The good thing is that Stepan knows that he can't get a long term deal, so the sides are probably not that far in general terms. Those couple of 100K's should soon be sorted. 3.15 AAV 2 years comin' up!

It would free up $2.775 million. That's if they have no replacements.

Of course, that would then leave you at 11 forwards, but you add Stepan and you're at 12. So, then add an extra (Lindberg at $760)? And then there's cap relief with the LTI for Cally and Hags... maybe. But wait! You've still got 8 defensemen. Johnson saves you $600K. Falk would be $925K...

Confusing, ain't it?

However you slice it, if you project 13 forwards and 7 defensemen - and assuming no benefit from LTI - then the team has about $4.0-4.5MM, depending on who makes the team, to sign Stepan and leave room for in-season maneuverability. Not quite enough to do a longterm deal like McD's, but enough to do a bridge in the low $3MMs.

Cut Powe, Pyatt and Asham. That alone frees up 3.5 million.

NHL players have guaranteed contracts. Can't just cut players like in the NFL.

Powe, Pyatt and Asham have cap hits of 1.067 mil, 1.55 mil and 1 mil, respectively. We can place them in Hartford, but every dollar over 925k for each contract would still count against the cap. And we would need to replace at least 2 of those players in the lineup with kids from Hartford, at least until Cally and Hags are ready to go.

There is money to be saved there, but not that much.

Combine Powe's hands, Pyatt's drive, and Asham's discipline and we may just have the worst player in the league!

If that player has Pyatt's dreamy eyes, it's worth it just from jersey sales alone. *****es be crazy bout them eyes.

moore has a similar pyatt shine.

gotta imagine Kreider-Richards-Nash is playing in the head of Stepan.

I feel like if the Rangers didn't have so much dead weight on the bottom lines taking up much-needed cap space, he'd be signed by now. People on the board saw this tight cap situation coming a mile away all summer.

If Stepan signs for $3M and

  1. Powe is waived
  2. Johnson is sent down
  3. Lindberg makes the team

...we would be cap compliable (barely) without having even having to put anyone on LTIR. After Hagelin and Callahan return to the lineup, some roster movement would be necessary, but the coaching staff gets 10-12 games to analyze what they have to work with.
That would of course be an ideal situation from managements point of view
Got me thinking that the Hedberg invite is probably Plan B in that the extra dollars saved there (assuming Biron could be dealt without NHL salary coming back) could be used to pay Stepan anything above 3 M that would be needed to close this thing. There is a magic number and that is why this drags on...

That's a pretty strange way to assign blame....

Right handed shot. The PP looked much better with Kristo as the right handed shot. Its hard with 5 lefties. The Rangers should sign Stepan and worry about the money later. What are they going to do? Wait until October 1 to sign Stepan when money can be shed? Go through an entire camp without the #1 center because of $250,000. :(

I think Slats got a decent network, but you put yourself in a tough spot if you are forced to make a move, and shed somewhat significant money, on todays market, like at a specific time 20 days ahead.

True dat - but not really applicable here. We would have a 24 man roster, and then thereby sending Asham down would mean 925.000 in more cap space immediately. Or Lindberg. Or Kreider. It is quite easily done at that time.
We would not be "forced" to trade off anyone at this specific time - although Pyatt and Boyle would be in the hotseat if Lindberg and/or another young gun show progress enough to feel they are ready (not likely - maybe Fast).

Newell Brown didn't join AV in NY but the philosophy is still the same. AV was asked about the righty shots on the PP at his press conference at Radio City. He said even having one righty makes a big difference. Arniel runs the PP but AV said the buck stops with me when he was asked about the PP a few days ago. Kristo played the PP last night. Righty shot.

Brown discussed the PP philosophy

“When you're trying to run a power play with five left shots, which we were forced to do a lot this year, you're really swimming upstream. Seventy-seven per cent of the power-play goals are scored with at least two right shots, so that tells you a lot right there. Not to say there are exceptions to the rule, but when you have five left shots, or even four, your chances of scoring are diminished.

“Teams are so fast to get into the shot lanes these days,” Brown continued, “that if you can't take one-timers, if you aren't in position to take one-touch passes and move the puck quickly to shooters and shoot off the pass, you're at a big disadvantage. That was something we were dealing with this year.”

During the 2010-11 campaign, Brown had righties Sami Salo, Mikael Samuelsson and a healthy Ryan Kesler plus heavy-shooting lefty Christian Ehrhoff. Salo, Samuelsson and Ehrhoff were not around this season and Kesler was hurt for most of it.

“You know, it's funny,” Brown said. “When Ryan Kesler was in the lineup, our power play was at 22 per cent. I'm sure if we would have stayed healthy, we would have finished in the top 10. That's what makes these types of seasons a real challenge. So there are lots of things we can look at but the bottom line, and you hear it repeatedly, is it's a results-oriented business. That's why we're in the situation we're in right now.”

Derek Stepan. Where is he?

And you've failed to convince me that your point is actually based on something.

So there we are.

He had a fairly easy to identify point and basis for it what are you having trouble with?

Looking at the above post with all the cap hits listed it makes me again regret the extra 300K we gave Boyle. Feel like Hags could have been another 1 or 2 k lower as well. I don't have a problem with Stepan getting slightly above 3 though so I do hope they get this done because it seems that's what he wants

Last night on TSN’s Insider Trading, Bob McKenzie said that Derek Stepan is not only looking for a contract similar to the bridge deal that Matt Duchene signed, two-years and $3.5 million per season, but that he may be looking for more money per season than that the $3.5 Duchene got.

McKenzie notes that the Rangers seem comfortable giving Stepan $3 million per season, or a number a little higher, but there continues to be “significant distance” in the talks.

Via snyrangerblog. If he aint signed and with this team when they leave for alberta this weekend, its going to get ugly real fast. Im not stressing yet tho.

No reason to stress this.

Don't forget, if we can't sign Stepan we still have Brad Richards...and his $6.66 million cap hit. You can't make this stuff up sometimes.

I wonder if you asked Derek Stepan at the age of say 12... you can make 3 million a year when you are 23.. what do you think?

Do you think he'd say "No, I'd want 3.2!!!!!!"
