An actual NHL team scouted Extraliga this past season, looked at all the young players there... and decided Ales Cech and Vojtech Hradec are superior prospects to Tomas Galvas.
Tomas paid the price for the most absurdly size-biased draft in recent years, looked like a draft straight up from dead puck era. Cole Hutson and Aron Kiviharju are the only two 5'10" defensemen selected. Both of whom are more advanced in development as of today, compared to Galvas, who still has the body of a 15 year old. But even with that deficit he held more than well against adults in Extraliga, something 1st rounder Jiricek struggled far more with, not to mention the other players drafted out of the league, who all had minor roles at best.
Now whether Galvas can add the much needed weight is the question, and fortunately for him, getting drafted has zero impact on that or his future development. He certainly has areas of his game that need significant improvement and most of them are strenght related.
I have also seen some comparison to Jiri Tichacek, which makes zero sense. Galvas is better in every way as a prospect, Tichacek going undrafted at any given draft he was eligible for was not surprising. Neither makes sense this U18 WC argument. Czech team was horrendous, they lost to both Kazachstan and Slovakia who combined for one project 7th rounder. Galvas still did ok given the circumstances. Not to mention, Galvas was the best Czech defenseman at the U20 WJC, where the Czech team captured bronze and which is a more important tournament compared to the U18s.
tldr; Galvas either makes the progress every Czech user here seems to think he can make and the NHL GMs look like morons in a couple years for selecting behemoths with not even inch of the talent Galvas possesses, or he will be trapped in 15 years' old body for the rest of his life, preventing him from fixing all the strenght related issues.
Aside from Galvas, draft was ok from Czech point of view. Some could have gone higher, some other could have been drafted, but multiple guys I didn't give much chances to did get drafted. so it all made up for it in the end. Still, bittersweet draft solely because of that one missing name...
