WJC: Day 1: Pre-game talk

Have had a good feeling about the swedish team, but for every hour passing I get more and more negative.

Maybe we will not even reach qf this time.

Win for the Czechs, 7-1.

With Denmark having the 2018 WC your last statement sure is as you call it "a gutsy call", since they cant get relegated that specific year :D

However we will not become the new Czech Republic any time soon. The political environment are not ready to invest millions in a niche sport as long as it doesnt have the same approval as handball and football. Kids are waiting in line to play hockey, but still they local governments can not find the money to build more rinks. It saddens me.

Yeah, Denmark has the WC, not WJC meaning their juniors can get relegated which is what I'm saying

Didn't the Czechs lose to Slovakia with 3-1 the other day? I'd say it's worse than Swedens loss against USA.

It will be a close game if Ward is in the net, otherwise I think we take this pretty easy.

Its pre- competition. Means nothing. One year the Czechs played pre-comp with Canada and only lost by 1. Then it came to the real tournament and Canada won something like 8-1. People who take the pre-comp seriously don't know what theyre talking about. not one year has it proven the way things will turn out. Losing 10-5 is pretty bad no matter who its too. But I don't take it as a sign that Sweden will suck because they don't and it means nothing.

They are a very good team but so are the Czechs. You obviously know nothing about Czech hockey or any of the players. The 97 group of Czechs is stronger then Swedens or Russias and the 96's are close.

The only player on Sweden better then Pastrnak or Vrana is Nylander. imo. Does that mean Czechs will beat Sweden? No. But I think you underestimate the Czechs. And judging them by a pre tourney game isn't right.

I'll call it 5-3 Russia. 2 goals for Ehlers and 1 for Bjorkstrand/

I don't really know anything about the Russian team this year, but Ehlers and Bjorkstrand will help Denmark make a name for themselves at this tournament. I predict that they'll be regular participants in top tier IIHF tournaments from here on out.

Denmark in general is rapidly increasing the amount of quality hockey players they provide to the NHL. I think Ehlers in particular is going to be a star. Ehlers, Eller, Edler, Boedkker and Bjorkstrand (try saying that 3 times fast!) are guys that could really inspire a lot of young Danish kids to pursue hockey over soccer (or piano or ipads or whatever kids are into these days), and I think they're going to be the new Czech Republic

Lol to this. That's just like saying that Denmark will become Finland and Russia too. Cause these next few years of Czech players are the best they've had in over a decade and have won back to back silver medals in u18's.

Denmark have progressed a lot, and may continue to do so, but at a very slow pace.

Hockey is god in Finland and Switzerland, and although Soccer is very popular in the Czech Rep. Hockey is still big there.

In Denmark - Not so much.

Can - 4
slv - 1

den - 2
rus - 6

swe - 2
cze - 3

fin - 4
us - 1

Canada wins 5-1 or 6-1 not surprising. Slovaks have no shot, Canada are going to come out with a ton of energy, hopefully a loud Bell Centre, this team isn't going to screw around, they're too fast, too skilled and just too talented. Good luck Slovaks you're going to need it.

In other games I think Finland plays the U.S tight and the score will be 3-2 for the U.S in the end. As a Leaf fan interested in seeing how Nylander does.

I think we might see some first day blowouts. Canada and the US are just too loaded and Denmark has a couple of real gamebreakers, but still plays defense like Denmark.

I feel like the US-FIN game will be close. It doesn't really matter which players are iced for the Fins, they usually have great chemistry, coaching and goaltending which makes any game close.

I feel like the Canada and Russia games will be blowouts though.
