Hey Devils fans, if the Canucks were to blow it up and trade Demko, what would this be of consideration for y'all?

To NJ:
Thatcher Demko

To VAN:
Mackenzie Blackwood
Shakir Mukhamadullin
2023 1st round pick

Used the Schneider trade from yesteryears as a template. Demko is more proven, signed to a great contract so the cost is a little higher.
Done - but I don't see Vancouver doing that.

Demko hasnt been at his best so far save last night, but to be fair he would be better on any team not named Vancouver. We give up multiple 2 or 3 on 1s a game. We constantly allow cross ice passes leading to easy one timers on the PP, we give up at least 1-2 shorthanded breakaways a game. If the game goes to OT, expect at least 1 2 on 0 or a 3 on 0 chance as well. Idk how a team manages to give up multiple 3-0s every year in OT let alone even a single one.

so....just like the devils. got it. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Protect that pick to say top 5 and I'll drive Blackwood to Vancouver myself.

Updated OP with a little higher of a price and added cap back to Van

I don’t see if happening with the new proposal. I don’t think it costs a second to get rid of Johansson.

Reality is that I’m not sure the original deal would happen. You’ll find many takers here (including me) on the original proposal, but it’s because the fan base is getting desperate on goaltending. I really don’t know if management is in the same spot.

Well my basis of it is if it’s as an easy of a yes then there’s probably a little more value to add. From there also using how dumping 1.3M in cap space for 2 years cost the Canucks a 2nd

Johnsson is only signed for this year, and the Devils have already paid his signing bonus. So, he’s extremely cheap in cash cost. Devils would find a different solution to the cap issue.

But, really, the bigger issue is that you’re just getting an emotional reaction from the fans after a bad game from Blackwood. Very few of us have really watched Demko, but almost all of us want to shoot Blackwood into the sun.

I'd do that

I get what everyone's saying about top-5-protecting the pick, but if the Devils make that trade and still finish bottom-5 in the league, it's not gonna matter cuz everyone's getting fired and we'll all be picking a new favorite team

Blackwood 25 years old
Demko 26 years old

Career save %'s

Demko .911

Blackwood .907

2022-23 save %

Demko .872

Blackwood .871

I know Demko had been significantly better in the 2 previous seasons, but we also know Blackwood was banged up those years, and we've seen guys have 2 good years before falling off......like Blackwood for instance.

Just seems like in this proposal we are adding a ton for what may only be a marginal improvement.

Yes, and?

Blackwood was good for like 2 months and otherwise has been a below average NHL goalie. Bit difference.

Career save% .911 vs .907,

Is that really a big difference?

There is really context needed here.

Ummmm, there is a big difference when one guy is only a .907% because he was a .916% 3-4 years ago. That HEAVILY inflates those numbers. That's basically like saying ''Well, Brodeur is a career .912%'' to rationalize his .901% play in 13-14.

Or and I know a few people are gonna love this one. This is like saying ''Cory Schneider is a career .918% in the NHL. That's one of the highest save percentages of all time. I don't know why he can't an NHL job anymore''.

Blackwood hasn't played CLOSE to .907% in a couple of years. In fact, before the last two seasons (and what he's played during this one so far) Blackwood was a career .916%. The last two seasons have PLUMMETED him to a career .907%. He hasn't come close to being a .907% in a long time. Unless you really wanna grasp and say ''Well, he was a .904% just before the Washington blowout the other night''.

I don't have the splits for Demko's last 60 games, but just yesterday I looked up goalie stats from the date of February 20th of 2021 up to real time, with a minimum of 10 games played in the NHL and Korpisalo is the only goalie that's still in the NHL (though he hasn't played this year due to hip injury) worse than Blackwood since that date. The rest of the list was comprised of guys that are either now retired, in the AHL, were just AHL call ups and were only even due to taxi squad or covid protocols, guys who are passed around on the waiver wire multiple times a year (Jonas Johansson) and Korpisalo.

And the only guys to play more than 25 games on that list were Korpisalo (43 games played) and Blackwood at 60 games played. Jonas Johansson was at exactly 25 games played (with 3 different teams, as he's been a waiver wire pass around) and good ole Jon Gillies at 20 games, although only 19 were for us.

What's so significant about this February 20th, 2021 date? That's the day of Blackwood's 6th game of the 2020-2021 season after his .940% first 5 games or whatever it was. The 60 games since he's .891%. And it's gotten even worse with his start this year. It was actually .893% over his last 55 games heading into this season.
CALLING @Bleedred

Mac has been below .900 for a long long time. LIke, 60+ games I think I saw Bleed say somewhere.
Yup. 60 games.

And if you wanna include Blackwood's HOT start to 20-21, he's still an .896% since the start of 2020-2021.

Blackwood hasn't had more than a good 5 game string of play since February/March of 2020. Before the first ever covid pause. That was the last time. Over a quarter of a decade ago. 31-32 months ago now.

To say that one guy is barely the below the other in career save percentage is lacking A LOT of context. One guy is clearly and consistently trending downward since February of 2021.

Speaking of context, see covid/injuries regarding Blackwood's last 2 seasons.
