Hes having quite the season, I cant believe he was undrafted. I think I read that Pronman had him ranked in the top 40 of his draft actually.

I wonder if he has a shot at team Canada actually

Oh man if HC leaves Hicketts off at east the invite list then that's proof that they really don't know what they're doing.

Happy to see him on the SS roster along with a bunch of 1st and 2nd rounders on defense. Looks like Detroit might've recouped the value of the 2nd rounder they gave up in that horrible, horrible Jarnkrok trade.

I have no doubt Hicketts and Bertuzzi will be invited to Team Canadas tryout camp, but as of now i think they are on the outside looking in. But i do feel a great camp by Hicketts will get him a spot on the team, Canada brass already know what this kid is all about

2 more assists tonight for Hicketts. I know its way too early to say hes a great pick up or anything but its weird to see a guy go undrafted and tear up at camp and the start of the season right after.

He keeps up this pace HC will have to take him

He did play well at the U18s when he was there, really well. This guy will continue to be overlooked because of his height (not size, height) and he'll continue to prove people wrong.

how many 5"8< tall defenseman are in the NHL in the last 5 years? didn't help he missed half the games last year due to injury.

Not a lot and I'm sure thats why he went undrafted but hes looking pretty good right now anyways. At least hes already 185, the guy must be extremely strong/stocky

Historically, I can understand the undrafted status. Don't agree with it as he was 64th in DraftBuzz final ranking. One of 15 DraftBuzz breakout candidates.

His scouting report from the draft guide:

Tiny stalwart plays like he has 6 more inches on him than he really does. Lost a good part of the season due to shoulder injury. True heart and soul, very high IQ stabilizing force. Possesses good overall skating that is a bit awkward with a goofy upwards leg drive when accelerating. Great puck mover. Reportedly a hefty 180-190 so could get even better when he conditions that extra weight.

^^ Given his build and the fact that the beard's coming in i highly doubt he tops 5'9-5'10 absolute maximum

I highly doubt he tops 5'8". This kids dad is apparently 5'7" too.

Joe is very unlikely to grow any further, but I'm sure happy he got signed and is getting all the recognition he rightfully deserves.

30 teams "whiffed" on Hicketts at the 2014 NHL Draft.

My feature on Joe and the past 12 months of his hockey career is coming up at HF this week.

It's been a crazy hockey road map for a heckuva a good kid!

if any organization will bring him along properly and give him the best chance at an NHL career, it's detroit. I think they know what they got in him and will do their due diligence in fostering his development.

He handled himself well against bigger, older NHL prospects, well enough to earn a contract anyway. Small, puck-moving defensemen can get by in today's NHL. Very curious to follow his development over the coming years.

Apparently what sealed the deal for the Wings was his play in regular camp. He looked great even against pros.

I've seen this kid for a few years now, and I watched him live two years ago (year before his draft) against the best line in the CHL (I think Portland's line was better than Halifax's) and he absolutely shut that line down. Posted about it in this thread, not only can he make plays offensively he's a very good positional defender who can can control the gap very well.

Petan, Leipsic, and Rattie couldn't get anything done on him that night. I was shocked nobody tossed a 7th rounder at this kid.

If he keeps up his current pace does anyone think he has a shot at CHL d-man of the year? I know its early but he's scoring at about Sprouls rate during his final year in the OHL.

He probably has a shot. I mean, if he keeps it up he's probably getting 80 points.

At his current pace hes looking more at something like 100 points. I dont think he'll keep this tear up but 80 points sounds pretty reasonable to me. Hes still got next year to go for CHL dman of the year too and the junior team
