Not that the deal is terrible, but why? Won't the Wings have a bunch younger players pushing for spots in a few years?

I disagree with the narrative that he's a useful utility player. I think he's not an NHL-quality player and ideally would not want him on my team in any role

Seems really unnecessary to commit 4 years to a fourth liner, even if the cap hit isn't outrageous.

Matt Martin signs for 4 and now Glendening. Wonder if this will be a trend, locking up 4th liners with term.

Pretty great signing there. 4 years for 1.8mil per season. Detroit always relied on Glendening at the end of all close games they were winning.

I regard him as one of the best 4th liners in the game today. Reliable defensive forward. Played over 250mins of penalty kill time, 5th in the league.

Most of the TOI leaders get paid 2-3 times as much. I think he's worth more and Detroit got a steal of a deal.

It's not a bad deal. Only problem is what about the young guys.

All these deals are great and all but with all these long term deals young better guys with two way deals or one way cheap deals wI'll have a hard time getting on rosters if 4th liners keep getting these deals

From a bird's eye view I don't mind your logic.

... But even a bird would wonder why Holland also signed Miller and Helm. Granted Miller is only signed for a year, but he's the best penalty killer of that bunch.

Do they need all three?

Nope, in reality there's no prospect who could bring Glendning toolbox on the table at next 4-5 years.

We have skill prospects and they fight for different roster spots.

You also don't see inside the lockerroom. He is one of our new leaders on the pack.

Some Gledening memories about his importance:

Some Corsi analyst already posted how bad possession player he is, but you can't read everything from Corsi. These 4th line Defensive Zone specialists are one of them.

So you'd rather use up space on Glendening rather than give some time to develop your young players who are ready, like Mantha, AA, Jurco, etc? Not seeing the logic there.

Like I said, I don't see why you need Miller, Helm, AND Glendening... but, those three players do not take away from Jurco/Pulkinnen/etc.

Those skill guys won't ever see the fourth line because they can't and shouldn't be playing that style.

I think they even tried it with Jurco, doesn't work.

I sat here for a few minutes thinking, 4 years? Seriously? And then realized I was getting mixed up between Clendening and Glendening.

They are not centers and/or defensive players.

Fight for a different spot/role.

No-brainer thing to understand.

Yep...

Forward hierarchy:

Others
12. Glendening
------------
13. Ott
14. Miller
------------
Prospects not ready

When veterans are signed on the "pressbox" and jump in on injury cases, prospects can play at Grand Rapids on bigger role. Othervise they shoud sit on the bench.

What is this "all these" ?

Our bottom6 at the moment is proably:

Helm, 6 years
Glendening, 1+4 years
Sheahan, 2 years
Jurco, 1 year
Miller, 1 year
Ott, 1 year

I wasn't speakingly solely about the Red Wings, though Helm is of course another example.

Locking in a 4th line player for the next 5 years seems pretty bad.

I mean, I can see the point if it was just some 4th line plug, but Glendening has a set of skills that a lot of 4th line guys don't possess. Good on the dot, good PKer, used in shutdown roles. Very reliable player. Don't mind the signing at all tbh.
