I look at the forward corps for next year and I feel pretty good. A couple of guys on the wings need to go but we got a lot of guys coming up like TT.

So the only two guys for sure to be on our D corps next year are Doughty and probably Voynov, our top two PMDs.

For the third pairing who do you want as PMD?
I want Martinez. Not sure why Sutter doesn't have him playing...is he hurt or did he piss Sutter off?
Muzzin I want him in the AHL if his contract allows.

For the Stay At Homes, I rank the guys we got as this:
Mitchell (assuming he comes back, and I believe this)
Greene (he's the second most valuable...still play him 3rd pairing plus PK and our goal faceoffs)
Scuderi
Regher
Ellerby

Basically if Mitchell is back, I think unless Regher is willing to sign for a mil or less, we lose him.

Ellerby should be in AHL with Muzzin, if his contract allows. These guys are not Kings' caliber NHL defensemen. Can they be sent down?

Also a question for someone who can answer...last year we carried 12 forwards, 2g and 7d. This year it seems we can carry either 6d and 12f or 11f and 7d...why is that? Or am I mistaken?

There are valid concerns over whether Mitchell will ever play again.

Regher is making $4 mil a year, I don't think he would take a 75% pay cut

DL is going to have to choose between Martinez and Muzzin, I think Ellerby becomes the new Drewiske

i haven't been impressed with Regher at all. he has been 'an adequate' replacement, but he isn't Greene or Mitchell. slow foot speed (makes Greene look quick) and slow decisions especially in the defensive zone with the puck. he hasn't played as physical and punishing as i had expected

Martinez is probably getting traded. Muzzin is Sutter's choice for the bottom pairing. Martinez is too good to be a 7th defenseman. Ellerby will be the 7th defenseman next season.

Dean needs to replace or re-sign Scuderi and Regehr. I would prefer to see Scuderi re-signed over Regehr, but I think Scuderi will get more on the open market than what the Kings can afford.

I think next season will be a tough one for the Kings on defense, but Quick helps stop many mistakes from ending up in the net. Dean will have to patch something together for next season and hope that the cap rises quickly starting in 2014 to sign a couple of SAH defensemen.

My thoughts:

UFA-Doughty
UFA/Mitchell-Voynov
Muzzin-Greene
Ellerby

Maybe Martinez and/or Bernier get moved for a SAH defenseman.

This is the way I see it:

100% on the team next year:
Doughty, Voynov, Green

Leaves 4 spots:

Pick one:
Mitchel or Regher
If Mitchel is healthy to play, Willie gets the spot if not we need to sign RR and put Willie on LTIR

Pick one:
Muzzin or Martinez
One will get traded, maybe with Bernier for a backup/picks and top 6 LW

Scuderi:
Tough call, he needs to take a paycut to stay, we can't fit him at 3.4 million.
I think he stays.

Ellerby:
Gets qualified and stays as our 7th D, he will have to fight for a spot with some of our younger guys comming up.

I also can see DL looking for a cheap veteran D for depth.

I like Regehr, but I think he's the odd man out provided MItchell is healthy (fingers crossed). We have a monopoly on all the SAH defensemen and one of those guys is gonna get paiiiiiiid

Scuderi is not replaceable yet imo, but I'm most worried about losing him

The D corp will be different going forward next season. The UFA market looks thin except for Scuds. I doubt a team would trade a viable dman in a package for JB, thinking a team dealing for a goalie would want to keep their better defenders. Not sure which of the kids is ready to step up and be an upgrade over who's skating now. It'll be a more active offseason for DL and co for sure this summer.

There is no doubt next year we will have a much better line up.

He is definitely not fast but I noticed his decision-making also is behind a step so he always looks 1 or 2 steps behind on even routine plays.

Its because he is an abomination at 5 on 5 hockey. He's worse than Drewiskie, but he plays because he is old and 'tough to play against'

He would probably be decent on a 3rd pairing who played mainly pk, and got soft minutes 5 on 5, but we have Greene for that

It was an idea. I didn't say it was a good idea.

I think Lombardi is going to have to make a judgment call on whether Mitchell will play next season. If so, Scuderi will not be re-signed.

Regehr-Doughty
Mitchell/Scuderi-Voynov
Greene-Martinez/Muzzin

Bye-bye to Ellerby.

Looking forward, is there anyone in Manchester ready to take on the stay-at-home defenseman role?

I think Regehr leaves, he isn't what the Kings want in their D. He's physical yes but slow and horrible break out passes.

I think Scuds will be re-signed and I think he is too valuable not too. He's looked better since we got Regehr and he doesn't have to play the full 2 mins on the PK.

Biggest decision will be between Muzzin or Martinez. Marty is smoother in his own zone but Muzzin is a lot better in the offensive zone. It seems like Muzzin's shot always has a chance to score. It's a hard decision that I'm glad I don't have to make.

So would you want to run with for next season:

Muzzin-Doughty
UFA/Mitchell-Voynov
Martinez-Greene
Ellerby

Not too bad for a season until the cap rises again.

Looks solid to me. Especially with the kids getting more experience and a full camp.

I prefer RR to Scuderi. Scuderi has lost a step and a half and it's causing him to make esculated decisions. The pace has upped his turnovers by almost 1/3 this season. RR is slow but has a strong sense of angles. He's used to his reduced step and makes the right decisions with the puck because of it.

Neither Muzzin or Ellerby are waver exempt so sending them to the AHL is not an option. They both would end up being sign and trades or trading the rights.
The thing I have said many times that is scary is where is Mitchell in his recovery? Do the Kings have info that is not being made public? Because the choice on what to do needs to be made in either just at a month or a little over. We have draft day to be able to move some of the RFA's and then 6 days later we have free agency where choices have to be made with Scuds and Regehr.
I am sure that Mitchell will end up on LTIR if he can't play otherwise we take the cap hit. But not knowing could leave us with a giant hole to fill much later.
The cap going down and the uncertainty of Mitchell is a very bad combo that can bite us in the ass.

A key question has to be "What is Muzzin's upside?" or at least what does Lombardi think it is. Is he young enough (23? too lazy to look it up) that we can expect him to improve substantially and play a role beyond bottom pairing guy who is useful on the power play? To his credit, he has gotten better as the playoffs have progressed.
