Uh oh looks like pens are out on Cleary. Don't know how to copy it here on my phone but there is a teeth on the Pens Fa thread.

He's a great lockerroom guy, one of the better in the league.

I agree and Cleary use to be one my favorite players but he is so far removed from what he once was. Last season, when he left that locker room... he was a turnover making, check whiffing mess

BTW kudos to injuredchoker for post of the year.... that GIF is friggin hilarious and so true if Babcocks BFFL is brought back

or vice versa. Do the Penguins just not know?

it's either mass hysteria or we've all underestimated the scope of his blackmail material

I think he's a very good mid-level player that can be used in several situations. Plus the sandpaper/grit, veteran experience, a ton of playoff experience. He's not a big body though, but he was used as one. I think that's where all the wear and tear comes from.

He would've been selling cars in Edmonton had he not played the type of game he did to earn a spot on the Wings in '05.

How much is Cleary worth on Detroit, how many years and in what line/situation?

I say $2m, 2/3 years, 3rd line/holmstrom role.

And I was super critical of his play early in the season, but I think his value comes in the playoffs.

If you can't get him for that, then yes, he should be let go. But he's can still be a contributor to this team.

Umm...well, obviously Cleary isn't signed, but Helm and Abby are almost certainly going to be on the 3rd line.

Are you implying that we signed Weiss for $5m to be our 3rd line center? Or that Andersson has leaped Helm in our depth chart?

you mentioned 3 players saying the Wings have too many players. Tootoo, Emmerton, and Sammy, right? None of those 3 were tabbed to play on the 3rd line. I'm not implying anything.

Oh, I completely misunderstood you then. I'm saying you dump those 3 off the team to make room for a Cleary (or Morrow).

His situation may be that he's not a good fit for the Wings at this point either, kind of like Filppula. He was struggling mightily too, not sure if it was injuries, or just getting moved all over the roster all the time, the transition the team is making-- could be myriad factors.

That said-- just like coaches get stale, maybe he's stale here? He still has value, and I think it's in the $2.5-3 MM x 2 yrs min, possibly 3 (say lower $$, and more years, or 2 yrs at $3-ish MM plus).

I think Cleary should take $2.5M x 2 years with a team like Pittsburgh. Still a good price for him, and he should succeed playing with one of Sid or Geno.

FYI. Pens beat writer Dave Molinari (generally reliable) says that Cleary is not on the Penguins list of targets.

By not playing the same big body game he had to play here? :dunno:

Oh ok, well at least he still has his stone hands, crappy hockey IQ and turnover production to offer a team that doesn't need him for his physical play.

EDIT: Forgot about his sub-par defensive game. His new team will love that too.

Exactly. The years of Cleary scoring 20 goals with Robert Lang as his center are long gone.

so he'll be a specialist...at what, exactly? He's not a goal scorer anymore, and if he isn't grinding (which is apparently the value seen for him on the Wings), then he's just the last guy into the defensive zone each time.

I'd only sign Cleary for 1 year at like 1.5 million.

Holland wanted him and offered him God knows what and Cleary decided to test the market.

Now if he comes crawling back to Holland, Holland better play hard ball with him after pulling a stunt like that.

Why argue with me? Apparently there's a bit of a bidding war going on among several NHL teams, including Detroit at around 3 yrs x $3 MM.

That apparently is his market value.

Peak year wasn't with Lang, iirc. I thought it was 2008.
