I just read/saw the article and interview by Haggs, interesting. Judging by that article, it states both Marchand and Bergy spoke with Backes two times each prior to July 1st. Wondering how this works, if Sweeney calls Bergy and Marchand, says the B`s have heavy interest in Backes and would they give him a ring?

Anyone here know if that is likely how this occurred?

Well, dude hasn't even stepped on the ice and yet has been doing community appearances. Pretty cool.

One of the reasons I love hockey players. While living in Ottawa, I worked at a restaurant that was essentially the "go to" for Senators events to raise funds for various causes and those events were constant and at every opportunity, while the Sens were in town, you could always expect a handful of them at the restaurant to help the cause.

Not discussing contract, age or anything else that will cause controversy, David Backes is a class act off the ice, worked hard in St. Louis establishing Athletes for Animals, convinced a number of NHL players after the 2014 Sochi olympics to adopt dogs from Sochi and bring them back, he does hospital visits and he and his wife are active in their community. He isn't somebody the team will have to suggest being involved locally, I think he will embrace the area.

I know a lot of hockey players are involved with local charities, but if you look at the type of character players the Bruins drafted this season, the signings of Backes this year and Belesky last you can see they are trying to run a team the right way. Character players who work hard.

And ODAAT feels the same way I do regarding dogs, which again shows Backes character

good post

OT: took the pooch out for 1.5 hour walk as our days here so humid early morning strolls a must. Got back, looked at the car wash bay in our underground parking as a great spot to hose down the old boy and the laughs I got having this Beagle getting hosed down in this huge car wash bay was priceless.

A longtime advocate of animal rescue endeavors, dating to his college days in Minnesota, Backes and wife Kelly are committed to maintaining their charitable efforts once they become full-time Bostonians. Their stop at Angell came amid a week in which they’ve been scouring the suburbs, trying to find just the right new home for their one-year-old daughter Stella, and their four dogs and two cats.

“The wife, then the baby, and the dogs, the cats,’’ mused Backes, considering who will get the final say selecting the family’s new address, “and then I am at the end of that list.’’

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen where Backes, 32, fits into a Bruins lineup plagued by a paucity of scoring down the stretch last season, failing to make the playoffs for a second straight season. A career center, Backes could be popped over to the wing, possibly to fill out a trio with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand. If so, the adoption advocate sounds eminently adaptable

If he's a dog lover, all the more reason I'm gonna like him....

I refuse to post in the Loui/Backes thread; that ********* has devolved, from what I've seen, into two sides tearing both players down. I was one of the few that defended Loui when he first came to Boston,, and I am sad to see him go now. We're gonna miss his defensive abilities and his courage in front of the net.

BUt what REALLY bothers me is seeing Backes already implied as 'useless' because he's probably not going to be putting up 70 points seasons here. It's ridiculous. Why can't people just give this guy a chance to actually play and see what happens? Hell this is the exact same thing that happened when Loui first came to Boston too; everybody complained that he was already 'declining' and would probably never score 30 goals again...and that he was just some 'OK' two way player...

Look what happened there.

C'mon now, it's pretty much a criminal offense around here to like and appreciate BOTH Backes and Eriksson. We can't have that. You can only like one and must despise the other.

As I understand it, in Loui Eriksson's case, his agents (JP Barry and Peter Werner) called Loui during the night of the deadline (after 12pm I assume) and presented the offers and proposals Loui had received from teams and discussed the alternatives. Provided this is true (no reasons not to think so) this surely must mean that the agents had contact with other teams before the deadline but that they only could forward these offers to Loui after the deadline?

Don't we have someone here at the boards with an Agent license that could provide details on what you can do and not do? Because if teams can speak with the players' agents before a deadline, then surely there must be some leakage...

So Eriksson wanted out. disappointed

We got a guy that not only wants to be here but is already involved in the community

Did Marchand and Bergeron ask Loui to stay?

I like Loui but hold a cat or something - show people you care

The guy just took the most money-another Ellsbury to me

Played well but wasn't enamored, didn't make it a home or get attached. Maybe losing the one-eyed yeti opened his eyes.

It's as if he never unpacked. That concussion ruined what could have been a great year and a Cup. Being traded for Seguin is tough. Good to very good player and just such bad luck that first year.

I would have given him 6 per even 4 years

Love Loui as a player, but excited to get a guy who is this emotional about losing:

It's like Hockey Fax

Hmm? Hmmmm? Let me see. Teams soft? Right wing young. No one on the right side who's scored 20 even. Nice to get a guy who can replace Kelly and play the last minute of periods, kill penalties, and take the pressure off of Bergeron and Krejci. Leadership would be nice to get a guy in like a Recchi- maybe a former captain. Get somebody all these kids can look up to how to play the game.

Even if in year 5 he's like Mark Recchi getting 15 goals he will other ways like Recchi to help

Maybe he will be the RW on a line with JFK and Ryan Donato

I get the feeling he had it pretty rough in Boston primarily due to the unmentionable one thing and a couple of concussions in that first season that set him back big-time. Plus, he never really got comfortable with a consistent centerman during his stay.

In the end, it appears Sweeney and co wanted to move in another direction with Backes (they really couldn't sign both), so wether Loui wanted to stay or not became a moot point. If he had taken an early deal during the season and left some money and/or years on the table, I'm sure the FO would have been happy with that as well, but I think Sweeney played this shrewdly, got a better fit for his vision of the Bs, and Loui had no choice but to pack his bags.

Newest Bruin David Backes ready to dive right in

“The reception that I’ve had in the three, four weeks I’ve been a Boston Bruin, you can tell there’s some passion and tons of people that just yearn for another (Stanley) Cup, even though it was five years ago there was a parade here. That’s why I came here.â€

He was sold on the team’s pitch, especially a couple of phone calls with prospective linemates Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand.

“Being an outsider, we have to have a little confession and say that Marchand is a guy that kind of gets under everybody’s skin and I was no different,†Backes said. “Then talking to him in the interview process before July 1, I hang up the phone and take a deep breath and think, ‘That little disturber, pain in the butt? He’s actually a pretty good guy.’ Those guys end up being the best teammates.

“And a guy like Bergeron, when you play against him, he’s just always in the tight spot, never makes a mistake. Those types of guys are guys you want on your team, guys you love to go to war with.â€

Backes also mentioned defensemen Zdeno Chara and Torey Krug and forwards David Krejci and David Pastrnak as draws. But more than personnel, it was the team-first approach espoused by Bergeron, Marchand, Sweeney and coach Claude Julien that hooked Backes.

Love the Marchand comments - Marchand showing he's a leader and where his heart is which is great to see. Backes has ran into a lot of support. Let's hope the couple here that dislike the signing don't run into him

WOW it wasn't the teams analytics guru who convinced him to come :sarcasm:

Just happy he is here and look forward to his 5 years as a Bruin

love that "I`m into winning games" quote, as a fan, I enjoy watching wins;)

Sounds like a cliché but anyone who's played sports know how poison guys of the more laissez faire attitude can be. Backes, aside from his skillset, really does seem like a good character guy to have around.

I honestly can't tell when you're serious and when you're being sardonic, but didn't Backes leaves STL for the same reason that Eriksson left Boston: the 'new' team was willing to go a year longer (at the same annual money) than the team that was left behind?

The addition of Backes gives the Bruins the best group of C in the league:

Bergeron
Krejci
Backes

wish we could say the same about the D which is, at this point, still a huge concern

Excited about the kids in the system on the way up but they are a year or more away
