There was an article or a tweet or something in the last few weeks that stated the Senators are one of the few remaining teams in the league that don't let their head coach make all the hiring decisions for his staff (per some team policy).
I want to say it was either Mendes or McGuire. I'll do some digging when I get a chance, because I thought it was a really interesting point. I'm not sure how much that hampers the chance of bringng in one of the big name guys, and it could very well be different under Dorion.
I bet a lot is going to change under Dorion in that regard.
I think Murray was a coach at heart, and even as the GM liked to have a hand in the coaching. That was a problem at the end of the day. I also think he scoffed at the idea of paying big dollars for a marquee coach, and instead was always on the lookout for the next Babcock.
I think that Dorion is smart enough to know that #1 he is not a coach, and will stay out of all things coaching. And #2, in order to get every dollar of worth out of every player on his budget strapped team, he is going to have pay for a good, proven coach. As a rookie GM, he needs one imo.
Nothing will send a louder message to the fans and everyone else that Senators want to be competitive than opening up the wallet for a big name coach, like Mr Julien
