admittedly I know very little about him, this thread reads a lot like Cale Makar's - huge ceiling, concerns over size and defense. Does anyone see it as strange that Makar is ranked ahead of Brannstrom given that Makar plays in a second tier junior league and Brannstrom plays against men?

There really is not a reason to be concerned about his defense. He's much better defensively than Makar.

Yeah, and I was told Jake Bean was supposed to be so great last year. I said he couldn't defend, no one wanted to believe it. How's that looking now?

I want the Maple Leafs to draft Brannstrom but it's impossible to say he's better defensively than Makar or vice versa.

Neither of us have seen them play on the same ice surface or at the same level.

How many games have you seen of each player to be in a position to laugh at an opinion?

The u18s and the u19 WJAC. Makar breaks up cycles and starts the transition just as well as Brannstrom does. His defensive zone positioning is strong as well. He also has a very active stick when defending on rushes.

Unlike Aho though (who I still think clearly deserved to be drafted), Brannstrom is one of the best U18 SHL defenseman in history. And he's still 17.

I'd rather gamble on whether someone's extremely dynamic skillset will "translate" to the NHL than guys with clearly lower upside. And players who can cut it in a men's league at age 17 are usually much more likely to make it to the NHL anyway.

I'd also take a gamble on a player with an extremely dynamic skillset. I just don't think Brännström is that guy. He's a good player, maybe the most important defenseman on the Swedish WJC team next year but I don't like his upside as an NHL player at all. Does he have any elite tools that will stand out among NHL players? I don't think so, and that would be a problem for a 5'9 defenseman. I would love to see him prove me wrong though.

To be fair though, the WJC-18 and Hlinka are 2 more stronger, skillful and competive tournaments than the WJAC-19. That's obviously the biggest problem with Makar, all the leagues and tournaments hes played in are awful compared to his peers.
Curious, Why didn't Makar play in the WJC-18 last year?

One of the youngest players in the draft, he crushed the J20's last year and he's holding his own vs men this season (young 17 year old!).

He's severely underrated, don't really understand why 1 cm of difference in height can make Makar a top 10 prospect and Brannstrom a 20+ prospect.

Makar's team was still competing then.

Btw, having seen the WJAC, the U18s, and the Hlinka live on several occasions each, I would argue that the WJAC is on average played at a slightly higher level of quality and competition than the other two.

I tend to agree. I wouldn't be unhappy if the Jets take him at #13, though I think that is unlikely.

I feel like he is going to fall into the 2nd round, I feel like he is the type of player who will be high on most teams list, but simply not the top guy they are targeting.

I'd love for Chevy to take a chance on Brannstrom @ 13, but Foote just screams the type of player they like. Whoever gets him will be laughing in a redraft thread a few years down the road.

Brannstrom has a pretty decent shot at being the best defenseman in this draft. Teams who pass over him will be kicking themselves.

This kid has shredded SuperElit and been one of the best U18 SHL defenseman of all time. And did it as one of the youngest players in this draft.

I kind of hope to see him fall until spot 25 for the Habs to pick him.

Montreal would then have 3 solid D prospects that could make this team a Cup contender in 7 years.
