The Tavares deal was terrible. Say what you want the length of the term and amount of $$$ for a declining talented player. Paying that money for him moving forward is ridiculous. You have talented players losing in the first round since 2004 and no Stanley Cups for 55 years something has to change. The results of the Shanaplan years is not working! Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity ! Signing Simmonds and Clifford were horrible. Look what Perry signed for in Tampa and guess who is going to conference finals! Ray Charles could have seen that he was clearly better than those two plugs. Might as well start planning something else other than watching the Leaf's play in late May again next year. The good news about being 70 is I at least got to see them lift the Cup albeit it was 1967. The Montreal series last year proved that playoffs are different game than the regular season. A wounded Carey Price and Shea Weber took a clearly weaker Canadiens team to the Stanley Cup final. Look at their draft cupboard the next few years and look at what Dubas has and there my friends is the answer. Building through the draft. Isn't that where Matthews, Marner, Reilly and Nylander all came from before Dumbass was at the controls? Clearly a mistake is only a mistake until it is corrected and cleaning house in management would have went along way to start moving forward. Matthews is not a lock to resign going forward and if he does the $$$ will make the team weaker salary cap wise. Anybody feel comfortable heading into next season with our goaltending?

Kyle Dubass traded Kadri for Kerfoot.

That alone gives him an F on the test
Kerfoot only? Barrie was one of the best puck moving, point producing RD for years before the trade. Not really Dubas‘s fault that Babcock tried to change how he played. Kadri was my favourite player on leafs at the time but after costing us 2 straight series it was time to try something else. Everyone could see we needed a good puck moving RD and that’s what he traded for.

I don’t care who the GM is, coaches are, players are, as long as we win. If Dubas got fired I would not lose a second sleep but I personally think he’s built a good team here. There’s posters on here that give him more credit than he deserves and there’s posters on here that hate him more than he deserves, that’s what being a fan is all about.

This is what Dubas inherited that included 5 X top 7 overall picks from previous drafts ... #7OV Kadri, #5OA Rielly, #7OV Nylander, #4OA Marner & #1OA Matthews as well #1G Freddy Anderson. As well as a roster full of young players and rookies. The 2nd highest scoring team in the NHL, coming off a franchise all-time best 105 regular season.

Hyman ----- Matthews (34 goals & Calder) --- Nylander
Marleau (27 goals) -- Kadri (32 goals) --- Marner
JVR (36 goals) -- Bozak ---- Brown
&
#1D Rielly
&
#1G Andersen

Toronto Maple Leafs 2017-18 roster and statistics
- Head Coach: Mike Babcock (49-26-0-7) = 105 points & 6th overall in NHL standings .. #2 OA in GF 277 & #10 OA in GA 232 with +45 Goal Differential.
- Result: Lost in round 1 (Boston in 7)

Kyle Dubass traded Kadri for Kerfoot.

That alone gives him an F on the test
Didnt Kerfoot play more playoff games than Kadri?

I'm good with the management, coaching, and defence.

Picks/prospect development, forwards, goaltending need work.

Despite some jitters early in his tenure as GM, Dubas is growing into the role and is becoming a hard-nosed negotiator: Muzzin for Durzi, Hyman and demanding the oilers 3rd, Gio, not bringing back Thornton, etc. Even if Matthews walks in UFA, give this man 5 more years and I think we have a generational GM on our hands! Those are rarer than generational players.

People who succeed don’t beee excuses

The guy has done a generally good job, but he’s yet to figure out the art of building a team. He’s learning. Threads like this are counterproductive.
How so? It's just a discussion forum and nothing anyone says here ever has any effect on the team.

I find it really hard to grade Dubas to be honest.

He has changed his approach drastically from focusing on skill guys, to going for grit, and now going for experience.

Most of his free agency deals have been good, some have been damn near miraculous, and some have been atrocious.

On the trade front, there haven't been any home runs, but a couple of really good ones, but we've also had a bunch of blunders.

Player signings have been ok, but the big ticket guys seemed to have gotten all of what they wanted while role players have been forced to feed off the remaining scraps.

I think Dubas has significantly improved as a GM recently, and it is showing on the ice as well as behind the bench.
Yeah me too. I guess I'd say that so far he's done more good than bad. If he's learned from his mistakes then we should be good and if not, then we're in trouble. I wish I knew his thoughts on a couple of things and without that knowledge, it's impossible for me to evaluate him.

The Tavares deal was terrible. Say what you want the length of the term and amount of $$$ for a declining talented player. Paying that money for him moving forward is ridiculous.
You just described the vast majority of UFA signings. Almost everyone was thrilled when we signed Tavares and now, almost everyone is saying Dubas is an idiot for signing him.

Oh well, I guess I shouldn't expect better from people posting anonymously on the internet ...

I have remained firm in my belief of Kyle as our GM. I think he is progressive, and the value he places on culture, opportunity, and transparency have allowed us to attract many players on sweetheart deals to compensate for a bloated top end of our cap construction. Gio signing well below market value is just the most recent example of this. TOR ticked every box for Gio. To the point where he decide not even to go to July 1 to see what else was out there. That doesn't happen if the culture is poor. Kyle plays a large role in establishing that.

He has made his fair share of mistakes in his time. But the good far exceeds the bad. It's not even close really. I am so thankful they are bring him back next season. He truly is a top 10 GM in the NHL already IMO. I see absolutely no reason to move on from him at this point.

Watching Kadri smack all that racism with a hatty to put his team up 3-1 in this minor thing called the playoffs shot a lightning bolt of pure hatred into me for Dubas.

Perhaps he's a good GM when it comes to everything a modern GM needs to be able to do....but when it comes to simply having a knack for picking out guys who can win you playoff rounds, he sucks ass.

Take his Justin Holl loving buddy with him.

You can understand why Dubas continues to build around his inherited core of the 3 Amigos and Morgan Rielly, because as long as Matthews keeps earning the Rocket Richard as leagues best goal scorer and Marner keeps flirting with 100 point seasons and Willy scores 30+ goals and his defense is built around #1Dman Rielly then Leafs are safe to continue to make the playoffs which = job security for Dubas.

The same players that were the teams top scorers in 2018 continue to do so in 2022 and are no longer 19-21 years old but now through time and maturation entering their primes at 23-25 years old.

Previous Leafs GM's set the table for him and turned over a +100 point team that lost in 7 games in round #1 and Dubas was tasked to get the team over the playoff hump, by filling out the roster around the core that carries the team and are its best players then and still today.

Those keeping score at home know Dubas playoff record of advancing beyond making the playoffs is 0-4 with losses to Boston, Columbus, Montreal and now Tampa Bay, the last 3 as the favourite with home ice advantage. Some Leaf fans believe Dubas is passing the test he was assigned, others recognize he is wasting away the best years of this core group during Leafs compete window, that could slam shut in a couple season when these young core players contracts end and they hit UFA status.

Previous Leafs GM's set the table for him and turned over a +100 point team that lost in 7 games in round #1 and Dubas is tasked to get the team over the playoff hump by filling out the roster around the core that carries the team and are its best players then and still today.
This is the only truth. He has shown nothing to suggest he deserves to fill it out at this point.

The core 4 / 5 is not the problem. Dubas is just wasting it with his soft decisions.

How so? It's just a discussion forum and nothing anyone says here ever has any effect on the team.

First, everything in the OP has been discussed numerous times in other threads. No new ideas, just a rebooted argument.

Second, a thread made to defend Dubas is just going to fill up with posts arguing the opposite.

Except now that he is in Colorado, he has done a complete turnaound with his demeanor and performance. That is on the coach and GM for sure. The fact that he has done that in Colorado means his bosses here weren't good enougn to rein him in.

That’s not necessarily true. Sometimes a chance of scenery is needed to wake a player up. Let’s also not forget Kadri has earned himself a lengthy suspension in the playoffs while being an Av as well.

Keeping Keefe is the biggest reason to move on from Dubas.

I remember the day he signed vividly and there was speculation it was for $70m/7yrs until it was confirmed $11m AAV.

Even in my buddies group chat we all thought that was $1m too much but like Dubas we didn't foresee the big 3 to get greedy when their contract time came around, especially after the now infamous Shanny speech about taking hometown discounts.

Also, nobody predicted a pandemic that would freeze the cap when it looked like it would jump 2-3 million a year annually at the time.

Dubas' fault is standing pat and even doubling down on the greedy core when they've proven nothing but greed, repeated failure, trying only when they feel like it, and a propensity for choking come playoff time.

So ignore the thread, problem solved. Or I guess you could ask the mods to merge this thread with the one that has Dubas being fired in the thread title.

If that other one had a neutral title like "All things Kyle Dubas" or whatever, then this thread probably wouldn't exist. But again, nothing discussed here has any impact on the team so there is no reason to worry about this being "counterproductive".

I didn’t say it effects the team. The OP wants to espouse the greatness of Kyle Dubas, but this thread will backfire. That’s what I meant by counterproductive.

I am so tired of listening to how tough Dubas had it when he became GM.

He inherited a 105 point team with a plethora of young talent and ample cap space. Yes, the Marleau contract was shitty, but it was short term and was not a cap issue until Dubas made the decision to sign Tavares knowing Marleau was on the books and 88/34/16 all needed new deals.

The leafs had their best season ever, 4th in the league in points, 2nd in goals scored, all while having below goaltending. With average goaltending the argument could be made that this team could have won the president trophy. This definitely should earn him another season behind the bench imho.

Did you not watch the playoffs?

Haha if you say so. Calling a thread counterproductive implies that other threads might be productive but the thing is, they're all just anonymous discussions about a hockey team.

Cliff notes: No thread ever is "productive".

My only gripe with people saying “can’t trust Kadri in playoffs”, is Kerfoot can’t be trusted either. Kerfoot blew game 6.

Overall Dubas is a good GM. Not amazing but good, maybe even great. ‘His’ drafting had been supreme and his trades/signings have been mixed. Really bad or the most shrewd of the off season.

If we fire him we will regret it. Please, Never go back to Burke Nonis time.

Only men I woulda brought as a replacement was Gorton, Yzerman but those ships have sailed

I don't mind Dubas, and I'm okay with giving him more time to see things through.

One thing that always tempered my like for him is how he was touted as the next greatest thing and he was going to revolutionize the GM position. It's been anything but.
