Brown's brother-in-law is apparently John Mara.

His brother is Doug Brown, who played almost 900 NHL games. I remember him with the Wings.

Wow. All these ties to Leetch/Richter and the NHL already? And he has an extended history with Quinn?

He should be great for the young/modern defense the Rangers are putting together, assuming he is used in the same capacity he had at BC. Seems like the BC crowd is disappointed with this news, which is a good thing for us.

This is so confusing, I am ready to throw in the towel. So this guy is — not — from the same school, in Boston, as Dave Quinn? Or is it the other way around?

Are we sure that Gorton even noticed this? Nice first impression that would be, ‘hey Davey we got you your old assistant, Brown!!’ Brown and Quinn looks oddly at each other, both thinking fast — do we tell him or not?

Quinn is from Boston University (Terriers). The team Shattenkirk, B. Tkachuk and Eichel played for.
Brown is from Boston College (Eagles). The team Kreider, Hayes and Eaves played for.

Boston University Terriers have a boring red and white jersey
Boston College Eagles have a beautiful maroon-gold jersey

I remember Greg Brown fairly well as a player. He was really liked in Sweden when he played for Leksand. A bit of a cult player. RHS PMD, good shot, fairly small. Liked by teammates and media.

He has a broad experience, a lot of influences from different environments. That is good.

He will be good for our PMDs, I hope.

Neither jersey is particularly great imhk.

I really like the Minnesota wild 3rd jersey.

Greg Brown was a 1st rounder I think the year Leetch was drafted. They both went to BC. They both played in the Olympics together along with Mike Richter, Corey Millen, Clark Donatelli and Tony Granato (who is going to be K'Andre Miller's coach). All of those guys were Rangers draft picks--all played in the NHL. And as mentioned above his brother Doug played a long time in the NHL. Greg also played in the NHL but not nearly as long as his brother. Greg also will know Kreider and Kevin Hayes very well.

Our 3rds are the best 3rds in the league.

I love Ottawa's 3rds too, about the only thing that franchise has been able to get right.
Noone has thirds anymore, new third are slowly being introduce by Adidas starting this season with about 10 teams getting thirds i think. (Not us)

Brown was a 2nd rounder in '83 or'89 i cant remember.

I mean... you jest, but it's kind of true. But this is every circle of employment. Sometimes it's not what you know, it's who you know. There is a major Boston-area connection forming with the Rangers right now. I'm not saying that Brown isn't qualified to step behind an NHL bench right now. He's certainly paid his dues. But I also wouldn't ignore the connection.

And yes, good point below, if it adds to Quinn's comfort level, then great. But at this stage, I'd really hope they maintain Ruff. I think he'll come in handy.

I'm glad that they allowed Quinn to choose his guy in this respect though.

They "gave" him Ruff which is fine, but I'd want my HC to choose his guys for the other 2 vacancies.

And even Ruff, I don't think was truly forced on Quinn. Before it was announced that Ruff was staying, the report was that Quinn and Ruff were talking to see if there was a mutual interest in Ruff sticking around. It may have been that Ruff was "suggested" to Quinn, but if Quinn really didn't want him I don't think the team would have forced Ruff on him.

They're nice but it's time for a refresh. Reminds me too much of the Torts-era. I don't remember them wearing the heritages much if it all last season. A 2018 re-boot of the lady liberty jerseys would be cool to see.

You're right on part of it and I'm right on the other. He was a 2nd--not a 1st. He was drafted in 1986 though--same year as Leetch.

Everyone knows everyone. I was surfing around, just randomly checked a roster of San Diego Gulls of the IHL that Greg Brown played on in 93’-94’. Scott Arniel and Peter Laviolette was on the same team as players. So was the Dineen bro, Gord, who is assistant to Sheldon Keefe for the Marlies. Who else? Clark Donatelli who I recognize as the coach for the US in the U18, we mentioned him re the HC position, WBs AHL Coach. John Andersson who is an assistant in Minny and who have been a HC in the AHL.

i assume you are kidding, this isn't that hard,
none of us confuse New York Islanders and New York Rangers
somehow Brit soccer fans (sorry for your loss) get the difference between Man U and Man City

these are 2 of longest-standing and most successful US college hockey programs
and as noted have long winding NYR connections

It’s like we had HV71.4159265359 and HV71.4139265359 in Sweden. Would they be easy to tell apart? Didn’t think so.
