Buddy of mine works in the league and has ice time data. He says Mrtka had over 28 minutes against Victoria and has led the Thunderbirds in ice time every game since day 1 – except for that last one against Kamloops, where Mrtka got 26 minutes but Mynio had 28+.

Mynio was hurt and returned for the Kamloops game so that checks out.

This start is very encouraging. Should keep him in round 1 for sure. High minutes and lots of offence. Showing more offence than I expected to be honest. Need him and a handful of other Czech D to make the show so we don't suck anymore.lol

Jiricek, Jiricek, Svozil, Badinka, Dvorak, Hamara, Alscher... all top 100 picks. Then add in Mrtka who is very likely a first rounder at this point. And Spacek who is a late bloomer (maybe). Some of these guys have to make the show, right?

Size… and… size
Yeah, but is that enough to make him a Top-15 pick? I mean... I would probably have him in that range in a mock draft and would certainly be tempted to draft him there due to his very high value / rarity (6'6" RHD), but in a ranking... I don't know.

Yes, he has shown (a lot) more offence than most of the other >=6'5" guys (at least more than Amico, Rombach, Vilchinsky, Fagerblom, Kaiser, Kettles, Bondar, etc), but is it all translatable to the NHL or he's just going to become a 3rd pair mobile stay-at-home dman?

I'm not saying he is going to be a bust or anything, I have him at the end of my first round and I believe he has one of the nicest floors of the draft. I just don't see the high-end mobility and offensive game some have seen. In the games I've watched, he was shaky with the puck, was bad against the opposing pressure, and did not use his big frame that much... and that's kind of what makes me doubt he can be a top-pairing guy in the NHL. But that can change.

Wang and Bedkowski have shown a lot more potential offensively imo, and they are better skaters and way more physical.

RHD and offence to go with size and size.
I agree that being an RHD will increase his value on Draft Day, I'd be surprised if he slips outside the Top-20 tbh. But does he have that much offence though? I loved him at the Hlinka, but not much afterwards. I've seen some clips where he looked brilliant, but I did not see any of that in my viewings so far... I'll continue to watch him. Like I said, I may simply have watched the wrong games and I'll be more than happy to change my opinion on him 😊

Still, I have him at the end of my first round, it's not like I hate the guy, I just don't see him as a Top-15 talent right now. Same with Fiddler and Hensler.

I have him around 15 to 20 personally. This is cherry picking due to small sample size

That is the .ppg average for U18 D in the WHL.

He's obviously only played 7 games so that may be a unfair metric. 2 things could happen.

1. he gets a hattrick next game and is .ppg
2. he doesn't do jack shit this weekend and drops out of top 10

Too early to tell. I'd say he's getting aclimitized.

If we are taking potential NHL offense.. he's not Makar/Hughes/Bouch for that. I'm guessing a 50 to 60 point type D IF it all goes well.

But he is not the Next Chara or Makar... yet.lol

Yeah he has 5 points in 7 games in the WHL but... he only got points in 2 of these 7 games, and did not get any scoring chance in the other 5 games (according to InStat). And let's not forget he only had 4 points in 10 games in Czechia U20, 11th in PPG for U18 D's.

Against Wennatchee, both points were nice and resulted from a good shot by him. We'll give him that.

But against Kamloops, his A1 and A2 were just regular passes with no real playmaking or creativity, he just happened to have touched the puck at the blue line before a goal. And his goal was a butterfly shot from the blueline. I just watched the whole game and he was having issues defensively, was not physical by any mean, had issues controling the puck, and his skating looked choppy in straight line.

So yeah, he's getting points, but 50 to 60 points in the NHL seems like a stretch to me. I hope I'm wrong, because it'd be super exciting to see a giant like that become that productive, but I have more questions than answers at the moment. And I've had these questions since September, and I still can't get the answers...

Again, I think he is a future NHLer and should have a very long career, and he's a first rounder. He has very interesting tools and everybody wants a 6'6" mobile RHD. I just personally don't see (yet) the upside to become a 1st-pairing guy or a PP quarterback, and there are legitimate red flags about his defensive game as well imho. I personnally don't think his hockey sense and his skating are as good as what I've read everywhere. I unfortunately don't see the Mrtka I loved so much during the Hlinka...

You may be right. I'm not even sure he'll be an NHL dman at this point as Czechs really stall at 18 and 19.

I'm not sure he'll ever be a top pair dman or PP quarterback.. using Czechs (low ass bar).. I prefer Svozils, Spaceks and both Jiricek's offensive looks better.

Funny about Hlinka.. I thought he was okay until the final against Canada. He was brilliant there and I kept thinking where the hell has this been.

Sounds like he may have consistency issues to be honest. I'm a big fan but I have a massive bias for Czech players and I regret nothing.lol Hopefully a WHL watcher has more input for you!

This guy is going to be a top 10 pick. He possesses phenomenal mobility for a guy that big. Based on the last several drafts, there is no way a player like this is going to still be on the board midway through the first round.

I like what I’ve seen from him. He looks confident and competent under pressure, he’s able to get the puck up the ice, he plays major minutes for Seattle in all situations, and he has so much more room to grow into his frame. I don’t think he’ll be a top pair, but he looks like a second pair D to me.

Mrtka is going to play. I think Jiricek certainly had more maturity in his game, but none of these players had the size and mobility Mrtka possesses. He’s getting more and more confident every game in the WHL and it’s not like Seattle is an offensive powerhouse.

That's what makes scouting so chaotic: we see two different players 😅 And it's not to have an argument or try to prove anything, I just find interesting to compare our observations that clearly don't go in the same direction. In the 7 full games I've watched and tracked of Mrtka, he was struggling under pressure and panicked a lot with the puck. I recognize he has a decent mobility, but I've never seen a "phenomenal" one with him. I like his four-way mobility, but he does not seem as fluid as Silayev or Simashev overall. His strides are short and choppy. His balance, pivots and backward skating were also an issue in some of my viewings. There were some "high-end" flashes, but the red flags were more frequent in the games I've watched.

If Mrtka has a phenomenal mobility, how would rate other big-bodied mobile D's such as Fiddler, Wang and Bedkowski? I'm just curious, because to me they are better skaters than Mrtka 🙂

And, once again, I think he's going to get drafted early, I think we all agree on this.
