Player Discussion: Denton Mateychuk

6'0" 185lbs at 15, Denton lost the genetic lottery in that family in regards to size . His other brothers at 6'5", 230lbs and 6'3, 194lbs.

Most talented by a mile though which is the most important part

Yes, Denton's 5'11 if you round up.

I was watching Moose Jaw the other day and in the play call I heard "Mateychuk passes it up to....", and it gave me a weird deja vu feeling, more like I had gone back in time and was now trapped in some previous year. Apparently it was his 6'5 brother Kasen who signed with Moose Jaw and happened to be playing one of a handful of games.

I was talking to David Clarkson one time at a rink around town and he said he hoped his son gets his brother’s size. I asked how big was brother. He said huge. I looked him up. His brother is huge.

Thats a big boy, probably would have been an even better water bottle protector than David.

Honestly I think Mateychuk was a better 2 way defenseman his rookie season (much more defensively sound)than Werenski was . When you look back , Mateychuks poise defensively is uncanny for a rookie . Zach was certainly better offensively … as Mateychuks confidence settled in , you started to see his offensive game appearing .. I think we have Damn good one in Mateychuk

Safe is death. Torts probably had visions of current Werenski and preached the rover style for him so its not exactly a 1 to 1 comparison

there’s actually a pretty huge impact from “what is your coach telling you to do” on the perception + advanced stats for a lot of players.

no coach is saying “be bad defensively” but torts told werenski to play as a rover, so he did. lots of coaches are fine with their skill guys cheating a bit for offense.

Denton skated in 45 games with the Jackets, scoring 4 goals, 13 points, and owning a +4 rating. With him in the lineup, this was a completely different team. They had a record of 26-16-3 (.577%) with #5 in the lineup. Without him, the Jackets were 14-17-6 (.378%).

Long ago poster with the @ ?

I’m gonna need a HARD DATE on when Mateychuk was looked at as better than Jiricek.

Please and thank you in advance. It’s just never really been talked about since the perception/reality FLIP.

Hockey Gods are paying us back for Ryan Murray. As I’ve said from the beginning, Mateychuk is the REAL DEAL. No other description needed.

Great question. The switch started before last summer.

There was a game where Jiricek was absolutely faked out of his jock. Might have been against New Jersey. That is when I began to have doubts. He wasn’t faked by a good move by a good player. He was faked on a basic move by a mediocre guy. Then Mateychuk was winning award after award in the WHL playoffs. I still had Jiricek ahead last summer, but it was much closer then the previous year. And I give bonus points for handedness of defensemen. By the time he was traded, I was fine with trading Jiricek and had Mateychuk well ahead of him.
