automatically be considered a racist gesture IF (big "IF") he's actually done this with other opposing players in the past and there was no outrage then.

Tbh, I think it may have been something ELSE that he may have SAID(that he ISN'T saying in the vid) that got Jordan and his team pissed off (and a game misconduct by the Refs who were close enough to hear anything he said).

Regardless, I would love to see a vid of this incident to either be proven right or wrong here.

Disclaimer to everyone here :

Please don't hate me for having a different opinion. I just want to know whether it was indeed the impression or if there was something else he said (that wasn't, conveniently, brought up in his so-called Apologetic vid).

If Blackwood isn’t the answer, then where do they find another goalie?!

There should be plenty of opportunities for wing. You may even improve the defense, but there isn’t much for goalies.

Panetta used "non-racialized players" in his "evidence I've made this gesture before" tweet. Who talks that way? That has to be taught/scripted right?

I need the Chico cotton candy gif for levity.

It looked to me like he was reading a statement. His eyes kept going off to the side a bit like he was reading from something.
