ESPN Insider Article but I'll post the Stepan comment. He finished 6th in the league in GVT amongst skaters.

Believe Stepan will be looking at Matt Duchene money now in a 2 year bridge deal, maybe slightly lower. Cap hit of 3,5 M.
Somewhat similar stats. Higher pedigree for Duchene. Both centers of similar size.
Duchene was a 3rd overall pick in 2009 that scored 150 points in his first 219 games in the NHL when he got his new bridge contract after his ELC at 21 years of age.
Stepan was a 2nd round pick (51st overall in 2008) that has scored 136 points (excl. playoffs) in his first 210 games during his ELC
Stepan will be 23 this year when he signs the bridge deal. 2 years older than Duchêne. This will have an impact when old Stogie sits down to parley.

The serious contenders: Patrice Bergeron, Datsyuk, Marian Hossa, Toews.

Also considered: David Backes, Andrew Cogliano, Boyd Gordon, Jay McClement, Derek Stepan.

My personal belief is you should be a very good offensive player in addition to a defensive stalwart. In hockey, possession of the puck is the best defence, and, if you're one of those guys who can't do anything with it, are you really helping your team?

When the Rangers were talking to Colorado about O'Reilly, Sherman asked for Derek Stepan. New York said no. Now we all know why. Stepan took a major leap this year.

Does anyone know where I can find stats on how many goals were given up with a player on the ice? I'm mostly interested in even strength, but PP would be interesting too (just less significant IMO). The article mentioned a site but they had a lot of stats and I got lost.

If you go onto nhl.com to the player stats, you choose the plus/minues category and you can see how many total goals against and for a player was on.

Stepan was on the ice for 35 goals against, not sure if that includes PP or not, because the PP is listed separately too. Datsyuk was on the ice for 30 or 31. Bergeron only 17.

It does, which means Stepan was only on for 24 even strength goals against.

Edit: As the "20" would indicate it's per 20 minutes. Is Stepan really higher than Hossa in that category?

we can confirm it with NHL.com stats
Stepan 49 ES on ice goals for, 767:28 ES TOI
Hossa 33 ES on ice goals for 560:20 ES TOI

Stepan is better.

Duh I forgot Backstrom and Ribiero put the team on their backs and are top 5 centers in the league. How silly of me
 
Stepan's GF% (GF/GF+GA) is #1 in the freaking league. Richards' despite being terrible most of the season was #68. The Caps' #1 center who apparently is close to Malkin is #88 on this list. And the Caps' #2 center who would apparently be on the depth chart over Stepan is #201.

Well it depends on the chosen sample, if you include players who have played 200+ minutes of ES TOI he's only 2nd. #1? Mats Zuccarello.

I like their HART rating more though. It's an average of their HARO and HARD ratings which are basically how much more/less did the team score vs. expectation, and how much less/more did they concede vs. expectation when the player was on the ice.

It's sort of a +/- adjusted for quality of teammates and opposition.

Stepan is "only" 4th in that, behind Crosby, Toews, and freakin Rozsival!

Again, if we allow players with 200 mins, Zuccarello is just wiping the floor with the competition with a HART of 82.8%. Crosby's is 65.1.
