If Stepan was as good all the time as he is when he's "on", he'd be a first line center. That's what separates the elite from the good.

Act as self-righteous as you want. There are many who agree with me. Neither changes the fact that Stepan has played piss poor for the past 40 or so games spanning back to last year. Keep hugging on to his you know whats

There are many people who agree that Lundqvist is overrated or that Callahan is a 3rd line grinder. That doesn't mean they're correct.

You keep talking about hugging things, and I'll keep pretending like I take you seriously because you say things like that.

Absolutely, positively, no way.

1st line centers:

Brad Richards
Steven Stamkos
Sidney Crosby
Ryan Getzlaf
John Tavares

etc

Stepan isn't even close to that mold when he's on his best. When he's going and going good he is an average to above average 2C

There may be a terminology issue here. When you say "first line center", do you distinguish between average first line centers and those who are elite? The guys you listed are elite, and there are only a handful of them in the entire league. If that is your definition of a first line center, then most of the teams in the league don't even have ONE first line center.

Stepan, based on his production and his increased focus on his defense, is clearly an average to good second line center. When he's at his best, he plays like a serviceable to average first line center. Anybody can see that.

Frankly, he should have even more points than he currently has. He's set up a couple of CHOICE scoring chances for guys who proceeded to choke (One example off the top of my head--I don't remember which game it was, but in one of the early games, he made a perfect pass through the crease to Gaborik who botched it on the empty net).

Incidentally, I love how so many people are so ready to bail on Stepan because Miller had himself a nice first game. "New toy syndrome" at its finest:

What??????? Stepan on his best days on the ice is barely a borderline 2nd line center!
His game has more holes than swiss cheese.

Stepan's only TRUE flaw is his skating. If he can improve that, his entire game will improve.

But wait, I forgot. This is HF. Evgeni Malkin is the standard to which all 2nd line centers are compared.

So 50 points isn't enough to be a 2nd line center? What does he have to do, win the Richard and find a cure for cancer?

Once Miller gets experience, he'll be a better all around player than Stepan is because he's bigger, a better skater and more physically engaged than Stepan will ever be.

i dont care about the past. I like stepan but he has been awful this year. its time for him to step it up.

Nope; 1 goal in 25 playoff games isn't nearly enough to be a 2nd line center pal!!!! Stop drinking the Stepan coolade!

He's 22 ****ing years old. Datsyuk was **** in the playoffs at the start of his career and look at him now. I'm not comparing Step to Dats, but a lot can change as a player gets older. He's still developing his game.

And it's Kool-Aid. Spell it correctly.

I don't see it chief! A player who can't skate, is softer than a tub of butter, can't win faceoffs and can't score goals when it matters doesn't have much upside in my book!

I believe you're the first person I've ever talked to that has less patience than Torts. I'm honored by this experience.

Mark Messier was bigger, faster, more physically engaged and had a better shot than the great one.

Stepan is much more talented offensively and a much smarter player. I say there is a very small chance of Miller surpassing Stepan at any point in their careers.

You'll always get that. Remember Prince Chad thread.

Miller's future is on the wing IMO.

his entire offseason should just be devoted to skating. if he was just slightly above-average at skating he would be a much more effective player.

not calling him ineffective, but him being slow does hurt his game.

He's been something like 49.5% on faceoffs this year, same as Richards. And when Richards started his career, he couldn't win a faceoff. Neither could Crosby.
