Friedman: Darnell Nurse requests a trade

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.

The only thing we know is that Nurse has 4 or 5 teams he'll waive for and 2 of them are Pittsburgh and Philly. It's also possible LA is one of those teams, I've read some say he'd go there while others say he only wants to go to the East.

Not the craziest thing I’ve seen on here. But I’d want to see at least 25 percent retention on Nurse. And honestly, I don’t readily see how objectively this makes the team any better as Risto was decent. At least Nurse stays healthy? But who knows.

You *might* get $2 Million in retention, but honestly the Oilers appetite for doing that is pretty small.

Before you get too excited over that comment, just a few weeks ago it was the prevailing "wisdom" of these boards that Nurse would have to have retention, a pick and take a bad contract back just to move him.

Reality is settling in. The Oilers want the cap space. Nurse is a good player but overpaid. The UFA market is weak. Players are going for astronomical returns. To me things are trending towards Darnell Nurse going for a reasonable amount in trade.

Not crazy. Reasonable. Doesn't hurt either team, with the acquiring team not giving up a ton but the Oilers aren't fleeced in the end either.

What about Nurse at full cap for Nick Seeler and/or Garnett Hathaway?

Seeler is my choice because the Oil need a bottom pairing LHD once Nurse is gone and he can fill that role well enough.

It also frees up the most cap space with the least long term commitment. Maybe in the real world Philly throws us back a pick too since GMs are in their silly season, but I would do it without that and be happy.

If the Oilers are taking back $5.1 Million in cap, I'd push for Cam York, not Seeler.

Sounds crazy a few days ago. Today? Look at the trades that are happening. This year's UFA class stinks.

Don't get too greedy either though. Not having to pay to get rid of him is a blessing.

Serious question: Don't you think it would have benefited Pittsburgh to make a deal for Nurse prior to this weeks, uh, *interesting* moves?

I think his value in trade has gone up. Not Bowen Byram territory but geeez,.

The move that makes sense with Philly/Nurse is selling Ristolainen somewhere else and bringing in Nurse to replace him. Sanheim can play both sides I believe, so they'd just slide Sanheim to RD to make the pairs work. I'm not sure exactly what pairs Philly would use, but I'd probably argue that:

York-Sanheim
Nurse-Drysdale

Makes the most sense. Acquiring a 1st+ for Ristolainen then getting Nurse for Seeler and a 2nd would be a nice set of moves by Philly.

Nurse for Seeler and a 2nd is terrible for Philly

Look at the prices in the market right now. That's about what a trade is going to end up being.

A decent bottom pair DFD and a future year's 2nd for Nurse is probably about what he's bringing back at this point. Then they'll make up for it by selling Ristolainen in this insane market and get way overpaid for him most likely.

They only will move Risto if it’s a massive overpayment.

Seeler probably blocks a trade to Edmonton.
