Renaud Lavoie just telling that there's a team having Reinbacher at 3rd spot on their list.

Good to hear!

Nice to hear. Since the draft, I'm more confident that Habs made the right pick. NLA is a very good league and with what he have done in his rookie year in NLA, that's such encouraging. We grab a top 5 pick worthy, for sure.

I think Michkov would had been toxic on a Habs line up with Suzuki-Caufield and others.

In Philly, he's gonna be the main cog from the start. That's what he wanted.

As for Reinbacher, i am surprised people are complaining that much about his selection. People here are crying since ages for a real PMD. That's what he is. A Markov with more size and muscle.
He's a mix of P.K. Subban and Andrei Markov. The best of both worlds.

Please... let's keep logic out of this. This is elements of fandom blinded by their adherence to consensus. I'm sure there were some here that were willing to trade the 5OA to Seattle for Wright in a last gasp effort to undo and rectify the error and tragedy of selecting Slafkovsky 1 OA in 2022. Such is the lure and power of the consensus.
Yeah this whole ‘it’s a forward draft’ narrative is driving me bananas.

Reinbacher could very well go 3rd in a re-draft when all is said and done. And people are almost mad that he fills a need as well. Like top pairing potential RDs aren’t extremely coveted regardless of positional need.

I can easily envision a world where Slaf and Reinbacher could easily be a better tandem than Jiricek and Michkov.

Yeah, Reinbacher have a great style of play. He is very good at D, but he show that he can be really good at offensive zone aswell. He is not Makar, but he can skate with the puck. Can't wait to see him with Habs!

The fact not even one guy was banging the table to draft Michkov is baffling.
No, it's really not, because we're talking about public comments, not what actually happened behind the scenes. I am highly doubtful that there was absolutely nobody at all advocating to pick Michkov (or even for Leonard, Dvorsky, etc. for that matter) at 5, but our fanbase has been losing their minds about this pick for 3 days now. Why on earth would the FO start talking about being divided and having a significant contingent that wanted Michkov right now? They didn't pick Michkov, they're saying Reinbacher was our guy, and they're trying to move on from this entire stupid saga.

At the end of the day it is clear that teams did not agree with this generational billing or the idea that the talent was so overwhelming that you can't pass on him, and/or they were more concerned about risk factors than the internet was. Once Bedard was off the board, five teams chose other players instead of Michkov. If the NHL consensus was as strong on this player as the HFboards and Habs twitter consensus is, Grier would have been sprinting to the podium to pick him at 4th, but instead he took Will Smith who has virtually all the same on-ice warts as Michkov and most likely a lower ceiling. NHL teams aren't infallible but they're not so stupid that they pass on a guy they assess as a true generational talent for Will f***ing Smith.

If you adjust your projection on this player from "generational talent" to "first-line star talent" the way this whole saga unfolded makes a ton more sense. The Flyers were thrilled to get their (more talented) equivalent to Caufield to start building a new core/top 6. Montreal just gave Caufield 8 years and didn't want to lock in a second one-dimensional small winger (no, Newhook isn't the same thing, he's bigger and a better two-way guy and did not cost a 5th overall pick), so they took the big horse on RD. The Coyotes presumably were told he wouldn't sign there (We have pretty solid indications from Friedman that Michkov was trying to pick his spot), so they took a home run swing on a D given their deep forward pool. The Sharks have been bad for 2-3 years and basically only had Mukhamadullin and Eklund in the system, so they took a guy they hope will become their future 1C and passed on the contract headaches.

For all of this drama I feel like the Sharks, Habs, and Flyers will all end up happy with the outcome here. Michkov probably becomes the best player of the three, but not by such a large margin and not without enough agita that the Sharks or Habs regret their decisions at the draft table. For instance, Caufield probably ends up the biggest star from 2019 after Jack Hughes, but I don't think the Ducks or Wild are ever going to regret picking Zegras and Boldy.

Such heresy.

As much as I loved the General he kind of wilted in the playoffs outside his 2002 kind of coming out party.

If Reinbacher can be anything like how Pietrangelo was against us in the conference finals than I‘d take Reinbacher over both those names

I have figured out the source of the disconnect for you. You’re surprised because you think he’s a real PMD. Reinbacher is not that. His two tools on offense are a decent shot he gets at net (which isn’t exceptional or anything) and he’s good at breakout passes. He will never run a PP like a Markov. Even Hughes has admitted as much.

On the bright side it’s clear after this very public backlash that Hughes will give Reinbacher every chance to come good so he doesn’t look like an idiot. Which is good. All prospects should be given patience and opportunities.

The fact the habs were so surprised by how disappointed the fans were tells me what an echo chamber exists in their scouting room. The fact not even one guy was banging the table to draft Michkov is baffling.
Perhaps they saw what some of us saw: a skilled undersized player who lacked dynamic skating. For a supposed generational player, 5 other teams had no trouble passing on him. I’m glad that we have let another team be in a position of hoping that he can find that required extra gear that will allow him to flourish in the NHL. Generational player or not.

With a touch of Bobby Orr.

We will have ton of options on the PP, Hutson, Reinbacher, Engstrom, Mailloux all have alot of potential to pivot one of our top PP units. Habs blueline will be top 3 in the league with Detroit, Buffalo.

I love how much transition ability our D will have, particularly if Engström stays on his trajectory. Good luck pinning these guys down.

You don't need to kiss Molson's feet brother. We're more important than Molson, Hughes, and Gorton combined. We'll be here after they're long gone. Please keep that in mind. It sucks having a dipshit owner of our hometown team, you should allow for fans to vent about him without immediately cramming down our throats about how powerless we are. If not here and among fellow fans, then where can we vent?
i'm far from a molson fan. but there are just some things we can't control. i hope you guys can realize that. sure you guys can vent all you want, at the end of the day, you're only hurting yourself, not them.

Molson is not just a businessman, he’s an inheritor. He didn’t build, or even improve, anything. Molson ended up with a bunch of businesses and a franchise that make enough money that he doesn’t have to be smart or take good advice.

He can continue to muddle along for another 3 decades of mediocrity and keep his lifestyle and even his ego. Molson is rich enough he only needs to speak to sycophants.

Stick with the team if it’s fun but don’t expect caring or competence from ownership.
i don't expect caring from them, lol. as for competence, as long as i see constant changes when things don't work out, i'm good with that. last time i check, a direction was all we were asking for. now we have one and we just have to sit back and trust the process.

From what I understand, the only reason Reinbacher was in the swiss league is because he was not supposed to be that good. Most Swiss born players go the CHL route because swiss league is a results based league, not known to develop/give ice time to young, developing player.

Reinbacher, while Austrian, had a swiss license so he was not counted as an "import" when they dressed him (they can only dress 6 "imports" each game), which helped as well.

Reinbacher just blew everybody's expectations away, going from a late pick/unknown prospect in September, to a mid-late 1st rounder in December, to a top 10 pick late in the season. Reminds a bit of Seider's rise in his draft year, especially if you consider that both were playing in non traditional "draft leagues" (swiss and german pro leagues).

His development curve looks to be exponential... Not a bad idea to draft those risers.

Former NHLer Daniel Winnik, who played against him this year, think he's already superior RIGHT NOW to a great top 4 NHL D in Adam Larsson.View attachment 724549
Yeah, Reinbacher is a bit of a unique case. I'm not sure he goes 5th overall if Kloten doesn't get promoted. He could have completely destroyed the SL but the NL is obviously a far better league.

Obviously, an NL team could have bought him out of his contract if Kloten didn't get promoted but firstly that would have been unlikely to happen and secondly, he probably wouldn't have gotten the same opportunities elsewhere in the NL.

So you can definitely say that Reinbacher was lucky and in the right spot at the right time. Having said that, he earned everything he got and he was good enough to make the best out of his opportunities. He averaged 7 (!) minutes more in the NL compared to the year before in the SL. He doubled his ice time over the summer if you compare SL playoffs and the first NL games. Heck, even his now 36yo defense partner averaged several (I think it ended up being around 3:30) more in the NL. Reinbacher even managed to make the team vet better.

Kloten Coach Tomlinson is a smart man. He knew right away what he had in Reinbacher. His team is one of few in Switzerland's NL that doesn't have seemengly unlimited money to throw at players. So when they got promoted, he just went full yolo mode and relied heavily on Reinbacher pretty much from game 1 and never looked back. The rest is history. Reinbacher/Kellenberger played the toughest minutes and were still the lone plus players on the team. They, and the strong PP, were the reasons why Kloten avoided Playouts and made it into pre Playoffs.

So yeah, it's possible Reinbacher was lucky and is more of an under the radar pick if Kloten doesn't get promoted but firstly that doesn't make him a worse prospect and secondly, you gotta be good enough to capitalize on such a chance and Reinbacher was.

Regarding Switzerland, sadly you're right. The problem is that coaching is very poor. There's very few good Swiss born coaches and clubs have to hire foreigners. That, and the wealthy clubs not caring about prospect development, leads to rather poor junior leagues. To make the jump from juniors to NL is very tough and not all NL teams have a farm team or affiliation deals with SL clubs. In fact, EV Zug, the most successful club in Swiss hockey the last few years, withdrew their academy team which produced lots of prospects for them and other NL teams from the SL ahead of last season. So at the end of the day, Swiss junior leagues are too weak to still play there in your draft season but the jump to the NL proves to be too difficult for most kids especially since, when in doubt, they won't even get a chance. As a kid, you usually only get to play if you prove to be better than any vet the team has and could potentially sign. SL is a good option but those spots are limited as well and even though it should be, it's not a traditional development league so if your team doesn't have an affilitation it can be tough to get a fair chance there as well. Also, coaching isn't very good either. So sadly, I agree Switzerland isn't usually a great place for prospect development. Even the Swiss top prospects mostly leave the country at some point. It can still work out even for foreigners though but it's not a model that would work for everyone and having a Swiss playing licence (as you mentioned Reinbacher has) helps. A few recent prospects have played in Switzerland...even foreigners like Auston Matthews, Elvis Merzlikins, Brennan Othmann or Mason McTavish but you have to be in the right spot at the right time for this to work.

They know Michkov more than any of us.united. And if he was the 2nd most talented player after Bedard, how come 5 teams did not picked him ? Not only the Habs.

Reinbacher at 18 was running Kloten's PP already. With Mailloux' shot. it's gonna be an awesome PP combo.

Sometimes getting to much informations is bad. It makes you overthink and make bad decisions because of that.

Hughes and Gorton seems like overthinker. Pair that wit Martin Lapointe and Bobrov who really are not that good at drafting and you get a bad combo.

Trying to imagine if this monster played in the CHL last year against his own age group. He would've been unfair. Might have actually been out of reach at the 5th pick.

We’ve seen that that’s not that true. Mesar is a good example.

At the same time, he wouldnt have had the same challenges which made him better. One of his qualities is being a good learner. He learned more in the pros than if hed been in juniors.

Sorry if I didn't read the 110 pages. Too much to read and frankly, not that much interesting. Here's my little 2 cents. My bad if I repeat some points that came out earlier in this thread.

I've been complaining for years now about not having a QB for the PP.
For me, this is an ultra basic need to build a winning team.
I was r-e-a-l-l-y pissed off when they selected KK. I wanted Quinn Hugues.

Well, as of June 28, I see some light at the end of the tunnel.
My QB will be Hutson. What a pick... But we needed more.
To help a QB like Hutson - which is small and offensive focused - we need a 1B, someone who can play with him, has some sense of offensive play and can follow the rythm without compromising the back end. We didn't have that profile up to now.
I believe Reinbacher is that guy. I watched every video available. IMO, this is the perfect fit to Hutson.
I'm very, very, very happy with the pick.

Yes, we need an elite 1c (I dont believe Suzuki is). It will come in due time, I'm confident.
I like the plan.
