I don't think either is particularily sane, but there you have it.
Stepan reminds me of a younger Steve Rucchin, or a Paul Stastny. Rucchin of course had the advantage in physicality.
The NY media created and continues to maintain a false narrative that Stefan is a gifted player with potential to be a star. Most of the fans accepted this as fact.
Now thats hes in his 3rd season, some who have watched him, realize that in reality his upside is that of a decent 3rd line player when he gives a full out effort.
If anyone maintains he has been anything but brutal since the playoffs and the start of this season, I question your objectivity. If you agree with this observation, but still think he can be an above average player, then we can agree to disagree
No 3rd liners scored 50 points last year. And a lot of second liners didn't either.
95 forwards had 50+ points. There's 180 top 6 slots. Do the math. Stepan is absolutely a 2nd liner.
Rucchin never struck me as the cerebral playmaking type, but then again I didn't watch much of him in his prime.
Don't bring stats into the argument! They hate those!
Once Stepan hit the NHL he became much less of a playmaker. I see his use as more deflection s and good hands around the net. He is good for a nice pass or two on an odd man rush but he isn't a "true" playmaker at this level IMO until he can find a way to make space for himself with the puck.

Because Adam Oates was known for his skating, shot and aggressiveness?
I started this thread, so that should give you some sort of inclination regarding how I think Stepan needs to play better. But whining about how he cant do the necessary things an NHL player needs to do, and wanting to get rid of him? Thats extreme. Since last March? Oh, you mean the 30 or so games the Rangers have played since then? Too much venom and whining towards a 22 year old player.
Anyway, it seems like we have a lot of experts around here that need to have their eyes checked.
Did I say he was? No, I didn't. To put Adam Oates in the same sentence as Derek Stepan is a disgrace, and you know it.
I'd love for you to find where I said he should be traded. Please don't put words in my mouth. And you can use words like "whining" and "venom" in an attempt to discredit my argument, but it's not going to make my words any less true.
Personally, my allegiance is to the name on the FRONT of the jersey. I really have no desire to coddle a poor "22 year old player" who flat out sucks right now, and has for a while. I have eyes... I see things...as do many other people on here. I'm not saying he can't turn it around, or I want him traded; I'm saying he's been playing like a total pansy. This is NY, if you want to coddle players, that's your business. But as long as these guys make WAY more money than I'll ever make, playing a professional sport, then I reserve the right to spew as much "venom" as I want, in their direction. That's how it works, pal.
But it doesn't matter that Stepan has played like ass the last 40 or some games because he scored 51 points last year!!!! POINTZZZ!!
You strongly implied it. If you can't acknowledge that you have no business conversing with adults.Did I say he was? No, I didn't.

You said: "Are you kidding me? Please don't insult everyone here by comparing Derek Stepan to Adam Oates."
Next sentence, in support of your view: "Stepan can't skate, shoot, and is ridiculously timid."
But yeah, you didn't say nothing like that.

Stepan doesn't have the skillset of an elite #2 center, so that makes him a #3 center on a good team.![]()
Fixed.
Nope. Still just as ridiculous as the first time you said it. Try again tomorrow.
25.58%act as self-righteous as you want. There are many who agree with me.
