Is there anything about his hockey skills that make you think he will never hit 40 points during a normal NHL season?
He's been a good addition to the team since getting traded.
I never say he never will, I said he never has.
My point is that the deal is not a steal or anything, it's an okay contract for a 3rd liner who averages around 0.5PPG career wise at 25 years old.
Since August. 2020, 9 players have signed a contract in the 3.75M$-4.25M$ range.
Hoffman: Proven 25 goal scorer, Career 0.717PPG
Granlund: Career 0.65PPG
Stasty: Career 0.7519PPG, he did slowed down the last few years thought.
Toffoli: Proven he can score 30 goals, Career 0.598PPG
Verhaeghe: Career 0.5819 PPG
Foligno: Career 0.504PPG
Jenner: Career 0.464PPG
Beauvillier: Career 0.457PPG, 21 goal career high
Lafallo: Career 0.4772PPG
Fabbri is a career 0.4963PPG 18 goals career high.
You can say that his production is around what you would expect from a 4M$ forward, but it's nothing special here. Plus you aren't really paying for potential at the age of 25, the player is what he is.
Thus like I said, the contract is far from being a bargain. It's ok, but it's not a like Red Wings have signed him at a steal of a deal. Overpaid might have been a strong term thought, I'll give you that.
