Player Discussion: David Jiricek

If this happens, I feel it's because Waddell is not panicking but avoiding this turning a distraction (ie circus). CBJ is growing and making the next step and the Monsters are playing exceptional hockey.

CBJ D is arguably its forte, with Mateychuk and Svozil simmering on the farm.

We might have one decent RHD, and he was a waiver pickup.

I would hesitate to call D their forte when these are still minor league players. Our NHL roster d is still pretty weak and the guy playing along side our 1 Norris trophy candidate right now was a waiver pickup about a week ago. I'd take an NHL ready controlled young D over bringing either of those guys up to Columbus right now. No harm in letting them cook in Cleveland.

I would hesitate to call D their forte when these are still minor league players. Our NHL roster d is still pretty weak and the guy playing along side our 1 Norris trophy candidate right now was a waiver pickup about a week ago...

While I don't disagree with your overall comment, I think some people might be under-estimating our waiver pickup. I think it's safe to say the Preds are a bit aimless at the moment: spent to the cap, looked great on paper, things have been mostly a disaster 1/4 through the season, team is still trying to win now and is moving chess pieces around the board and it feels forced and rudderless. It feels like Fabbro was waived in the middle of this early-season restructuring trying make cap space...but for what?

I don't know if Fabbro is a top pairing d-man but I do think he has been a solid partner for Z on our top pair. He is a very responsible defenseman with a nice first pass out of the zone and he gives Z the confidence to be Z not having to worry about his partner F'ing up. Waiver wire pickup or not, I call this one a win and he has me wondering what that top pairing looks like the rest of the season and if Fabbro at 26 is a mid-long term solution for us on the blue line.

I honestly don’t know how good Fabbro is, but I did know he has been a far more effective partner with Zach than either Provorov or Severson.

If they trade him I kinda believe it's because he's asked out or made it clear he doesn't see his long term future with the Jackets. Or the offers they are getting are way better than some posters suggest here. I don't think any GM looks to move a higher end 20/21 year old D-prospect for a bag of pucks just because.

Or because they’ve made a determination about the player from a fit/attitude/locker room perspective and/or his development.

All I can say folks is prepare to be disappointed.

The question is to what degree

It’s almost a guarantee that the player we get in return will both be a better skater and see the ice better than Jiricek. Not to mention the fact that he’s clearly a “headache” behind the scenes. Probably both short and long term.

Some of us aren’t disappointed about getting Harris for Laine, even after seeing Harris play. For some of the same reasons everyone shouldn’t really be that disappointed by the team moving Jiricek.

Not saying anything about him specifically but it's more of an indictment of the rest of the D depth. Fabbro seems to be a great fit. Seems all but certain Provorov will be moved at some point. Who knows how long until Gubranson is back?

Fabbro seems to be a good fit. We just need NHL level d who are a good fit for the other positions. the Cleveland D prospects should only ever get called up when they can be utilized at their best fit. Jiricek was never even played at his best fit while here. He couldn't ever get more than 3rd pair minutes. He shuld have been playing top 2-4 minutes all along wherever he played and I put most of that on Jarmo last season for F'ing his development.

Who cares that Fabbro was a waiver pick up....Isn't that a good thing, getting a serviceable D for nothing??

I wasn't saying to bring those guys up - like you mentioned, let them stay on the farm. The CBJ D works for the time being.

I think I prefer when the conversation is less "I dunno, we got this guy for free after all" and more "OMG I can't believe we got THIS guy FOR FREE".

My only concern about the blueline at this point is whether or not we can expect Severson to be worth keeping around. And that might depend on how well he and Mateychuk (or Svozil) mesh. If he can't be relied on - and there are times I definitely wonder - we've got potential issues there.
