Two LH defenseman who play big minutes on their teams top pairing. Both having great season so far. I'm curious to see what the consensus is on HF considering these two will be battling it out in the best players in the NHL poll.

Who is the better player?

Toews is light-years ahead of Hughes.

Toews hasn't had a SINGLE minus game this season, and leads the league in +/-

He's 3rd in points per game behind Makar and Hedman.

If he didn't miss 10 games due to an off-season surgery, he would be top 5 in the league in every category right now.

If you want to know how good Toews really is, go to the Isles forum and look him up BEFORE he was given away for picks.

I don’t think it’s unfair to say that Toews is currently better, especially defensively. If my team is competing for the cup today I take Toews. If my team is rebuilding, I take Hughes and gamble on his sky-high potential.

Hughes. Not that close.
The Avalanche have a great D group but I think it’s become overrated, outside of Makar.
They are an elite group offensively but give up a ton of goals defensively. I know some of it is goaltending but that’s not the whole story.

Hughes still living rent free in Avs fans heads

Must be doing something right. he elicits more comments in threads from avs fans than another fan base.
I mean if you have an argument for Hughes I’d love to hear it rather than post pointless comments.

Thread summary:
Avs fan: Toews has better advanced stats and actual production and this is without PP1 time.

Canucks fans: Lol clearly Hughes

Toews is the best defensive defenseman on the team, Avs out score the other team 34-12 when he’s on the ice.

Everyone thinks slow, big defensive defenseman = good defense because they block lots of shots. No **** you’re blocking a lot of shots because they’re trapped in their own end all game. Best defense is playing in the other end, one pass and you’re out of the zone.
Definitely. Agile puck moving defencemen that can exit the zone, are the future of the game.

Weird. They’ve given up the 10th most goals per game in the entire NHL at 3.03 goals per game Just two spots ahead of the Oilers. Canucks are 21st in goals against per game with a dreadful D group outside of Hughes at 2.5 goals per game.
Like I said the Avalanche D is elite offensively. Defensively as a group they are definitely not elite.

The team has given up the 10th most goals per game in the NHL. Obviously they could improve on that a lot.
Best defense is playing in the other end and defending well in your own end.

It's because our goaltending has been bottom 3 in the league. Our defence is fantastic.
