So if they qualified last year in the final game and got hammered by the Rangers in the first round, that would save most GM’s jobs?

This team is nowhere ready to contend. That’s more alarming than missing out on the final playoff spot.

Another bad season, I never believed even for a second this team would make playoffs and I'm a longtime Red Wings fan. Detroit need real superstar. Trade for someone that becomes available, enough with developing draft picks. If EP becomes available, then Red Wings have to get him.

Except under Holland, Detroit was at the end of their run and were on the verge of r rebuild.

The Red Wings have multiple young players that are part of their foundation like Seider and Raymond who need to experience the reality of what playoff hockey is like, even if it means they get smacked in the head a few times.

It’s completely unfeasible that the plan is to make the playoffs only when they’re ready to realistically contend for the Cup again.

Plus, how do we know these vaunted prospects are going to be game changers that will immediately step into the NHL and make a difference?

Plus, an organization like the Detroit Red Wings going nearly a decade without the playoffs just can’t happen. Even the Dead Wings of the 70s and early 80s managed to stumble into the playoffs a few times.

Such a tired excuse for the lack of meaningful progress.

By year 6, “incremental improvement” isn’t good enough anymore.

Nobody said “must win Stanley Cup” by year 6. But making the playoffs in a League where literally half the teams make it in shouldn’t be considered a tall order by this point.

The fact that they’re on the verge of once again missing under Yzerman (while regressing) is a major indictment of his performance.

I agree you cant make the jump from a non playoff team to a real contender.

But last year the wings were extremely unlucky not to make the playoffs. And the hockey they played down the stretch was playoff caliber. I like the leadership and character of this team we just need to get younger and faster at this point. And I hope Yzerman realizes that as well.

The hockey they played down the stretch in March was humiliatingly awful. Those back to back losses against the Coyotes in which they were outplayed and outshot along with other ridiculous losses to the Sabres and Penguins were downright embarrassing.

Detroit had a 9 point lead from the cutoff point at the end of February last season and their 7 game slide erased that - just like their 6 game slide and losing 8 of 10 this season has had the same effect.

Now Edvinsson is getting the amount of time he needs. You’d guess time would also be spend with asp.

When young players are in such key roles - tough minutes above 20 a game: the nhl season itself is a grind and they’re facing folks who have been in a pro workout regime nonstop for a decade. It takes a handful of years until the consistency can push through. It’s just really difficult for young players to be both great and consistent because of the physical difference in mature opposition and the physical toll an nhl season takes.

In 3 years you’ll have Seider at 26/27, Edvinsson and Raymond at 25, Kasper and asp at 23. I think this is a good time to see some consistent domination out of the group, increasing in years beyond. If you’re fortunate with the surrounding cast you could certainly do it quicker.

The ages of the guys in the roles that are taking huge chunks of the icetime are a good way to evaluate the ebb and flow of a big team. If your team is giving 20 min + a night and top pairings to 2 dudes 23 or under then you’re building up to something. It isn’t a failure of management - the players are getting the time they need to grow.

If they are building for 3 years from now then they better trade Larkin…

Imagine doing a rebuild that takes the entire prime of Larkin, your teams 1C.

Just to come out of a rebuild to need a new franchise 1C the next second.
You realize it’s year 7 with Y next season?

If you want the quality of players that you draft instead of trade for, because this quality is rarely available and cost prohibitive.

This is how long it takes. In detroits case there was a hefty bandaid to rip off in terms of old commitments such as Abdelkader and a handful of others.

It takes years of picking the guys then years of developing them. If they’re taking icetime it means matured players are not taking it. There is a cost to consistency. The strategy is evident in icetime distribution.

Yzerman could easily put the young guys on the market and get matured players in return. I would not recommend it.

Plus: the wave of talent right before the pandemic created a scenario of haves and have nots.

Why would a team without McDavid, Matthews, Eichel, or MacKinnon go out of their way to expedite a return to playoff contention? Just give your young guys time, positive environment as possible, and let the stacked teams beat themselves up a few years. Theyre depleting their future to win now. They don’t have the opportunity to give top pairing to 2 guys under 23. Their guys will be old and spent when Detroit’s are in their prime.

“sour patch baby” is such a good term though. You gotta use terms like that in a real word battle, it sounds insulting but you also gotta stop and think “wtf?”. Really throws you off your game.
