I didn’t hear him cry in media when he was with the Avs

Meanwhile he was putting up another season pacing for over 100 points, plenty of players would be sulking but he was business as usual on ice

Avs fans just were convinced and can’t get it out of their minds that he was determined to get 14M

& now even after Carolina and their media being …sholes I haven’t seen Rantanen say anything to media about it. But sure lets say he was acting out

From a Canes perspective, I think Rod is a little peeved about the whole thing. With most media, he will be pretty polite and give the player the benefit of the doubt. As an example, if a player like Aho has a terrible game, he will never blame Aho to the media. He will always defend the player in media scrums. I do think the Adam Gold interview he laid into it a little more. I'm sure Rod is a little angry internally at what happened. Nevertheless, he still defends Rantanen's actions and just says the whole thing is unfortunate. His insights on the Guentzel contract are honestly more interesting. He made it clear that we should have offered $8Mx8 from day one and that he thinks Guentzel would have signed. Oh well.

I think the Stankoven deal was the best the team could possibly get. I'm sure the Canes loved his potential. He just turned 22 and he could feasibly be a top line player. In March 2024 there's no way we could have traded Necas for Stank one for one. But he hasn't been as good in 24-25 so we were able to buy low. It's possible he is never a top line player, but at the least he will fit our system well and play hard.

This year was always going to be a re-tooling year from Carolina’s perspective. They made their push with their first group last year, because they knew the contracts of long-time Canes (like Pesce, Skjei, and Teravanien) would be ending this past offseason and they couldn’t keep everyone. Then guys like Burns and Orlov have their contract ending this year. So the expectations this year was only to make the playoffs as the 3rd division/bubble team, and then hope for the best once the playoffs begin. Next year, they’ll have long-time highly touted prospect Nikishin coming over, as well as guys like Morrow and possibly Nadeau to help begin the next “wave” of a Cup push.

Which is why deciding to make the trade for Rantanen this year was a weird decision, but considering they were apparently working off false information (that he would have no issue re-signing), it makes more sense.

If you trade for Mikko Rantanen you are not seeing this year as a "re-tooling". And i didnt hear that from Tulsky and Rod either. They were ready to go this year.

Unfortunately it didnt work out the way they planed and in the end the fact that Rantanen didnt want to sign there and the Dallas-trade kinda killed their TDL. But they still got back a pretty good haul in the end that will help them this summer. And i am sure Carolina will be loading up for next season.....

And this is still a damn good and deep team that can go all the way this year. They maybe arent the favorite in the east, but still.

As i said, there are many stories out there whom to blame in the end.

The reason they went for Rantanen was because they were told they had a shot at signing him. If they wanted to "go for it" this year, they would have kept him as a rental.

I could present posts in this past off-season/October talking about how this is a retooling year for Carolina, but I feel like that'd be an effort in futility.

Dallas has a really good club, and adding Rantanen while only giving up Stankoven (from their roster) made them even stronger. But can they beat the Avs? Dallas could very well be out in round one.

Dallas has had no problem beating the Avs in the playoffs the last few years, going 3-0 against them in a series.

Playing the Avs is not an area of concern right now for the Stars, especially since this is the best team the Stars have iced (when fully healthy) in quite sometime.

The question you’re asking should be reversed.

I think it was Lebrun that reported the Avs offered $11.65M x 8. So a credibly close offer that could've went up with more negotiation.

Dallas is also a better team on paper at every position except 1C and 1D (and the 1D gap is a lot closer than Avs' fans want you to think). Maybe they have a slight advantage with some depth defensemen, too.

The Avs scare me a lot less than Vegas, Tampa, and Florida all do. I'd probably rather face Colorado than Winnipeg and Washington, too.

They're a contender, sure, but one of the weaker ones relative to the field this year.

Avs added a lot at the TDL and by getting Nescas and Drury earlier.

Not saying they didn’t. Avs are still a strong team, but to your point, Dallas also added early with Grandlund and Ceci. Not to mention, they’re already a deeper team to begin with.

I’d be surprised if anyone is claiming the Avs to be the favourite in that series.

Injuries matter a lot too. Heiskanen might not be fully healthy, while Avs lost both Toews and Nichushkin last playoffs.
 
Carolina saved themselves in assets.

Thing is if I was the players / team.

Stankoven + Hall makes a team weaker than Necas and Drury.

A little surprised they didn't use those firsts for a player.

It seems they were trying to be cheap with Brock Boeser and Vancouver told em off.
 
People trying to draw a straight line from Stankoven/picks to Necas are making a false equivalence. There's a difference between the certainty of having a player under contract for 8+ years vs 1+.

Everybody is saying they never should have had to make the deal because they never should have acquired Rantanen to begin with, especially giving up what they gave up, considering they had to have known that he wasn't going to sign.
 
I don't think anyone has issues with the return Carolina got but you don't come out saying you're all in after acquiring Rantanen then flip him for mostly futures. You look like ****ing idiots.

I think Carolina would be more open to to keeping him as a pure rental if he wasn't so dog**** while he was there.

He literally told Carolina he would be interested in signing there. How was Carolina supposed to know they believed the question was a negotiation tactic by Colorado?
