DCox twitter: Leafs offer for Luongo at last draft

Speculation is Burke didn't want to make the trade and that was one of the reasons they fired him.

Right, so Nonis didn't make the trade either and he still has a job. I don't understand the logic behind your argument.

Since many of us are speculating and theorizing what happened, I could make up a theory too:

Gillis goes to Burke at the draft, "I'll give you Luongo for Kadri, Bozak and a pick".

Burke says, "Are you crazy? What about that contract? I mean, I got Phaneuf for a bag of pucks because of his hefty contract."

Gillis: "Suit yourself".

So nothing happens, then while the lockout endures, Gillis gets even more greedy and later raises his asking price to Gardiner, Frattin, 1st and more.

Burke: "F...off"

I'm not defending Burke because the truth is not revealed, but what we all know is that Gillis is trying to commit robbery with a goalie tied to a bad contract. No GM is dumb enough to pay a huge premium (and sacrificing their own team's future) while at the same time helping to relieve Gillis of his big mistake.

They couldn't convince Burke to do it because he was clearly too stubborn, so perhaps they think they could convince Nonis? That concept is not too hard to grasp. Truth is, MLSE didn't have time to go through a thorough hiring process (Anselmi admitted) because of the end of the lockout. He has a job because he's a very competent GM.

All this firing over Burke because he didn't want Lou is all speculation; I work in a corporate environment for a very reputable firm, and I know if your personality clashes with your new boss [unfortunately in Burke's case, his new boss(es) also happens to be the new owner(s)], you're as good as gone and that could have nothing to do with competence at your job. It's all politics and it exists everywhere, but more pronounced in these environments.

Nonis wasn't in charge, Burke was. Not that I think that's why Burke got fired, though I recall the rumours. But the logic is sound.

Well, real life is not always black or white, yes or no. Things change and personalities are a contributing factor in personnel decisions. The fact that, for some of you, it HAS to be either scenario A or B and nothing in between and then basically condescend to everyone else with a different opinion is humorous.

Maybe you can wrap your head around this logic. Burke has an abrasive personality to his boss. His boss thinks he knows about hockey. Burke tells his boss where to stick his team personnel decisions. It becomes more about the principle than actual decisions to the board and even though TA may want a trade done, it's now more about Burke than any decisions he is or is not making.

Fast forward to Nonis. He gets the job and respectfully lays out his case as to why he should be making all hockey decisions but board input is always appreciated. Since it was more about Burke and his personality than any specific decision, the board is ok with that.

This is how decisions are really made. Lots of politics and personality clashes. Any reason for firing someone at that level is often about the "other" reasons.
