Return to St. Louis is a ‘special night’ for David Backes
http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/b...avid-backes/HQkufrJXEnpxFBeKThKpyI/story.html

“I’ll try to control myself and my emotions,” said Backes, reflecting on what it would be like to play here for the first time without the Blue Note on the front of his sweater. “Try to live in the moment and enjoy it.

“There are a few times in your career when you get special nights, and tonight is going to be a special night for me, no question, coming back to I place a spent 10 years.

“A lot of great memories here . . . I just want to enjoy every second of it, be in the moment, not look past it and not take anything for granted.”

If Backes had played here his whole career, He would be a God. He was born to be a Bruin and Born to be on that mid to late 70s late 70s team. Perfect for them

Great signing.

I'm hoping he can produce like the top 6 forward he is for the first few years then settle in as a 3rd line center in his later years.

He's a bit overpaid, but thats UFA life. I'd rather give him this contract than have Jimmy Hayes playing with Krejci.

I really didn't call "him" pathetic,I called the fight pathetic,so they are both contributors.

He's tough and game but he doesn't have the best fighting technique although we know skates and ice a shield and uneven TOI reducing energy and oxygen make it hard on these guys

I don't know why anyone would fight someone wearing a shield

The majority of his fights stink, just not a guy that can send a message. Appreciate the effort.

I hope Backes fights Toews next Bruins/Hawks game
They've fought twice, and according to hockeyfights.com its a 1-1 split. Gotta decide it with a rubber match

Agree mostly - he fights if its defending a teammate or a good opponent but he's not full of rage. He does it as part of leadership job description but he's a clean player

You on the other hand 'in the day' would not have liked seeing Bergeron get hit from behind

Gotta say that the highlight package that St. L. put together for his tribute was pretty impressive.

Just wish we got to see him as a Bruin 6-7 years sooner.

Backes isn't bad for an American college boy who never played in a fighting league growing up. And by "not bad" I mean a guy who actually drops the gloves, because lately, the majority of American college hockey players won't. About the only other guy who does is Kesler, and he's even worse than Backes. ;)

Unlike the old days when Colgate fancy pants like Milbury were forced to fight simply because they were college boys.

I think a response was appropriate, but the response was less than a pillow fight so no message sent.

He beat Toews pretty good and then had 2 mini fights with him,one was a draw. His first Toews fight was probably the highlight and best of his fighting career.

Great signing.

Or even the 2011 team. I think after that they slowly regressed to a much softer team.

Been watching hockey for 43 years now... not sure if I saw 'winning' a fight make a difference in the game more than maybe a dozen times

But when a team gets bullied or doesn't stick up for each other... seen that cost a club the entire season.

Guys don't need to win fights in order to help the team... just answer the bell and don't get ragdolled

I know fight fans won't like what I'm saying but what backes did was exactly what winning hockey is all about... being part of the team

I wouldn't even call that a fight,it was a discussion followed by a dance, followed by a discussion. Doubt it had any influence on anything.
