I am not in any position to personally judge him about the vaccination, but I've often wondered if there's been tension and a rift with him in the organization because of it.

And if there isn't, it sounds like there may have been over his heel injury.

Which makes me believe that if there's any chance of him ever being a good NHL goalie, it probably won't happen here. It feels a little too damaged here.

His ovation on opening night when players were introduced pregame wasn't exactly a warm one. It wasn't as cold as Ruff's ovation, but it was flat and unenthusiastic as best and a couple of boos at worst. I think the only player that got a colder reception was McLeod and even that is probably for non-hockey reasons. And then the Bronx cheers the other night.

It could get ugly here for him soon.

That said, Marty was Bronx cheered at a game in 2005 where he got lit up for like 4 goals on 8 or 9 shots in a period. It didn't soil him with the fans, although that was right after the lockout ended and the team got off to a poor start and fans weren't really used to seeing in probably 12 or maybe even 15 years at that point.

he also lied to the team about it and sent them into a scramble when it was more or less required to be a functional NHL player
It was a stupid rule when implemented by the NHL and Blackwood has at least been somewhat vindicated considering it has since been dropped as we know that it does nothing to prevent transmission. Bertuzzi was still able to play, though just not in Canada - which is something the Devils could've just worked around. Would not have been ideal, but I'm not sure why elite athletes were being forced into getting the vaccine in the first place. Regardless, I wouldn't label him an asshole over that decision when we haven't heard rumblings of any friction with him and teammates before or after that. I don't recall him lying to the team other than saying he was going to get it and then getting cold feet, but maybe I'm not remembering all the details.

Not sure where NJ goes with its goaltending situation. Blackwood has the highest ceiling of the 3 goalies, but probably the lowest floor as well. Hoping he has a good season and is able to find consistency, but it's hard to be optimistic. I'm just not a fan of trading major assets for a goalie as they are unpredictable. The only goalies I would trust enough to trade major assets for are not being traded.

I'd prefer quality, not quantity. Mercer and Blackwood for Demko would do it for me.
We, in our turn, will prefer to accompany you to stay away with nothing but love with yourself. Beloved traditional Vancouver practice, popularized, but not finding sufficient response in the hearts outside of Colombie-Britannique.

Demko's hip surgeries were back in 2016 when he was 20 years old.

It doesn't seem like it's ever really caused any complications. I was actually a big Demko fan after his draft. Looked like he might be the next Cory Schneider. He was a Boston College guy and had a similar collegiate career.

It took him a bit to break through into the NHL and his start in the league was a bit rocky. It looked like Markstrom would be their goalie for a while and Demko would either be the backup or out of the organization, but they passed on signing Markstrom when he went to UFA.

I do think Blackwood came off as a bit of an asshole in his fairly recent interview, might have been right before the start of the season. Where he said he hears ''Shit'', which was the inspiration for the ''I'm Shit'' avatar I had. It makes it a little bit easier to hate this player, as if his pathetic goaltending isn't enough.

If he wants to shut everybody's shit up than maybe he needs to prove he can go out there and actually play and chip away at that ugly .891% over his last 60 games. That's embarrassing. f***in Jon Gillies probably wouldn't do that much worse if he had played 60 NHL games in the last two years. He barely did any worse playing 20 games in the NHL. And he's not anywhere near NHL caliber.

Because if this is all he's got, he's gonna be hearing a lot more SHIT when he goes out there, especially at home games, like those Bronx cheers that were hurled at him the other night.

Tell that to the many fans out there who don't give a s--t about facts (there are plenty of those running around).

That is such a gray area, it really shouldn't be but it is.

Anyway, if Mac played well during that time, no fan would give a rat's ass.....

Looking like I’m very much so in the minority here but I think we are giving up way too much and Demko is being overrated in the OPs original offer let alone the adjusted one. I know many of you are completely done with Blackwood but Demko has had his own struggles as well. I’m not against moving prospects that are a position of strength for us (Muk) but no way do I give up just a top 5 protected 1st for Demko when our team hasn’t proved our 1st will be out of the lottery realm.

Mercer is a non starter for me in this trade as well. I’ll keep the 20 year old Newfoundland in my top 9 thank you. Kids going to be a playoff performer.

100% correct. This happens all the time. When the Devils have a need, posters are willing to overpay for players to fill the need. For example, in the offseason some posters said they would trade pick 2 plus Holtz for DeBrincat. He went for less than the value of pick 2.

Forget this kind of overpay for Demko.
Mukhamadullin and Blackwood for him and that's about as high as I'd go.
No chance I'd send a 1st in this draft even with lottery protection.

I am sure the Canucks are drooling over that offer

I wouldn't expect them to accept it, but I also wouldn't pay a massive price for a goalie.
Goalies just don't bring the kind of value everyone here thinks they do, if Vancouver trades Demko they aren't getting anywhere near the package in the OP.

You may be underrated Blackwood's potential contribution to Vancouver, as he's a fantastic asset for them.

He could really lead the charge hard for Bedard.

If he doesn't get injured....

Good night for Demko. He was .889 last night. Got his season average up to .874. His value is heading up
The first two goals were softy of the night caliber. The first goal was my softy of the night.

The second goal was one of the lousiest breakaway goals I've ever seen. I couldn't give him a softy of the night on it, only because it was a partial breakaway. But it was a leaky one that I think went through him or even off his glove. The loose puck then slowly trickles past the goal line, as he's in the butterfly. It was ugly.

I still think he's an upgrade to Blackwood (I don't think anyone not named Korpisalo, Montembeault or maybe Martin Jones wouldn't be, as far as full time NHL goalies go) though, but he's having a poor start for sure.

With the Demko of the last couple years, Vancouver is probably at least NHL .500 right now and no worse.

top end young goalies certainly have value.

The problem is we've been so used to average (at VERY best) goaltending the past 4-5 years, that people don't think its a big deal. It is.

He's 26 and above average, his numbers aren't much better than Blackwood's
don't get me wrong, he's clearly better, but what he isn't is a goalie you deal multiple high end assets for.
I think goaltending has been a massive problem, and he could help but that isn't guaranteed. To me he isn't in that upper echelon of game changing goalies, he's in the high side of the middle of the pack

past ~65 games....

Blackwood .896 SV%, 3.15 GAA
Demko .911 SV%, 2.86 GAA

Demko is one of the better young goalies in the league. And yes I would trade assets for him.

Blackwood has sucked aside from like a 2 month stretch 4 years ago.

Hey Devils fans, if the Canucks were to blow it up and trade Demko, what would this be of consideration for y'all?

To NJ:
Thatcher Demko

To VAN:
Mackenzie Blackwood
Andreas Johanssen
Shakir Mukhamadullin
2023 1st round pick (top 5 protected. Becomes unprotected 2024)
2024 2nd (becomes 2023 if the first becomes 2024)

Used the Schneider trade from yesteryears as a template. Demko is more proven, signed to a great contract so the cost is a little higher.

EDIT: Seems like I undervalued Demko. Added johanssen for cap purposes + a 2nd to offset value. Also added the trade condition to the 1st
Only if Vancouver takes the Hugheses.

Those first 5 games of the 2020-2021 season did wonders to boost that, since it's .891% his last 60 games. Even Martin Jones hasn't been that bad since that date.

It was not quite 3 years ago, but it will be 3 years in February-March. He's had 5 game streaks of good play since then, like the first 5 games he played of 2020-2021 and maybe once last year and a 3 game hot streak this year, but he's done much more bad than good.

I don't think he sucked outside of the 2 month stretch almost 3 years ago. He was solid his first year in the league (used very sparingly), but the thing that I think gets him the benefit of the doubt, outside of probably the fact that he's a homegrown 2nd round pick, is that 2 month stretch (January-March of 2020) where he really played great, but that's just a 2 month stretch.

He wasn't bad the first two seasons in the NHL, but he wasn't great. He still has a minus in GSAx those first two years, but just by barely. Not like these last 2 years and the start to this one.

And..... the elephant in the room that his AHL career was pretty weak. An average year when he first turned pro in 16-17 (his best year by far), and then a horrific year in 17-18, followed up by a very mediocre/below average year in 18-19 in limited games.

I'm not giving up premium assets for a goalie, this system stinks for any goalie who's in it. If you think Demko can be the Buffalo version of Ryan Miller when Ruff had him for a decade there, then go ahead, but I don't think people realize how good Ryan Miller was back then. Dude was the one of the only goalies who would give Marty some of his best runs for his Vezina years before Hank. If you want to give premium assets for someone, go for Meier.
