I'm guessing they just rotate again.

But why? We need to decide who is going to be the starter in the playoffs. Raanta has looked much better than Freddie, and the team plays better in front of Raanta. If the plan is to start Raanta in the playoffs, he'll have a week between games(?), maybe more.

In addition, Thursday is a must win game for the division title, so we should start the goalie that's produced better results.

I agree that Raanta is currently the best option for the playoffs. That said:

a) I don't think it's been decided yet despite Raanta looking much better, and I think Rod is likely to use both in the playoffs.
2) Raanta more than most goalies could use some time off if he's going to make a multi-round run in the playoffs. Give him that week off, especially if they need to open with Andersen.
d) They are likely going to Andersen at some point in a multi-round run either due to injury or after a bad game to shake things up. Andersen needs to get a little work for that as well.

So you’ve got to go with Raanta on Thursday, yeah?

because that would make too much sense. I want Raanta in goal tomorrow, too, but am fully prepared for Freddie.

Honestly Andersen and Rantaa looked decent in their last outing. Both were shellacked at various points in their games, Andersen more so. If they play like they did in their very last game, we have a chance to win a round, possibly 2. We don't require elite goaltending but we do need average goaltending.

I agree Rantaa has been better this year, but we all know Andersen has a higher ceiling. We also know that both of them will see time this postseason.

But morale of the story is I'm happy to see our goalies return to Earth somewhat.

Because that's what they've done and said they want to do? I'm not saying I agree or disagree, though I'm not as worried about Freddie as most. I think they'll need two to three goalies in the postseason anyways.

I can absolutely see the argument for starting the best guy on Thursday but I'm not convinced they see anyone as the obvious best choice.

Man, 3 goalies in only 4 games? The wheels really are falling off :sarcasm:

To me, the measure of our goaltending is that they don't give away freebies. Make the other team work for grade-A scoring chances. Whoever can do that is good by me.

Shout out to Koko for his solid play. He had a bunch of detractors (perhaps some still lying in the weeds here) early on but his play over last few months has been terrific & hopefully is the turning point for a long and successful Canes career.

His skating is significantly improved y/y, is defensively sound and is a physical presence that is needed in our C corps. Now, if he can be a little more selfish and shoot more he surely will be a 20+ goal scorer moving forward.

now he just needs an 8 point game against Florida to get to 50 points!

It’s less that he is too unselfish and more that he just takes too long to shoot. He needs a quicker release. Part of that me be mental and thinking pass first I suppose but it also just physically takes him longer to shoot than most.

I said early in the year that Koko looked better than the numbers but that he'd eventually have to produce too. I think he took a lot of steps in his development and did start to produce better. I think he even got better as far as looking to shoot more. But I agree that's still an area that he needs to continue to improve on. He has a pretty good shot when he gets it off and he goes to some areas that will serve him well if he does improve even more.

ah, a detractor?

His stats are markedly improved and pretty consistent since the very slow start to the year (and has PP as a winger right now which doesn't allow one to bolster their stats):

He will only get better in succeeding years and no doubt will improve his shot, release speed and skating. Watching him during games at the PNC you come away with a significant compete level that will drive him forward to higher proficiency. He has more passion than many of his colleagues.

I don't think he's a KK detractor. Quite the opposite, he's been a big fan of his.
