Post-Game Talk: Detroit wins Game 3 3-1

Tried to ruin your day by looking up the nutrition facts (I'm a bad person), but... what? A McDonald's item not loaded with fat? I'm actually quite genuinely shocked.

Relatively speaking, anyway.

Don't worry, I'm also eating some extremely salty fries and a fish sandwich thingy. I went to the gym today, I have a duty to myself to eat all the calories back.

I appreciate the effort though.

Can someone explain to me how the third goal was soft? Datsyuk put it top shelf right under the crossbar, to the point where it hit the back support of the net and came back out. That's as good a shot as you'll see in the NHL.

Is this the main board? It's been overtaken by trolls. Anyone saying the Wings are gonna win in five is a joke.

However I have an Oreo McFlurry now so I don't care.

Not a troll. Life-long Hawks fan (short life so far though - only 24 :P). Just resigned to accept the logical outcome given the quality of play presented by the team thus far. Part of it is also certainly coaching, as Q has been made to look foolish by Babcock.

Game 3 was a perfect example of why you can't take games off like they did in Game 2. Cause you can play a great game, all things considered, and still end up losing on account of bad bounces or a few mistakes that get capitalized on.

Hard to think what the series might look like right now if they had bothered to show up to Game 2.

Just not enough there.

If you really think the Wings in 5 is a logical outcome I don't think we've been watching the same games. Or living on the same planet. :dunno:

It was a beautiful shot and I wouldn't call it a soft goal, but Crawford's positioning wasn't all that great. Plus it was a huge momentum killer

Nothing soft about it.

Well, I'll bookmark this page of this thread and shoot you a PM to let you know you were right if I'm not.

For sure. It woulda been nice if he had that one, but it also woulda been nice if the rest of the team didn't hit all those posts. He made some great stops to keep them in it.

Oh well, try again in game 4. This game was awful, but it was winnable.

This loss is pretty weird. I'm in good spirits -- usually after a loss especially with the current circumstances of being down 2-1 and game 4 on the road at the Joe, I would be a little more upset. But it really hasn't hit me yet. The only thing that really sucks is waiting for the next game which is Thursday.

ok, now I'm starting to worry

Rozi had a bad game. Those turnovers were brutal and costly.
Handzus should not play anymore, he now even doesn't take the faceoffs for Krüger.
Crawford has to step it up a bit more again. Those last 2 games were not good enough. Solid play isn't enough anymore.

Toews? Where is he?
3rd line? Still alive?
team has to cut out the frustration and start winning again. 3 out of 4 is not easy to do but they've shown they can do it.

I hope Q starts to juggle the lines a bit more now to get it going. That always worked and the change of the lines will create mismatches

Jayes - Toews - Kane
Stalberg - Sharp - Hossa
Saad - Bolland - Bickell
Shaw - Krüger - Frolik

positives:
PK is still outstanding
Kane shows lots of effort and he clearly shows he wants to win

This is surprise for sure the way things are going but look at the Ducks series against the Wings.

Perry 0 goals- 7 games
Selanne 1 goal (scored in the first game)
Ryan 2 goals
Getzlaf 3 goals (decent)

That's only 6 goals scored by their top 4 forwards in 7 games. What kept them in the series and allowed them to have 2-1 and 3-2 series leads was their depth.

Palmeri 3 goals
Etam 3 goals
Bonino 3 goals

Those 3 guys outscored their top four 9-6. The Ducks almost won that series based on their depth alone.

With the Hawks through 3 games were getting nothing major from our top 4 and nothing from the 3rd and 4th lines.

Toews 0 goals
Kane 2 goals
Hossa 1 goal
Sharp 1 (EN)
Oduya and Kruger with the other two.

My point is Toews might not score in this series and Sharp, Hossa and Kane at times are somewhat negated.

Bickell, Stalberg, Shaw, Bolland we need these guys to step up. The Wings are not dominating us they're just doing everything right to get under our skin, frustrating our stars and getting timely goals. The shot totals are actually misleading on our part cuz there's barely any quality scoring chances after game 1.

I didn't see the game (yet...I'm about to watch it), but listened from work. Didn't Stalberg score but had the goal reversed, and also hit a crossbar/post? The focus needs to be on Toews IMO. He's not playing like a #1 center. Intangibles aren't going to beat Detroit...goals will.

Our PP is truly abysmal and the Wings will continue to take liberties on us cuz they know we cannot score. Really wish Bowman would have seriously thought about brining in a true PP QB whether it be a forward or d but it's too late and this what we got.

All we can do is go back and concentrate on our strengths, scoring off the rush, creating turnovers in the offensive end, forechecking, converting broken plays and otherwise pushing the game speed to suit our game.

Game 1 Hossa PP goal and that's it.
Oduya goal d pinching,
Kruger broken play
Kane game 2 odd man rush
Kane game 3 pushing the play, Kane skating hard and Keith just throwing it hard up the ice.

We're not getting the PP fixed anytime soon, were not even getting pucks to the net or net presence as well. Just go back to fast 5 on 5 hockey. Wings will continue to run Interference so forget drawing penalties they do us no good. We play better when it's not expected of us to score and when the other team doesn't see it coming.

Some thoughts:

-Quenville and his ego is being out-coached IMO- Handzus was never a second liner and nor should he be. He should be there to help win defensive draws when Kruger and Bollad falter. You don't bench Stalberg. You don't mess with what is working. Stalberg-Shaw-Bickell should remain, Bolland back or not.i don't care how arrogant he is. You deal with it internally and not cause a disturbance when the third line had been our best on many occasions. Stalberg does hit- forecheck and play the sport of hockey well. Moronic to bench him. Stupid. Also, Crawford has been fine- Defence looks sluggish could be time to put Keith/Seans back- I was at both losses, was amazed the amount of times the D looked shaky.

The Hawks PP has decent movement, but its just horrid at the point. get Teravainen here please he could show these vets how to place pucks in precarious conditions ala Justin Shultz.
Toews is guilty of trying to hard, there's no sympathy with the refs. Simplify- drive the net, keep going is all he can do.

Really ? Shaw/Bickell/ powerplay isn't working.

Something has to give. Sharp back at center perhaps. Stack 4th line

No one is aware they have to step up more than #19. How can he call others out or try and be a leader with 0 goals. Be hard pressed.

Benching Stalberg was OK and it had no influence in winning or losing those games. Top6 has to score. As long as they don't score, your team will go nowhere.

I still don't get what that goal was waived off. That's as good as a screen can get

After watching the game again and calming down here it is.

The Hawks playing this style and game won't win anything. People shouldn't be surprised at what isn't and isn't being called, it's the playoffs, the refs swallow the whistle and lets the boys go at it. The Hawks aren't not built to match this style of play and choose not to. Fine if you not going to try to match the physical play of your opponent you have to have a PP that punishes them for playing that way, the Hawks don't have either. It puts them in a position that teams know they can punish them and if they take a penalty oh well nothing will come of it.

They also are not making goalies have to work at all to make these saves. Its becoming obvious that it's not that the Hawks running into these amazing goalies but their lack of making them work makes them look good. Jimmy Howard just had one of the easiest 39 save nights any goalie has ever had. He knows he can give up a rebound because their aren't people there and he can see every shot that comes in for the same reason. Just look at the play right after they pull the goalie. Handsuz gets the puck and gets right to the dot, there is not 1 Hawks between him and Howard and it ends up being an easy save on a wrist shot.

These things need to change. They need to get a bit of grit into their game, get people in front of the net, cause havoc, create screens, knock in rebounds. It's what was soo successgul in 2010, guys like Buff, Ladd, Kopecky, Brouwer even at times, would stand in front of the goalie and cause problems. Now whether it's 5v5 or worse on the PP it's 2 guys on the blue line, 2 guys on the boards and a guy below the goal line as if that's going to somewho generate scoring chances. Teams know how to shut down the offense, keep them outside and don't let them make those pretty passes across the zone and you can shut down their offense.

This isn't the regular season, the games are dirty and more physical, teams play you in 7 straight games and start to understand your system and start to learn how to stop you. It's clear the Red Wings have learned how to shut down the current gameplan of the Hawks. It's now time for Q to change things up and develop a plan that can't be stopped or one that the Wings have to adjust too again.

I am not on here to say this team sucks and blow it up, so don't put words in my mouth saying I did. All I am saying is that right now these team needs to change their gameplan because the puck possession, free flowing, team that can't punish people on the PP is going to get punched in the mouth with no worry as to any consequences. Babcock made a good game plan change, now it's Q's turn to respond.

It's wasn't even a screen so that's why it shouldn't have been waived off. If he had prevented Howard from making that save in any way it would have been interference, but he didn't Howard say the puck the whole way, made the initial save and the rebound bounced off Shaws leg, without a kicking motion into the goal.

Bobby Jet and I have been preaching this for 2 years now, it won't change.

The Hawks like to control/dominate the 80% of the ice that doesn't matter while ignoring the 10% at either end where it all happens.

I get that its annoying when other fans come in and post, especially after a win, really wasn't trying to rile anyone up. I'll stick to the main board GDT, it was just a little dead right after the game.

If you get it is annoying...then why do it? It is as close to trolling as you can get.

I said it before, but just in case,...........you cant go deep in the playoffs with an average goaltender. Crawfish aint taking it deep

And as I've said before. There are a lot of idiots on this board.

We have 2 goals in the last two games, yet the goalie is the issue.

Crawford is WAY down the list. He's played well enough under a considerable amount more pressure than Howard.

Crawford didn't play bad at all. The 1st goal was the only goal you can take issue with, he went down to early, which he tends to do and gave up the open net. The 2nd goal he stopped the shot and if Oduya sweeps the puck away from the net instead of trying to sweep it back towards the net for some inexpiable reason the goal doesn't get scored. The 3rd goal was a snipe from one of the best players in the world.

I have been saying it too, this team hasn't been built for the playoffs. I was going to see how this played out this year, it's not over yet but things aren't looking good at the moment.

I was ridiculed by at least one poster a month back for suggesting that playoff hockey isn't the same.as.regular season hockey.

I will be the first one to say that Toews needs to start producing, but I really have to wonder how people can say he has been "MIA" this series. He has been, by far, the hardest worker on the team. He has been constantly around the net and in the tough areas, all while being virtually shadowed by two of the best defensive forwards in the league. I can understand being frustrated by his lack of production, but he should be the last of our worries right now.
