Derek Stepan retires from playing

I remember the debates on HF about paying him on his big contract. The board was split about paying him. I don't remember which side I was on. Eventually the Rangers paid him.

We had Brassard. We also had Miller and Hayes who were recent roster additions. I think a lot of fans were against a big contract because they haven't always been good to us, and we had some center depth. There was a fear his skating was only going to get worse with him falling off a cliff. We also only had 1 player over 25 goals so there was a bit of a concern on upgrading a wing position. And if we're being honest, I think many fans saw the window closing. Although to be fair even with our window, we only finished top 3 in the east, twice. We had some good playoff runs when we finished outside the top 10 in the league. I think everybody sensed he was being traded before the clause kicked in.

Hard not to respect a guy who maximized his impact the way that Step did. And still managed to have a couple beer every night.

He's always gotten recognition in the player polls for being a guy who would likely be a great coach; wouldn't mind if we someday coaxed him back into the fold. I suspect he's going to prove to be a strong hockey mind off the ice too.

Shame he's going to the Wild. Would have loved to bring him back in some capacity. Smart player that would make a great scout or coach.

I don't get to see many NYR games live. Life just got too busy living upstate. But I was there for this one, and it was the most electric I have ever seen the Garden in my life. Still gives me chills even thinking about it.

Stepan was one of the good guys for sure. Always a soft spot for him

I don’t think I’ve ever had less fun watching a game as I did this one. I was stressed out to the point where I don’t remember most of it.

This goal is the loudest I’ve ever yelled after a goal has been scored. That I haven’t forgotten and will never forget it.

I was hopeful Stepan would make it back into the Ranger org. Perhaps one day he will.

Loved and hated him to be honest. Great player that would have blown the doors off the league if he was a better skater. But he played hard and that's why he always showed up when it mattered.

Not really hated though. I guess you cant have everything. Haha

We pretty much got all Derek's best years but one. A good two way center who survived on guile. Yeah he was pretty slow but for all that he was sneaky as hell in the offensive zone and almost always pretty sharp defensively. As for slow a player can sometimes make up for it with puck movement.

Stepan is one of the least appreciated players we have ever drafted. Everyone always focused on his skating but it never hampered him that much here, smart player, clutch player and the guy played with a broken jaw, liked Prust until that dirtbag moment exposed him for what he really is. One of the better Rangers we've had over the last 15 years. I wish some of the current guys cared as much as he did.

I'll never forget that caps game 7. I missed the first period due to a prior obligation that I couldn't get out of with no way to follow along and a pit in my stomach that lasted the entire game. My first memory of the game was getting in the car turning on the radio and hearing that Nash got stuffed on a breakaway (what a shock). Got home before the second started and the rest was history. Thanks Derek.

The shortened lockout season (2012-2013) was probably his best season as a Ranger. You can tell he really saw the ice well that year. Probably the best center we had in the 2010s until we got Mika honestly.

He had a great attitude and will always be a beloved Ranger.

Shocked Rangers hasn't post a piece like they did with other former Rangers that retired
