A key question has to be "What is Muzzin's upside?" or at least what does Lombardi think it is. Is he young enough (23? too lazy to look it up) that we can expect him to improve substantially and play a role beyond bottom pairing guy who is useful on the power play? To his credit, he has gotten better as the playoffs have progressed.

Muzzin has the hardest point shot in the organization. When he used it in the regular season on the PP, it won games for us. He also has size and mobility. But he can't do basic things like pinch, return to his own zone, make passes in his own zone or cut off pucks flung along walls in the offensive zone.

So if he's not using that shot, he's worthless.

People can hate on Regehr all they want...but it is an absolute fact that Doughty is a better player with him as his partner.

Doughty needs that kind of guy to get the full potential of his game.

You can make Doughty that shutdown defensive guy similar to Greene, Mitchell, Regehr, or Scuds, but when you do that you take away other parts of his game. People were ******** on Doughty early in the season because he was paired with Muzzin or Ellerby. Doughty had to be the anchor and the responsible player.

Doughty absolutely took off 100% AFTER Regehr was picked up.

Doughty will always make his partner look good, and he excels when he has the veteran, strictly defensive dman back there with him. He not only excels in the offensive end...but he is the primary on-the-puck defender when he has Scuds or Regehr with him. It allows those big guys to just play defense and block shots, and that is what guys like Regehr, Scuderi, or Hal Gill like to do.

We have the potential not to have Scuderi, Regehr, or Mitchell next season and that is a HUGE problem with the make-up of our team.

Ellerby is best suited in a 7 role and I don't think is an everyday option.

So Mitchell will need a miracle, and one of Scuds or Regehr has to come back. We need 2 stay-at-home guys outside of Greene to make this team work. Otherwise, the talent of Doughty and Voynov is just wasted as they will have to take over the role of strictly playing defense. Who wants that? Douughty and Voynov need the ability to roam and if we can't get back our veterans, we will have to find them elsewhere. Luckily, these kind of guys can be had, for a price.

Campbell is a possibility down the road and I think Forbort is pretty much tailor-made as a shutdown guy for this team. Still 2-3 years away though

Well theres 3 for sure defense in drew salva and greene, I think we need two of the mitchell suderi regher My money is on mitchell hitting the ltir but if hes healthy and it comes down to to suderi or regher i say resign suderi . I honestly think his loss of a step is more of the fact he played a ton of mins in alot shorter time then a normal season. Getting a day or two more rest between games would help him a ton. Yes i do agree when regher come over drew got a ton better now is that due to regher or the fact he didnt have to cover for ellerby and muzzins mistakes?
Next it comes down to ellerby / martinez / muzzin / ahl defenseman promotion.martinez and muzzin are either the 6th d man or there going to be traded so it will come down to muzzin or alec for 6 d spot To me if philly has interest in muzzin and willing to give up read thats the deal we should do. I think muzzin makes to many offensive pinches that will cost us. I think alec is much better making the decesion to join the rush. Also muzzin seems to have a higher trade value even if imo hes not as good as martinez

I would also like to give campbell a shot at getting the 7th spot in camp The better d stays. Campbell does things not many of our d man do thats blocks shots something if i remember right we are near the bottom of the league in doing.

drew mitchell/regher
slava suderi
muzzin /martinez greene

Campbell or ellerby

Doughty - Regehr
Voynov - Scuderi
Martinez - Greene
Ellerby

If we can get Scuderi and Regehr for 3m, and Voynov for 4m, I see this a possibility. Not a big fan of Muzzins. Also dependent on Mitchie not playing.

I like Regehr, but I think he's the odd man out provided MItchell is healthy (fingers crossed). We have a monopoly on all the SAH defensemen and one of those guys is gonna get paiiiiiiid

Scuderi is not replaceable yet imo, but I'm most worried about losing him

I'm actually thinking just the opposite. Scuds will be the odd man out, and Regehr will be retained. Under Sutter, Regehr has primarily played the 1st pairing whereas Scuds has played the bottom 2 pairings since the acquisition of RR. Also RR adds a physical dimension which Scuds doesn't. You really can't go wrong with either or, but if I had to choose one, I'd take RR over Scuds.

scuds has been solid for us for 4 seasons, sometimes we don't know what we have til it's gone, so i'd have to wish we resigned scuds first, and if there is space, then rr, :yo:

You make it sound so easy...make it so #1.

if i am DL i keep Scuds over RR. Scuds has a better all around game and is a better skater. Scuds has looked better with the reduced ice time since RR arrived. with Greene back this has further helped. Scuds still has miles in the tank, he just can't be put in the position he was early this season for TOI.

without WM back it will leave a SAH guy short. i don't think DL can afford RR and Scuds, while trying to re-sign VV.

the entire D corp is a very tenuous situation for DL this summer

RR is now signed for 2 more seasons. The ideal thing would be to resign Scuds to a 1 yr 3mil contract. That would allow another year for the kids to get seasoned some more.

It makes you wonder if we could get a young stay-at-home guy for Bernier + AMart or Bernier + Muzzin.
That would be an ideal situation, and I could be persuaded to include draft picks or a prospect to overpay a bit. Still, it's tough to imagine a team willing to deal a young, solid, stay-at-home guy with a bit of size and good first pass. Those kinds of players are gold in today's NHL.

i haven't been impressed with Regher at all. he has been 'an adequate' replacement, but he isn't Greene or Mitchell. slow foot speed (makes Greene look quick) and slow decisions especially in the defensive zone with the puck. he hasn't played as physical and punishing as i had expected

Also he is useless past his own blue line. I will say this he has helped the PK and that is important.

We also have to remember that part of keeping Scuds relies on Scuds wanting to stay and wanting to stay for the right cap hit
