Flew in to BUF Thurs dinner time for business Fri AM in Nia. Falls. Snow was delightful. After a late lunch, drove 219 to PA for my extended family's annual winter weekend camp party. South towns weren't bad. North towns way worse. Left 2:40, arrived 5:10. Usually only takes 2 hours in summer. Stewie definitely enjoying the snow. Just finished building the outdoor fire we'll use to spit-roast a deer.

Only 8" here overnight. It's mostly a heavy dusting and nothing extraordinary to a WNY expat. We dealt with freezing rain and slush yesterday. Our news says the higher numbers were for CT and LI, mainly Suffolk County locales, and I heard numbers ranging from 24-30", with hundred of cars stuck on the LIE.

Yeah, we got it pretty good up here in the Falls. I got about 16", friends that live up north closer to Lake Ontario are closer to 2 feet.

16" in Greece. Took me 2.5 hours to get home last night, and 1.5 hours to get out of the city.

East side was a mess too. 441 was closed because people couldn't even get on and off near Linden Ave/Panorama. Too hilly and no traction. Thankfully I don't have to take any highway in my commute and was behind a plow most of my ride home :)

Do you live in Penfield? That's where my job interview is...

I have a financial question.

My wife's sister is looking at houses and we all got talking about what you can or should spend. I always figured you shouldn't spend much more than twice your current yearly gross income on a loan. All the online calculators I've checked seem to indicate waaaay more.

Very tempting to look at upgrading though, that's for sure

Thoughts?

Yeah, that's about what we got in Ontario as well. I took the Friday off and basically just shoveled out my car a couple of hours ago. Definitely not as bad as the day after Christmas storm in this area.

Agreed. Plus I think it helped that I had cleared 6+ inches off my car yesterday afternoon and then parked in a plowed spot at home

I am certainly not a big basketball fan but this is now twice this week a college basketball game has kept me up later than I would have preferred.

Michigan/Ohio State earlier this week and now Louisville/Notre Dame and the later is now into double OT.

I think the best way to do it is work it backwards. Made an honest monthly budget showing all bills, gas money, groceries, etc etc etc, give a good spending buffer for stuff like clothes shopping / car repairs / whatever, give a savings buffer that you'll stick to and feel comfortable with, and see how much you have leftover. Just doubling salary seems like a thirty second solution to a thirty year commitment.

Most will tell you that you shouldn't spend more than 50% of your net on a mortgage payment. They will lend a higher amount but then you're in house debt and your quality of life suffers. She should also put in her criteria in regards to location, age etc as a different town will have a different tax ratio so she could get more, a newer house will have better insulation so the heating / cooling costs will be better and that can be quite significant.

I don't run the numbers like I used to since I have my Realtor take care of those hassles, but its take home pay to mortgage payment vice total income to price of house. So much breaks down to the loan rate as to how much you can afford.

Also, to anyone 18 or younger reading this, go to your local community college. Don't even think about an actual university. Unless you plan on making like $70k your first year out (lol), the weight of your crushing student loan debt will prevent you from ever doing anything.

Or just marry rich. I failed on that, too.
