"No disrespect to any centre I’ve played with, but Davey’s by far the best player that I’ve played with,†Weise said.

Philadelphia could use a #3C, Montreal could use some temporary cap space and are too small up front. I know Philly still has Schenn and Cousins to sign and likely can't take on Desharnais' full $3.5M this year. So maybe Montreal retains a bit.

Desharnais (@ 2.5M) ~for~ 2017 2nd round pick

Not only can't we take on DD's full cap hit, we functionally can't take on any of his cap hit. We have something like $8M left with which to sign B. Schenn, Weal, and Cousins, and possibly sign Manning, Hextall's on record as wanting to preserve $2M in space for flexibility's sake, and we may still need to make moves in order to get Provorov and Konecny on the roster, if they end up winning roster slots. Even without DD, we're almost certainly going to have to move someone to make it to our target cap number. (The way I figure, Schenn's probably going to hit $5.25 per, take the $2M Hexy wants to save, and that's $750K for Weal, Cousins, and Manning. Unless we have a deal to ship out Read, MacDonald, or Streit, we're in an awful tight spot.)

The only way we could add DD is if you were taking back a big salary of ours, and you don't have the room to do that, either. There's just no way to make the money work.

I could see Desharnais getting traded for a lesser cap dump and mid round pick and then the Habs would buy that contract out. Would have to be less than Desharnais' hit though.

The other team moves out a player they're not using and takes a small amount more salary for a player they will use. Not sure if it would work here but I can see that happening somewhere.

To be fair, that line was absolutely on fire back then... Weise-DD-Fleischmann, didn't last though

DD won't fit in phily

Only way DD returns a 2nd is if we package him with a 1st but if Weise's marketing campaign can get us out from DD without retaining and without packaging a pick or prospect he's free to a good home and Dale deserves his number retired and hanging from the Bell Centre rafters

bergevin couldnt find someone to take desharnais for peanuts at the draft, but he is gonna return a 2nd with a 1m discount?

I think it would look more like this

to ARZ: Desharnais (1M retained)
to MTL: Conditional 4th rd pick

Wasnt it Kruger in CHI?

Looking at Vans roster from his time there id say likely it was either Santorelli or Dalpe most of the time

Weise's most regular centres over career (40+ minutes):

Desharnais: 811:16
Lapierre: 481:09
Malhotra: 467:05
Plekanec: 233:10
Galchenyuk: 151:44
Ebbett: 97:55
Dalpe: 94:52
Schroeder: 90:47
Santorelli: 86:42
T. Mitchell: 68:30
R. White: 51:36
Sedin: 50:10
Drury: 49:58
Hodgson: 48:54
Kesler: 47:42

I'd rather not retain any at all and take a conditional 7th.

As for Read, if he had one year left, or we didn't get Shaw, perhaps. From Montreal's POV, it's about clearing the roster spot and removing Therrien's pet.

We will take DD if you take Read. Cap hit are $125,000 different.

It's not ideal, we'd would be looking to add size up the middle using our extra picks. Read is only 185lbs and a winger, good two-way player though and the term is not bad.

Would be worth considering since we have plenty of guys who can play more than one forward position. Would other Flyers fans consider this?

Was he trying to move Desharnais at the draft? This is my first time hearing this.

I think that what Weise is trying to say is this;

If Desharnais was to go and play pick up hockey where players go all out on offends but do not play physical or even give much of an effort defensively, then he is a great hockey player.

Which in reality he is. The only problem is that hockey is an all round game. Desharnais is one of those tweeners who have a hard time finding a spot. Not quite good enough all round game to match up against other teams top two lines and is a bad match up to play a bottom six role unless your team runs three offensive lines. Teams like to have size and be tough to play against in their bottom six.

Nope, you could try reading the article... or even watching a game or two.

“He just does so many things well. He protects the puck so well for a small guy, he competes. There’s some times when he’s in a one-on-one battle and I want to come support him and he’s always yelling at me: ‘Don’t come in there, just get open.’ Because you know he’s going to win his battles. He’s doing an incredible job this year.â€

I call huge BS every time someone says he doesn't compete or back check. He's actually very responsible defensively, though not always effective due to his size.
