What I see from Calgary fans is that a package would have to start with Nico. I'm sure that's a classic overestimation of their own guy, but the reality is the value is closer than I'd like it to be. Personality aside, I'd be tempted to do that trade straight up.

Once I factor in what kind of person Nico is, I can't pull the trigger.
Contract situations alone might be another deterrent.

trading a similarly aged top 6 center for a top 6 winger is a bad idea, even when considering Tkachuk has been a slightly more productive player for their careers

I would think that Hischier’s contract status vs Tkachuk’s track record of higher production probably washes each other out. Either way, would love Tkachuk but not at the expense of Hischier.

The only untouchables for me in a Tkachuk trade are:
Blackwood, Smith, 4th overall, Hughes, Hischier
Borderline untouchables: Bratt, Mercer, Sharangovich

I would include any other asset we have in the organization in a package for Tkachuk.

Edit: If Luke Hughes AND Owen Power are off the board by #4 on draft day, I would take 4th overall off of my untouchable list.

I think you could acquire Matthew Tkachuk without moving Nico or Jack; but itd require the fourth overall

now that isnt necessarily a bad thing if Fitzgerald also wants to acquire a proven top-4 defenseman; we have the assets to do both (seeing as the fourth overall wouldnt require a huge plus on top of it)

I personally don't think that Tkachuk fits our timeline, also I think that you guys are way too optimistic in terms of assets we'd have to give up. I'd much rather let our prospects/draft picks develop, by the time they become NHL players (if they do), Tkachuk may already have negative value.

I think Tkachuk is interesting, but Id much rather have a top pair D from this draft. No way that im giving up holtz and the 4th
I think the fourth alone is enough; again its doable if Fitzgerald has plans to acquire another young top-4 guy

it certainly wouldnt cost fourth and Holtz

the 4th is our best shot at a true #1 dman so i don’t want to move that for a forward, but i think any of our prospects should be movable for tkachuk

Just for fun while im on break, lets play NHL GM mode

- sign Hamilton to a lengthy contract, something like seven years by 9-9.5mil

- trade fourth overall + Kuokkanen and Boqvist for Matthew Tkachuk

- sign Glendening as a 4C/PK faceoff guy

- Mercer makes the team and Bahl sticks

Bratt - Hischier - Zacha
Tkachuk - Hughes - Mercer
Sharangovich - McLeod - Wood
Johnsson/Maltsev/etc - Glendening - Bastian/Foote/etc

Smith - Hamilton
Bahl - Severson
Siegenthaler - Subban

I imagine Subban would be traded or just left to walk if we make s playoff run (which id expect)

has anyone here watched tkachuk a lot? Has his antics cost his team at all?

I can't speak much for hurting the team on the ice via dumb decisions, but the only thing that'd make me pause in trading for Tkachuk is this locker room stuff in Calgary. There were rumors earlier this season that there was a riff in the locker room largely based on him demanding the entire team play a hard forechecking, high intensity style of hockey...which doesn't exactly fit with what we have so far.

Fast teams should always be hard forecheckers; id argue we did decently in that regard last year

Is this a direct quote or just rumors? I can definitely see something like that come about because of how damn soft Calgary is...Depending on the context it could be a good or bad thing.

edit: nvm, you said rumors lol.

If he's telling guys to play with some energy and with some physicality he's not necessarily wrong. I agree though that the current NJ roster doesn't have much in that regard and pushing guys like Jack and Bratt and Zacha to hit people probably won't work. Guys like Shara and Kuokkanen and Nico will make an effort but won't scare anyone. The bottom six has some pieces and parts that will play hard (BMW line) but the fourth line of misfit toys (Maltsev, Boquist, Johnsson, Merkley, etc.) who knows.

If he intended it to be in a way that he wants the top guys to play with more intensity and not just finesse, perimeter guys I don't mind that. I don't want a Toronto-like team in NJ.

Yea I'm not saying his ideal play style is necessarily wrong, just dividing the locker room and working your way off the team based off of that is at least a sign of a not so good personality trait. You'd just want to make sure the same thing doesn't happen here.

How does a 23 year old not fit the timeline?! You can’t literally have an entire roster of 18-20-year olds.

That's not the point - the point is the assets you would have to give up to get Tkachuk fit the timeline much better. Furthermore, Tkachuk is potentially UFA in 2 years.
