EDIT: It is up to him. The question is - do you think he will opt for a trade?

The most upsetting thing about the Karlsson injury to me is that it killed Alfredsson's final chance of taking one last run at the Stanley Cup with Ottawa.

With both Spezza and Karlsson out, most of you think we will not make the playoffs. I agree.

In the event it is clear we won't make the playoffs at the deadline, do you think we will trade Alfredsson?

IMO, it will be Alfie's call, and he will go for it.

The fact that he's talking about wanting to play in Sochi tells me that next year will definitely be his swan song. He wants to wear the Tres Kronor one more time.

Your question is worded wrong IMO...

The question should be:

SHOULD Alfie be traded at end of season if not in the playoff hunt. I'd say yes. For his sake.

But it's up to him. The best we can do is to predict what he will want.

If he wants to play in Sochi 2014 then maybe he decides to stay and give it another go next year?

If he feels like he's retiring after this season, then why not go to a contender? Worked out great for Ray Bourque.

He's already gone on record and said that winning a Stanley Cup doesn't mean anything to him if he can't win it with the Ottawa Senators.

I think the organization will respect his wishes about this sort of thing.

I didn't see this thread when I post this in your trade rumours thread: (probably more suited here)

Just horrible luck; I feel for you guys this year. I was sick to my stomach for days when Bure tore his mcl and was done for the season.

So if the playoffs are out of the question come the trade deadline do you think that Alfedsson is untouchable?

(ducks to avoid rotten tomatoes...)

I can't envision Alfie not retiring a Senator, but Boston fans must have felt the same about Bourque. Do you think he'd waive his NTC (I'm just assuming he has one) to go to Vancouver and play with the Sedins and have one last crack at the cup? And what do you think would be fair value?

Honestly?

No.

I can't think of a team this year that is a clear SC contender, which just means it's a crap shoot and seeing him in another jersey isn't worth that.

The way alfie has looked this year, I'm not sure he will play another. Maybe he's still showing rust, but he's looking slow, foot speed and his decisions with the puck.

How about if we ship Gonchar and Alfredsson in a package deal to Pittsburgh?

I think we all agree that he gets to call his shot here. As others have said, he has said he only wants to win a Cup with Ottawa. So the question is really 'do you think he'll change his mind?' . IMHO, I say no. I think as much as he wants a Cup, he'd rather be a lifetime Senator and not win a Cup than win a Cup in another jersey. Plus, the fact that there is no clear-cut favourite this year means its a crap shoot wherever he goes.

On a personal note, though I want him to get his Cup, if he won it with a team like Vancouver or Pittsburgh (ESPECIALLY Pittsburgh), I think I'd be sick.

It's up to him but he's said multiple times he wants to end his career as a Senator even though that means no cup. Seriously doubt his mindset has changed.

I agree with this. Alfie still has his moments where he can really take over a game but he doesn't have the same consistency. He doesn't really have that extra gear like in years past.

I see this as likely his last year and if he wants to try and win a cup then we should trade him. The decision is his really.

Echoing most others here, but it's clear that he doesn't want to win a cup elsewhere. His priority is to retire a Senator.
