Comparing a potential defenseman trade to a goalie trade is hilarious. Has goalie value ever been lower in hockey?

Seriously, I am completely f***ing done with folks constantly pulling this "helpful explanation" bullshit of how the trade market works and why it inevitably means that we have to continue losing somehow. We've been in the league for a quarter f***ing century now and a fair number of us were hockey fans for even longer than that. We've seen this shit unfold before. We're not a bunch of newbie rubes. Show a little g-ddamn respect already.

Jiricek is not returning a top 5 pick or equivalent value and I love the kid. 2022 was a weak class and he was picked 6th.

And Aaron Portzline reported what I just said. He also noted that he doesn't think it's as imminent as others seem to think. Listening to what Waddell himself has been saying, he sounds like a guy who is not in a hurry to trade Jiricek.

The 2025 class is also considered weak. Where would Jiricek have gone in a re-draft?

To your second, and actually interesting, point: no. Going into the season, I might have thought Calgary's pick had higher value than Montréal's. If CBJ thinks Calgary's pick will be top 10, then that's a different story. The original post said around pick 22, so that's what I responded. My point is that if Waddell trades Jiricek for pick 22 and unremarkable prospect, I don't believe that benefits the Blue Jackets and thus goes against Waddell's motivation for even listening to trade offers in the first place.

The structure of the Askarov trade sets a precedent for what it takes to get a former top pick who "wants a fresh start", but I don't see how Jiricek has the value Askarov did. Askarov is the best prospect in the world at his position, was on the cusp of NHL time (and has showed in his two games with the Sharks so far that he's absolutely NHL-ready), and was only even available because of the Saros extension. If Columbus came to me asking for Askarov in exchange for Jiricek, I'd hang up the phone.

Well, here are some facts:
- Jiricek has explicitly not requested a trade.
- Teams have been told that they don't have anything of interest
- Waddell had him in the NHL line-up because he thought Jiricek looked amazing in the AHL and wanted to give him all the chance in the world to crack the NHL line-up.
- Both Waddell and Evason say that Jiricek took his demotion well.
- Waddell has said that he will consider a trade if the right offer comes along, if it helps the team.

In my opinion, unless another GM goes crazy for Jiricek, he will remain with Columbus for the time being. That does not mean he never gets moved. But I don't see how moving someone who one year ago was near-universally considered one of the best RHD prospects in hockey for a package around a late 1st round draft pick benefits Columbus.

Aside from one (1) Columbus journalist, everyone else is saying they are rushing to make that trade or at the very least not taking their time. Jiricek has not explicitly requested a trade, but we can safely assume that it has been the case since he's on the block. You don't trade a big, talented RHD at 20 years old (21 today!) unless he asks for a trade. They are simply too rare of a commodity and need to just trade one out just for the sake of it.

I've said it many times, this isn't on management. Jiricek needs more time to tune up his game in the AHL. He's not NHL ready (yet) but he truly thinks he is. Whether it's bad advice from people around him (just like McGroarty) or misplaced self-confidence the issue remains the same. I personally don't like young players who think they are entitled to an NHL roster spot rather than work for one and I am pretty certain a lot of people feels that way too.

As for the comments about Jiricek taking "well" his demotion, I'm not entirely sure what else could have been said. I can't imagine the circus it would've created if they said he didn't take it well and privately asked for a trade—which seems a more likely outcome but we'll never know.

Again, as for the return, this is none of my business. It's been reported that Montreal was in on Jiricek but I doubt they are too serious about it. My bet is they are poking around without being too competitive with their offers. They already have two similar caliber big RHD prospects in Reinbacher and Mailloux. They don't necessarily need another one, especially not a the expense of another high-quality prospect elsewhere.

That's like every single bad franchise in the league goes through that. How many times do Canadian franchises get dunked on? What about Southern teams back in the day?

Get real, no one's out to get you.
 
Yager for McGroarty or Dach for the 123th or whatever is probably what Columbus is looking at. Askarov doesn't matter

The bolded still happens. And don't even try to claim Canadian franchises get the same "you just don't understand hockey" treatment. The homer accusations are one thing and they do indeed happen everywhere (and, yes, it's more common of an accusation for more popular teams); the "this is obviously new to you" talking down attitude is very different.

And I didn't claim it's unique to the Jackets; I merely asserted that folks really ought to just cut that shit out. If they quit it with teams other than the Jackets that's even better.

As long as they don't move WIllander for him, and if thats the case, I don't see what we have that Columbus wants and that can't be beaten by quite a few teams.

Also this hardly seems like the type of player we need now, given he can't even make a Jackets team that is bottom of the league.

Werenski, Severson and Provorov were the top 3. Gudbranson contractually at $4 mill was going to play. Left with beating out 2 of old Jack Johnson and Harris with his 140 odd nhl games and Christiansen with his 40 odd nhl games. Jiricek had like almost as many nhl games under his belt as Christiansen coming into the season.

Van seems to want someone who can play now. So that’s not a fit.
