Player Discussion: Dante Fabbro

He's a pending UFA and we're about 20 games away from TDL.

If we want him extended, what would be the highest acceptable AAV and term in your opinion?

Five years, $3.35m per?

He's a great fit here, a better fit than that cap hit, I understand that. But I'm sure he understands that too. He's not getting more elsewhere.

That term and AAV could be realistic, at least if we compare it to other RDs with somewhat similar stat lines and profiles. Last summer:

- 28-year old Chatfield signed a 3 years $3M per deal after scoring 20+ points once in previous years
- 25-year old Liljegren got 2x$3M after two 20+ pt seasons
- 30-yo Walker got 5x$3.6M after two 20+ pt seasons
- 31-yo Demelo got 4x$4.9M after three 20+ pt and one 30+ pt seasons
- 29-yo Roy got 5x$5.75M after three 20+ pt seasons
- 30-yo Lyubushkin got 3x$3.25M after zero 20+ pt seasons (but he's more of a strong defensive D type than two-way or offensive)

Fabbro has reached 20 point mark only once in his career (scored 3-21-24 in 2021/22), but is on pace to score 21 this year. I think due to his relatively young age (26) and role on the team he can get a bit more than $3.35M per if he wants, even on a longer deal.

I like the player but probably not for more than 2 or 3 years if he's demanding $4M+ per season.

"I've made it known to him (agent) that staying here in Columbus is my #1 priority..."

Definitely does not sound like he wants to test free agency and move closer to BC.
The thing is (for me) I never really doubted that Fabbro wanted to stay. All of my doubt lies with Waddell and the organization.

I hope we keep him. He’s a higher priority than Provorov IMO.

Even if he’s not a top pair defenseman by nature, he’s good enough to be able to keep up. If we have higher ambitions on a partner for Werenski, that’s fine, but Fabbro can slot in on the second pairing long term with Mateychuk and be just fine.

Fabbro on the 2nd pair would mean we have one hell of a top 4 and that would re-shape the defense. By this I'm implying that we have a higher end option to play with Werenski. I also hope that add on the left side to push Mateychuk to earn top 4 or to allow him to even play on the bottom pair if needed. That would also signal a massive change to the defense group.

Personally, I think this change is a two year plan as I don't see them moving Guddy with only one year left. I do get a strong feeling that they will try to move on from Severson. The cap opening up could be an option with some retention to allow him to fit another scheme better. I still think he makes more good plays than bad, however, the bad is so magnified and horrific it's hard to keep that in the lineup. That's my opinion anyway. Not that he sucks, that his bad plays so outweigh the good it's a killer.

Fabbro belongs next to Werenski, he's an excellent complementary top pair guy. That pairing works perfectly, it's the next pairing that needs a major upgrade.*

And yes he should be a higher priority than Provorov.

Wads had a history in Carolina of taking his signings down to the day of unrestricted free agency. He really banked on guys liking playing there. I would have to assume that is what is going on here? Anyways I don't like it.

* Having a true top pair RD would also be great, but it's not cost efficient to trade for one when you already have an excellent top pair, which we do. And even if we did add, say, Colton Parayko, there's no guarantees that he clicks better with Werenski than Fabbro does.

Having 2 pairs that can give you a reliable 20 minutes or more a night would be nice too. Would be cool to have someone of a higher caliber with Mateychuk

And if we can land a top pair caliber RD to play with Mateychuk, that would be fantastic.

The good part about Fabbro is you know he works with Zach, even if it's not a traditional big-time, big-minutes pairing. What it means is you can add a prototype big-body, all-zones top 4 defender and have him round out your top 4 and let them sort t pairs out with their play.

Easy...we have no idea what the hold up is. Is he asking for more term or money than DW wants to give? Did they agree to let him shop around when the UFA market opens and then talk after that? Does DW have a bigger fish in mind? This could be unfolding in several different directions.

Don't have time for patience. Only time for stress and demands.

the hold-up is that the season is still going on and most players don't want to negotiate in-season.

if the season ends tonight/tomorrow, they'll have 2.5 months to hammer out a deal before his current deal expires. waddell is good at this. i'd be surprised if they don't get it done.
