As for Raantanan not being very impressive in Carolina, I think there are several factors to that.

There was probably legitimate shock early on. Even if he didn't intend to sign with Colorado this summer, he probably figured they'd keep him for a Cup run. Then when he got there it sounds like Carolina was doing everything but the ol' Russian Super League chained to a radiator at 3 am negotiations the whole time. Brindamour's system also doesn't seem to lend itself to skilled players, either. Then they decided they were trading him again and he potentially had to negotiate with several other teams. Now that he can just focus on playing hockey again, I think Dallas is going to crush here. They draft so well that they can afford to move substantial futures and still have plenty coming.

Could be. Could be.

Stank is a damn fine player and may well make this a solid deal for Carolina in the long-run. This is still a gigantic ooph to Carolina in the short-term, especially a year removed from failing to re-sign Guentzel.

As smart as I think Carolina's management is...ownership is going to drive away as many players as they can attract with this mindset and it burned them this time, as it was inevitably going to do eventually. Learning when to just not say something to the media is something Dundon needs to learn.

Given the circumstances I don't think Carolina did all that poorly here...it's just that they effectively punted a season while in the midst of their window because of their inability to sign Rantanen. The way Dundon talks wouldn't make me eager to re-sign either. These players are just commodities to be bought and sold...I feel like there shouldn't be any level of surprise when such a mindset results in players saying nope, even if it's the harsh truth.

Every owner realistically views their players that way, most are just usually smart enough to speak in bullshit code rather than gloat to the media like they've cracked the code.

This was a tough situation for Carolina and this return is hugely preferable to losing Rantanen the way they lost Guentzel...but it feels firmly avoidable if Carolina had a less cutthroat owner. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Owners who write off the human factor are bound to accumulate failures.

It feels like the current Canes ownership is trying to be like Vegas but that only works in Vegas.

After taxes Rantanen is the highest paid player in the league now.

I still wouldn't have done this if I was Dallas.

That contract is like 12.5x8 in Colorado..

Rantanen said he was ready to leave money on the table to stay in Colorado and money wasn’t everything, a fit was

Rantanen better f*cking produce now. And for a while.

You don’t think he was worth 12?

This should actually help Rantanen. All year we heard how he wants Drai money and will be paid 13.5-14M per season

Now at 12M he already is being paid less than his market value and in the next 12-24 months he’ll be taking millions less than multiple players, his comps. Taking pressure away from him because he’s not the highest paid player in the league nor not among them

He's worth it, especially considering in UFA he'd broken that easily.

However, obviously it doesn't come without risk for Dallas.

Carolina did

This is their win now window and they definitely aren’t closer to winning now than 6 weeks ago

They are miles away
Yes, but cant blame them for trying with Rantanen, it just didnt work out but now they have assets to get a big name for next season and Stankoven as he is no Rantanen, he is still a very good player and has a great future.

Maybe Rants produces in Dallas, but he was trash in Carolina. Slow and disinterested. Maybe he didn't want to be in Carolina, or was shocked by the trade, but, it is a reflection of the person. He is paid a kings ransom to play a kids game. There is no place for whining and sulking.
The idea that Rod's system doesn't lend itself to star players is dumb. The best of the best play a 200 foot game, which is what Rod wants. Don't turn the puck over at the blue line trying to be a hero...sounds awful. Back check...how dare he!

I'm still a bit disappointed that Colorado didn't re-sign Rantanen after everything he did for the franchise. I think it's ages since a home-grown superstar player was last traded against his will in the league and a $96M deal always seemed the most logical for Rantanen. Somehow Avs front office just didn't value him that high as sources indicate that their last concrete offer was $11.25M and max limit for a new deal closer to $11.5M than $12M. Undoubtedly the negotiations were tough, but ultimately they would have probably ended with the same deal if they had wanted to.

With that being said, I'm surprised how well this turned out for all parties concerned. I believe Dallas is a great fit for Rantanen. Carolina ultimately got a young potential star player and great picks for a player they had wanted to offload for years. And Colorado got a great player and finally addressed their depth issues properly this deadline after wasting a few years riding MacK and Rants playing half of each game. So all is well at least until they have to re-sign Necas in Denver. If I remember correctly, his camp is no easier than Rantanen's when it comes to negotiations, and there are no guarantees that he's willing to give similar discounts as Rantanen was.

Blame his agent.

They weren’t there before either. They moved Necas for a total package much higher than they would have gotten for him originally.

After this summer, they’ll have a ton of cap space as well. I think they did real well considering the circumstances. They’re not going to beat a team like Florida, Colorado or Dallas and wouldn’t have at any point.

I get what you’re saying but you can’t just build an elite team out of a middle of the road playoff team at one trade deadline.

Basically zero contracts come without a risk

The good start for Dallas though is that Rantanen left money on the table and the cap is going up by 30M in the next 3 years so when it comes to these bigger contracts it’s a value deal from the monent they signed it

Their fault was trading straight up for Rantanen without having any contract talks prior

They just believed they could convince him to sign, not the best moment for Carolina to play slumping hockey

I understand they weren’t a true Cup favourite 6 weeks ago, which is amazing to consider Vegas had them there

But this is a hard sell now

They need a 2C, replace Burns& a difference maker on offense, figure out the net. While Slavin is already 30+

Because Colorado did not allow it.
They rather blindsided Rantanen with the trade. Vegas vibes for sure.
