Derek Stepan

I don't think either is particularily sane, but there you have it.

Stepan reminds me of a younger Steve Rucchin, or a Paul Stastny. Rucchin of course had the advantage in physicality.

Rucchin never struck me as the cerebral playmaking type, but then again I didn't watch much of him in his prime.

The NY media created and continues to maintain a false narrative that Stefan is a gifted player with potential to be a star. Most of the fans accepted this as fact.
Now thats hes in his 3rd season, some who have watched him, realize that in reality his upside is that of a decent 3rd line player when he gives a full out effort.

If anyone maintains he has been anything but brutal since the playoffs and the start of this season, I question your objectivity. If you agree with this observation, but still think he can be an above average player, then we can agree to disagree

No 3rd liners scored 50 points last year. And a lot of second liners didn't either.

95 forwards had 50+ points. There's 180 top 6 slots. Do the math. Stepan is absolutely a 2nd liner.

Stepan not a 2C?

I think we can all just agree that whipping boys are created because of agendas and biases. Whether its Boyle or Gaborik or Stepan, no matter what they do, nobody cares. They just dont like them for whatever reason.

Once Stepan hit the NHL he became much less of a playmaker. I see his use as more deflection s and good hands around the net. He is good for a nice pass or two on an odd man rush but he isn't a "true" playmaker at this level IMO until he can find a way to make space for himself with the puck.

If Stepan were raking in the dough, he could be a whipping boy. Fact is he's a third year player, 22 year old, still developing.

He will be fine.

Don't bring stats into the argument! They hate those!

I know you're backing me, but i'm not even someone who's obsessed with stats as i think they can be misleading. But when Stepan was in the top 100 in scoring last season for forwards and there are 180 top 6 spots (not that everyone in those spots is deserving) I just think it makes it so clear he is, by far, a second line player, at the ripe old age of 22. He is still going to get better and probably, with his style of play, won't peak for another 5 seasons or so.

Stepan's taking undue heat because the Rangers lost too much supporting talent (particularly at C) in the off season.

Plus, personally I think he'll be at his best as a playmaking RW.

If the Rangers can make the next 2 moves they need to make to get to Cup contention, Stepan will be fine. But, if they can't get another decent 2-way center or at least forward, he'll continue to have a tough time.

Oh I agree that Stepan really hasn't shown it yet at this level, but I think the potential is absolutely there. It's just very questionable whether it'll show up at this point. It seems like the game hasn't slowed down enough for him yet (cue mandatory quip about his lack of speed).

Because Adam Oates was known for his skating, shot and aggressiveness?

Did I say he was? No, I didn't. To put Adam Oates in the same sentence as Derek Stepan is a disgrace, and you know it.

I started this thread, so that should give you some sort of inclination regarding how I think Stepan needs to play better. But whining about how he cant do the necessary things an NHL player needs to do, and wanting to get rid of him? Thats extreme. Since last March? Oh, you mean the 30 or so games the Rangers have played since then? Too much venom and whining towards a 22 year old player.

Anyway, it seems like we have a lot of experts around here that need to have their eyes checked.

I'd love for you to find where I said he should be traded. Please don't put words in my mouth. And you can use words like "whining" and "venom" in an attempt to discredit my argument, but it's not going to make my words any less true.

Personally, my allegiance is to the name on the FRONT of the jersey. I really have no desire to coddle a poor "22 year old player" who flat out sucks right now, and has for a while. I have eyes... I see things...as do many other people on here. I'm not saying he can't turn it around, or I want him traded; I'm saying he's been playing like a total pansy. This is NY, if you want to coddle players, that's your business. But as long as these guys make WAY more money than I'll ever make, playing a professional sport, then I reserve the right to spew as much "venom" as I want, in their direction. That's how it works, pal.

But it doesn't matter that Stepan has played like ass the last 40 or some games because he scored 51 points last year!!!! POINTZZZ!!

People love quoting stats....

Where were those same people quoting Gomez and Drury's stats from their prime years?

Yeah, exactly...

This is New York... what have you done for me lately?

"Oh, but he's 22!!!!" Yeah that's nice, he's a 22 year old that is obviously REGRESSING....and goes into a freakin' shell half the time.

You strongly implied it. If you can't acknowledge that you have no business conversing with adults.

You said: "Are you kidding me? Please don't insult everyone here by comparing Derek Stepan to Adam Oates."

Next sentence, in support of your view: "Stepan can't skate, shoot, and is ridiculously timid."

But yeah, you didn't say nothing like that.

Ok, how's this:

Stepan is to Oates what Hellen Keller is to an Eagle.

Yea, in all honesty, I dont think you know what you want from Derek Stepan. Hes certainly not playing well, and he needs to play better.

But the incessant bashing regarding his overall skills? It makes you look a bit loony.

This is the problem with the average hockey fan. If he skates fast or looks good skating he is a good hockey player or at least looks good out there. derek on the other hand is the complete opposite akward skater who looks very slow. watch some of his highlights and the reality is he's not that slow. now i will never call him fast but he isn't slow he actually pulls away from players at times slow players don't do that in the nhl. hagelin on the other hand flys around out there legs moving a mile a minute so he gets zero criticism because it looks like he's doing something but in reality steps make 5 times the amount of smart good easy hockey plays and is twice the player that hagelin is. steps has 5 points in 9 games. he plays on the 2nd pp unit which get 35 to 40 seconds of each power play. he's 22 yrs old making 800,000usd and plays with pyatt and hagelin. and he is your scapegoat. richards 8points gaby 8 points and nash 8 points all playing together on the same line make 7.5 million each apparently have really outplayed him and deserve a free pass around here. there is a reason he is off limits when it comes to being a tradable asset on this team by people who actually understand that speed doesn't make the player. he's on pace for a 50 point season again and he also kills penalties and plays in the last minute of games for a coach who will bench anybody at anytime.
to the adam oates comment I don't think he will ever put up some of the numbers oates did
oates 23 yrs old 20 points
24 yrs old 47 points
25 yrs old 54 points
as a comparable not that big of a stretch so lay off the guy who made the comparison.
find another goat.....maybe it should start with
lunquist, gabi, rich and nash about 30 million in salary and none have been good enough on a nightly basis.

Nope. Still just as ridiculous as the first time you said it. Try again tomorrow.

Act as self-righteous as you want. There are many who agree with me. Neither changes the fact that Stepan has played piss poor for the past 40 or so games spanning back to last year. Keep hugging on to his you know whats
