Detroit Redwings Downfall

Impossible.. it has been explained repeatedly and daily that there is no point in making playoffs only to be swept. Sweep or not making it are the only two options. Not making the playoffs and picking 2 spots higher in the mid teens is better.

You need to turn the /sarc flag on for some folks.

It is pretty funny reading the "playoff experience is bad" posts. But between Yzerman and McLelland, there is a good chance that Detroit will avoid that particular iceberg for some time.

The strawman you are beating on isn't going to fight back.

Nobody is saying that making playoffs isn't good. I'd be thrilled if we could make the playoffs this year, even if we most likely would get our ass handed to us. At the same time, I am not sure why people pointing for silver lining in this situation is worth getting so worked up over.

"fun to watch", "prospering", "beast", "lights out", "awe-inspiring", "excel" and "monster". Wow, all this on a team that can't win a turtle race for the last playoff spot. You need a job on the Chamber of Commerce somewhere.

Lazy rebuttal. Don't confuse the bottom placeholders to the up-and-coming kids who are becoming game-breakers.

- Goaltending has been subpar since 4nations.
- Injuries galore. Which matters when a team is already short on depth until the prospects graduate to the NHL (Danielsson, ASP, MBN, etc)

It is fun to watch as you get to see the kids prosper. Are you even watching? How's the oxygen levels down there with your head buried so deep in the sand?

Hockey Night in Canada was gushing all over Kasper last night. And they are usually brutal to listen to.

Miss the playoffs by a lot="great draft pick, just what we wanted"

Miss the playoffs by a little="better draft pick, just what we wanted"

Make the playoffs="I told you SY knows what he is doing, team is better every year"

SY fans got all the possibilities covered.

Making the playoffs is the end all, be all! Any team who misses is in for a century of constant rebuilds, and doomed for eternity. 3 picks sooner is worse, not better... hey, why risk picking Mathew Barzal when Evgeny Svechnikov will be available 3 spots later! amirite?

If they make it Wings can win the cup! Anything is possible, right?

Or we can analyze what is really happening, the stuff that really matters is:

1) Prospects are still growing
2) The graduated kids (Raymond, Seider, Kasper, Edvinsson, AJ, Soderblom) are learning how to play competitive hockey
3) Plenty of cap equality to make an impact when the timing is right
4) Yzerplan needs to just keep drafting well and inserting kids
5) Have assets available to trade when the timing is right and it makes sense. He already has cap space available when the timing is right (see #3).

It's fun to shit on the Wings, but the fact is DRWs are improving each and every season. This season they may not show it with point total, but you already see it with the kids NHL development (Kasper, AJ, Edvinsson, Soderblom, etc). That's better than points.

Your talking points are stale. Do better.

Playoff experience is absolutely meaningless. It is better to pick 15th and not make playoffs then pick 18th and play because the only option is to make playoffs and get swept 4 straight. Most the first round playoff matchups are sweeps afterall.

The key is to make the playoffs and win it the first time. From non playoff team to cup winner.. then a dynasty to follow that. This is the plan! It's about 3 years away! All us doubters are going to be eating a lot of shit from 2029 to 2034 when Detroit wins 4 in a row. All the pieces are already here:

Cossa and Augustine as vezina nominees

Asp, Seider and Erd all Norris nominees

Kasper will be the 1C
Raymond will be the 1W and a 100 point player
30 year old Larken will be the 2C and in Selke talks

The rest of the first rounders taken from 2019 to 2028 will fill in all remaining spots. Buch is the next Kucherov because, today, you cannot prove he isn't! Larkin is as good as Eichel and Kasper is better than both.

All that is left is to wait. Once the 'filler' guys like Holl and Petry are gone, Yzerman will sign some really good UFA's to fill in the rest of the roster.

How do you even have a blue username on here? I would think the standard would be higher on HFboards. You are so bitter and unpleasant to interact with. It's a shame.

That’s a little over the top,

Clearly they are looking at the standings and not actual games. The silver lining is the kids are exceeding all expectations. I honestly thought AJ was going to be a depth 7th dman. I thought Kasper was going to be a 3rd line center. I thought Soderblom was a bust. I expected Edvinsson to be a top #2 at best in his prime.

Maybe I set my standards too low, maybe I believed posters who said Yzerman failed at drafting. Maybe I was questioning if Yzerman could draft outside the top 6. Those questions have been laid to rest for me.

EDIT: when I say Yzerman's drafting, I mean the scouts who he hired and trusts. Although GMs do interview players. I.e., he interviewed Bedard and Nate Danielsson, the story goes Yzerman was questioning Bedard about Danielsson. So doing his due diligence on Nate.

I literally wrote a nice comment to you last week.

Why get so invested in not your team? Why hyperbole and exaggerate to drag other posters down? Nobody is going after your team and talking shit (Look up my post history, I always said I want EDM to be the next Canadian team to win a cup).

Good leaders lead by example. Don't be the Sean Avery's of the community when you are in position to be a leader. Wear that blue username with pride. They gave it to you in good faith.

You ready to start talking hockey again?

Of course it’s better to make the playoffs than to pick #18.

But it’s also far from the end of the world. This idea that some posters have come up with that you MUST make the playoffs first and lose in round 1 otherwise you’ll never win a cup is so ridiculously overrated.

The leafs have had the “cup of playoff hockey” and how has that helped them?

Vegas went to the SCF their first ever season in existence.

The sharks were top of the league for how many years? Which part of the “playoff experience” helped them?

Washington took how many opportunities at the playoffs before they finally won? You think it was the 2008 playoffs that helped them win in 2018?

Same could be said for STL and the 2019 playoffs

All in all making the playoffs and losing round 1 (and you’re kidding yourselves if you think we were beating the Rangers last season) is pretty meaningless stuff for long term success

It's bad faith to equate playoff race and actual playoffs.

No matter how many times a team is in the mix, unless they get a taste of the actual thing, they will have no playoff experience when they finally are in the playoffs, and that matters.

Furthermore, being in the race only to repeatedly fall short sets the precedent of a losing culture.

A pick in the 10-16 range is not super valuable, as the hit rate is not great and the lottery odds are near zero. Franchise-saving talent is rarely drafted in that range. The consolation prize is not worth more than a playoff ticket.

The problem with Detroit is precisely that they lack franchise players. They have a good group of solid youngsters, but not one of them is really elite in my opinion, and I think many would agree. Which is to say that even if that young core learns along the way to a 14th overall pick, their upside as a group is not a cup contender, so it doesn't really matter.

What they really need is a top 5 pick, or at least to hit a homerun elsewhere in the draft. But their drafting philosophy has leaned towards high-floor players rather than homerun swings, as if they had the elite players already and needed depth pieces to round out the roster. We'll see how the cards fall in a few years. My bet is stagnation.

There’s been two sweeps in round one the last three years. That’s like 8 percent. If you’re in the dance who knows what will happen.
Upsets happen by teams with hot goaltending, tight defense, good checking. Basically teams that are difficult to play against.

This team is none of those traits. They’re soft, don’t check, are easy to play against, and have subpar goaltending. They also have the worst NHL penalty kill in decades.

This team isn’t upsetting anyone in the first round.

I'd agree with you if they weren't already in their "playoffs". Each game is a playoff game for them. Same thing as last season down the stretch when Raymond went full-on BEAST mode the last handful of games.

This team isn't built for the playoffs yet. Picking 3 spots (or whatever it will be this season) is more valuable than getting their asses kicked in 4 straight. It's only profitable for the owner. That's the only upside. I doubt Chris Ilitch gives two shits. I think he wants Yzerman to build a perennial cup contender. Making the playoffs for a cash grab does nothing for the future of the club.
I like this. From now on teams should just say that they've won "their Cup". Hold a parade, raise a banner and raise ticket prices. Genius.

Sounds like a bad GM doing the roster construction.

Can you name a team that didn't make the playoffs for more than 5 years and then won it in their first try?

For like the 80th time posting this:

The wings will not win the Cup their first playoff appearance.

It’s also pretty meaningless in the long run.

I’ll ask again… how have all these “playoff appearances” helped the Wings.

If Washington didn’t make the playoffs in 2008, would they have then not won the Cup a decade later? Did that playoff appearance have any single relevance on their future whatsoever?

I have no idea why 2008 is your cutoff line? But yes, all those losses got them to a Cup eventually. They were stellar at making playoffs. They usually had President's Trophy type teams and then shit the bed till they figured it out. I'd argue 2015 to 2017 had a big part in winning the Cup.

As you know, President's Trophy winners rarely win the Cup. It happens for sure but not as often as you'd think. Playoff hockey is a different beast. Some guys thrive and some guys disappear. Good to know which ones you have.

When you have the kind of run the Wings had or the Pens had, it is just hard to not accept the window is closed and hard decisions are needed. Teams need puck luck in the draft and even then, it is so hard to win a cup. But if you scout well, draft well and develop well, that goes a long way to competing for the cup.

We all know if the Wings sneak into the playoffs with like 86 points or whatever Dotter will be the first one trumpeting how this proves Yzerman succeeded and everything he did was perfect.

Nope... cup or bust. Immediate fireable offense!

I honestly don't care if they make the playoffs. Sure, watching them play an extra 4 games would be fun. But moving up in the draft would be funner.

What no they’d probably lose in like 5 or 6 and you’d say they were right there in the games and Yzerman has them way ahead of schedule because they had literally nothing in the organization in April of 2019.

Literal sweeps are pretty rare.
