Ugh, Hopefully Makar tells them to f*** off and to let him celebrate properly with UMASS (if they win i would assume that being Cale Makar on campus next week might just be the most fun he potentially could ever have for the rest of his life) and then win Gold at the WC for Team Canada afterwards.
Its insane IMO to burn an expansion draft protection slot (and a year of his ELC) only to throw him into the deepend right after winning or losing what is probably the biggest game of his career so far with exactly 0 time to adjust or process what just happened. Only to join a team that probably will be a fairly easy out in the 1st round regardless of whether he plays or not.

Thats so damn stupid.

It’s as much about keeping your best prospect happy. Do you think Cale Makar wants to save the Avs a year of his ELC? I certainly don’t think he would, he also is an immediate upgrade on the blue line for the team. His next contract should be cheaper as well in theory, since he won’t have 3 full seasons to make his case on.

I think Cale Makar would understand that throwing him in cold after he just comes off of an emotionally draining championship weekend with 0 time to adjust or prepare is not good for anybody.
Add the expansion draft angle and he would understand. Especially given that as you said at the end of the day it will only result in a bigger next contract for him anyways and give him a shot to properly close out his college experience and to add a WC gold medal to his collection.

I mean I really like him but IMO anyone that believes that he will just come in cold without knowing anyone or the system and without ever having faced close to the level of competition that he will face in the NHL playoffs and put the Avs over the top is nuts IMO.

He needed time to properly adjust to the college level. I expect he will need the same for the pro level. Odds are that he (if getting thrown in completely cold after championship weekend) will not have a net positive impact on the Avs. Atleast not a significantly enough one to accept all the downsides to this decision.

Him going from Hobey Baker to WC to training camp is IMO the correct path for his development and the best way to adjust to the next level. I don't think him getting thrown into a one-sided playof series without any time to adjust will go well. In fact I think it will potentially go very badly. Makar is an amazing prospect. But he has never faced even close to that level of competition as well as 0 chemistry with his new teammates he has never played with and I fully expect Calgary to exploit that heavily in the playoffs.
I do not see any positives for his development or the Avs to this decision.

Its just a combination of a player potentially wanting to cash in sooner and an organisation that is probably among the worst in the league when it comes to being patient and developing players properly.
Add the expansion draft angle and I really dislike it.

Oh well I’m excited to see him. I’m sure he’s excited to play in both the NCAA championship and Stanley Cup playoffs in a single week. You said it, we probably are going to lose the series anyways so who cares, let’s see the kid for a few games in high leverage situations. It’s not going to ruin him, that’s hyperbole, its like 2 or 3 games with a chance that hey maybe he can spark something more...He could have signed last year anyways so he was essentially loaned to UMass instead of the AHL and is on the same clock as most of his top peers from his class.

According to Bob McKenzie him just signing the contract will burn the 1st year of his ELC. If he plays a game then he needs to be protected. Very possibly that he signs, practices with the team and never actually suits up.

Also no one has said that Makar makes them an exponentially better team and puts them over the top but he immediately improves the Avalanche’s defence and I don’t think that’s really up for debate.

Why wouldn't he just take a bridge deal, like Subban did, if the team tries to nickel & dime him on a longterm deal? I usually agree with that logic, but Cale is going to make bank on his longterm deal, whether he has to go through a bridge deal to get it, or not.

He had a rough Frozen Four but he's a lot of fun to watch play. Dynamic player that enlivened a dormant hockey program. UMD roughed him up quite a bit tonight and even though he didn't have a good game he didn't back down. UMD was just too much. Should be exciting stuff to see him with the Avs playing alongside guys like MacKinnon and company.

I stopped watching when the Avs game started, but he looked great against DU for as long as I was still tuned in :dunno:

He was better against Denver than UMD for sure, but he's the most talented and dynamic player in college hockey and he didn't play like it in the Frozen Four. His play in 2 games is not an indictment of his talent.

Fair enough, like I said I stopped watching when the avs game started & missed all of last night's final cause I was out...and unlike the avs game, I forgot to record it.

I've just noticed a few folks visit our board in order to lambast Cale for that semifinal performance; when he looked like his typically studly self through the first period/period-n-a-half that I watched...before the whole team apparently started to turtle; which I blame on coaching, rather than individual players. Sure that can be a habit certainly players need to break, but when the collective does it, that's on the coach for not preaching safe-is-death enough.

Though you're right. In the end, two games...or a game in the half if we're really going to get into the weeds on this...against the best that the NCAA has to offer, doesn't really change anything.

Calgary is a very beatable team so they should absolutely play him. I assume he plays tomorrow but sucks I won't be able to catch that game

Will have to record it I suppose

Winning in the playoffs and expansion draft stuff aside, I think getting into these next few games against Calgary could be huge for his development.

Playing his first couple NHL games in the NHL playoffs against his hometown team is going to be a great experience for him. It also gives him a small taste of the speed/intensity that the NHL can get to and it'll give him a good measuring stick for how hard he is going to have to work in the offseason.

The difference was he had to play some NCHC teams in the frozen 4 . St cloud was the top team in the NCHC and rated #1 in the country but did not make . it's much harder to score in some conferences .

will be interesting how he does right off the bat in playoffs

the level of playoffs and aggressiveness of the various games is off the charts in the first round

baptism by fire
