Tied for 2nd in goals with Marchand. I don't think that you can ask much more from him. Certainly doing better than Loui was in his first season.

Ya mean the season that he was concussed after 8 games? He had 14 points in his first 21 Bruins games.

For 6 million a season? You can ask for a lot more at that price.

Anyway, I have been a huge Backes detractor from day 1, but I'll give him credit. The last two weeks he's finally looked like a second liner, and doing more than fighting little guys and starting scrums. Seems he's figured out the way he actually will help the team win is by parking himself in front of the net and tipping shots from the more talented offensive players, exactly his game. He's cut a lot of the ridiculous fighting scrapping every whistle out and its helping a lot. And he seems to have found some chemistry with Krejci finally.

Still a joke he got an A over Marchand and Krug though.

Eriksson had two concussions. Perhaps you've (conveniently) forgotten that.

Backes has still brought more to the table than Loui the loser.

And what has Backes won? We know that you've really had it in for Eriksson—I assume that it's because he's a "soft Euro" who doesn't fight—but I don't see Backes as the superior talent.

I tried to like Loui, I tried to buy into the Bergeron on the wing, great two way player, underrated stuff. I tried to give him a break after the injures but I could not stand his invisible, boring, ineffective play. Not all Euros are soft, Radko Gudas can come on in anytime he would like and I'll take a legit goal scoring european forward any day.

It's absolutely a playing style issue with me, for the same money and same production I will always take the player who plays with grit, hits, fights and plays mean over an Eriksson type.

The loser tag for Loui was more to encompass his lack of production, effort and grit while in Boston as opposed to post season wins, neither has been overly successful in the playoffs, but I would still rather go into a playoff series with Backes than Eriksson.

I love the guy but I'm extremely worried about how he's going to look at age 35, nevermind 38...

I hated Louii, but thus far, while Backes, I agree, is a player I'd rather have for the reasons you mention, can't say that I'm happy with him, either. They say he's a slow starter. Fine. We'll have to wait, I guess.

How can you hate Loui? He played fine when injury free. Too many people think about Seguin when his name comes up. He was a good player here. Having said that, I like what Backes brings but I am concerned about that 6mi average.

Disagree. He played fine once Claude finally moved him up to play with Krejci. Why it took 3 years is beyond me. Drove me nuts.

I think what I'm trying to say is "brings it every night" is nice and all, but doesn't help defeat all the parity in the NHL. Lots of guys on the other side of the ice want to "bring it" too. The difference is between guys who bring it and have hands/skating and guys who don't, the ones with hands/skating can contribute on the score sheet on the merits of their skills alone sometimes.

The Bruins have the deadly combo of inconsistent levels of determination, and mediocre skills. Pasta stands out glaringly in that he's got it all in the o-zone. Crazy compete, crazy skills. Ironically Sweeney would have never drafted Pasta in a million years. Not his kind of player.

Bottom line on Backes.

Since returning from the elbow injury, he has been a shadow of the player who I watched borderline dominate just 6-7 months ago in the playoffs.

Claude thinks Backes is another Horton or Iginla, but he's not a finisher. He's a RW Lucic being asked to be a Horton/Iggy.

Krejci says he likes playing with Backes, no doubt, he's not a threat to Krejci's cushy 2nd line C job when he's on his RW.

If David Krejci is a noted tough guy, Backes is a noted fake tough guy. Glad he slowed down on the after whistle stuff.

Hasn't been bad, but not what I expected away from the puck. I expected Atari aggressiveness and checking with more skill. Instead he has been turned into an x and o defensive system player. I expected him to change a game with a thunderous hit, but hardly see that.

It's tough to deny Loui is the better player but Backes is the more physical. Backes is a food fit but he clearly doesn't have the pure talent of Eriksson.

Backes is a C not a RW. Can he play RW, sure, but he has been ineffective playing with Krejci. In fact, that whole line about 30 games in has done squat. It's time to play Backes at C and if it's on the 3rd line it shouldn't matter. If Pittsburgh can have Crosby, Malkin, and Kessel on different lines, then I don't see why we question going with Bergeron, Krejci, and Backes down the middle. It will at least add some depth to the team with Backes on the 3rd line which will be better than the current 3rd line.
