It has been a truly spectacular show. Its hard to even describe the journey of the Coyotes and the Megathread - they're beautifully intertwined and I'm so thankful to have been a part of this little corner of the internet.

I'm not sure an awards show is in order here - but perhaps just some quick appreciation... to Jerry Moyes for dreaming big; to James Balsillie for his batcrap crazy BK gambit; to his honor Redfield T. Baum for his earnest rulings; to Bill Daly for his revolver loan takeover clause; to Mayor Scruggs for her visionary leadership; to Ed Beasley for his ability to elude felony indictments; to Ice Edge for their cold hard clown cash; to Matt Hulsizer for his magical parking bonds; to Darin Pastor just for stopping by to join the circus; to Darcy Olsen for her ooey-gooey cupcakes; to Craig Tindall for his aspirations; to Gary Sherwood for his tech savvy email habits; to Team Beavis for their spirit; to Joyce Clark for her awe inspiring economics; to Greg Jamison for his tentative deal; to Anthony LeBlanc for his acute business senses; to George Gosbee for his reverse make-a-wish donation; to Gila River Arena and Mullett Arena for never disappointing a visiting fan; to Coach Tippett for the insane 2012 run to the WCF; to Tempe for the referendum; to voters for their participation; to Alex Meruelo for once again reminding us that distressed assets do not generally attract highly ethical investors; to tortious interference and my airport bead stand...

but mostly, to HFBoards BOH for the dialog and the personalities... I sincerely cherish this place, as bizarre as that may sound. I dont have the same rant energy that my longtime friend M4B does (... even though I do have the same Metal energy; Surf Nicaragua, baby!) - but I will always think of the MegaThread fondly... to those I should have been kinder to, my apologies; to those that might have been kinder to me, all is forgiven.

Cheers - CF
Well. I will speak for my self, though many may follow.

I have always respected your work.
There are many, many days and YEARS spent here, and all of your words have been seen, and read.
I appreciate your opinion. Your aggressive attitude. Your honesty. And your damn patience.

Ban me now. Hell of a ride. Be well always.

holdingpattern... Circa... 2010

Nicely done. I would only add the photo of a shoe.

I'm glad we are within spitting distance of CL. What an odyssey.

I think one major variable that also contributed, is Marty Walsh's criticisms. It came directly after Bettman created the PR that things are working out for Phoenix, only for Marty to crash it down like a House of Cards, and accused the franchise of not even disclosing future plans. And then reports came out about the franchise not even paying their bills. If Marty Walsh doesn't talk, chances are Meruelo gets more leeway, maybe one more year at the Mullet.

This does make me wonder how the BoG and Bettman vets prospective owners, because I find it extremely strange that ownership tends to be a consistent issue with Arizona.
This was likely already in the works when Walsh spoke out. The league was also going to support AZ ownership publicly until a deal was done for legal reasons. That is just how things work.

Attendance wise they are 6th worst in the league.

Average attendance appears to be lower than what Mullet would be at capacity. I'm not saying it's a dissapointment, quick google search shows Tucson can hold 6,791. So, is 66% capacity really a success? Just being honest here.
Also... A neat

Neat! The fact that you googled it is great. Mullett (never been) and I wish I coulda, is now off my 4 remaining nhl rinks to visit.
So .. Point being.. I wish hope think Tucson should be able to see the team in Tucson. Not because the AM needs a diaper. Cause he pooped.

You think the threads are ending just because the Coyotes are going dormant?

They will go on long after all of us here are dead and gone.

Alright, I was just merely commenting on your note about success in Tucson.......

Maybe a team that is doing well should not be moved? Like... Just pause and think. Team good. Crowd good.
No team...
No crowd. No people who know the team.

It really isn't a wonder why this shit is happening.
Next lesson.... ?

I don’t know how would happen but I feel like the thing to do would’ve been to have an AHL team in both Tempe and Tucson. I don’t know who else would move their affiliate in there though. It’s obviously not a replacement but it would be better for continued engagement in the market.

AHL doesn’t have to approve that move, do they?
ANY transfer of territory has to be approved through the AHL, as it is with any existing member club since it's the League that is in essence leasing the team to any ownership group, whether private or corporate as the way the League operates.... same as what you saw in the E, when the League terminated Newfoundland due to the financial collapse of Deacon Sports.... all AM would have to do is propose a transfer of territory from Tucson to Tempe/ASU.... I doubt there will be much opposition and as long as the AHL recognizes SEG should the affiliation continue between the two despite the difference shortly of not having both the Coyotes/RR's UNDER THE Same ownership.... unless the decision is made to split the existing PDC between the two franchises or member clubs as they're defined legally.... I can't see the AHL not agreeing if the PDC is still in effect as Arizona has had their affiliate outside of Tucson prior to buying the RR's IN 2014 (which they had a 2 yr option that was exercised in 2014) as it had been private ownership.

transfer of territory is how Maine (Portland) got a team back in 2018; Comcast owns the team but the Rangers and Boston are solely affiliates after years of private ownership as the current E Franchise originally was in Alaska before the economic downturn there ended pro sports in that state.... almost cancelled college sports up there as well

As someone who's been here (lurking at first) since before the "Make it Seven" relocation to Hamilton gambit... I can confirm that it was for sure a wild journey.

The good news is that now that it's over someone can write the book on it. I especially hope the book pays close attention to the few times Bettman or Daly went in person to the Glendale City Council to swindle them for 25 millions a few years in a row to keep the team there a few extra years.

It was truly bizarre. What's certain is that I will never, EVER forget the neverending Coyotes Megathreads!

All before he bought two hotel/casinos in Nevada.

His rep in AZ may be bad now but unless similar things have happened in Nevada he won’t be looked at there the same way.

And he still has the AHL team. Could become something better out of it.
Tim Leiweke is already in the process of building a 20,000 seat arena/hotel/casino on the southside of the Strip. Spent like $3 billion on the land already and the entire project is going to be $10 billion. Says he won't need a single tax dollar. Meruelo doesn't stand a chance, even with a billion in cash on hand.

I don’t see Meruelo expanding in Vegas.

But he announced plans for a 10,000 seat arena on his Reno property along with $2.5 billion in upgrades (including an additional tower) over ten years.

That raised a few eyebrows…. Wondering how he was going to pull both projects off.

It’s not giving him a chance as it is covering their own asses.

They had no direct way to remove him as owner or force him to sell. That would have triggered “the mother of all lawsuits” and Meruelo has already shown himself to be quite aggressive in that realm.

So they went the appeasement route and made what’s been referred to as a “godfather offer”.

Dangle a billion dollar carrot in front of him. Let him keep the rights to the Arizona market for the next five years (provided he can meet some yet unknown requirements).

They appealed to his ego. Keep him happy. Let him stay on the BoG (sitting in a chair in the corner of the room)

But at the same time they will still get a $1.2 billion expansion fee they would have got for SLC in the long run. And avoid getting their asses hauled off to court.

Step 3 - Profit.
Good points.

On Meruelo’s side, I expect he will try to milk anything he can out of these rights before they expire in 5 years, and having observer status at BOG meetings will make it easy for him to get full wind of any expansion plans the league might entertain for those 5 years. As long as Meruelo can at least try to maintain that a new arena is still in the works I can’t see the league expanding anywhere during that time.

Tangent to this, I have always believed that one reason why Bettman did everything he could to keep the Coyotes in Arizona for so long is that he didn’t want to give Balsillie any chance of arguing in court that the league wasn’t against moving the team but against Balsillie moving it. This time, I don’t think the league will be in any hurry to return to Arizona anyway, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that goes well beyond 5 years to prevent the possibility of Meruelo threatening to claim that the league deliberately waited until after his 5 year rights expired just to shut him out.

Something I always considered, and now am deeply inclined to believe: the Roadrunners will be playing at Grand Sierra soon after the arena is finished. His new pay day will cover every single dollar of the project costs he announced late last year.

Casino owners can afford to operate those kinds of "attractions" at a perpetual loss because they just need attractions to be present. The whole strategy of casinos is that something is always happening for everyone, so don't leave the casino. Oh, the room wasn't clean? Here are some tickets to the hockey game. We double charged you? Refund will hit your bank tomorrow but here is tickets to the hockey game.

Reno is large enough to support an AHL franchise but the tourism would keep a 10,000 seat arena at least halfway filled on the worst nights. I mean hell, if he comped tickets to every guest at his resort, the arena would be half full every night and who's collecting on food and beverage?

Just makes too much sense, especially since he only has "17-18 dates" filled at the moment.

Possibly, but would there have been the urgency to push for relocation if Marty doesn't say what he said? I highly doubt it. NHL/Bettman often maintain the status quo until a situation becomes untenable, and PR-wise, Bettman was committed to making Arizona work to the bitter end. Additionally, from Utah's POV, you'd want them to have an expansion given that 1) the expansion fee is more valuable than relocation fee, 2) the amount of talent right now lends itself to Utah being a more successful franchise from the get-go as we've seen with Seattle and Vegas.

Not saying you couldn't do it with the Coyotes pre-existing picks, prospects, RFAs, and additional contracts, but that means you also inherit their bad contracts that they exploited to get around cap floor. More work to go from where Phoenix was, to a competitive team basically.

They don’t have any cap floor exploitive contracts other than Weber

The PA didn't make a secret out of not liking the situation before Walsh's comments.

It's more likely Walsh knew this was potentially in the cards.

I still can't believe the Jets got in the door for $170 million. That's like a 99.9% ROI for them in franchise values.

Atlanta Sprit effectively pissing away $1 billion dollars makes me smile.
The fees inflation from early 2010s to now has been something to behold (and even more so if you wanna bring up the last major expansion back in the late 90s early 00s). I never would've expected that expansion would cost $1 billion. 170mil is a lot of money by 2010 standards, but 1bil seems prohibitively expensive, and talks of potentially a 2bil buy-in????

Insanity.

We can't forget the Goldwater Institute, who's lawsuit killed Jamison's chances of having the Glendale taxpayers help him finance his purchase and keep the team in the arena long term. They even got John McCain involved at one point.

If the hack craig just keeps sitting.. Smiled. Cried. Laugh. No sorry criiiied. No smiled. Peety is a fricken mess.
This is the picture the rest of the followers see.

I wouldn’t judge them o harsh…. There’s stuff coming from them soon.

Petey is considering unloading on everything….. he was the video coach for 20+ years and knows where some of the skeletons are buried across the many ownerships.

Craig’s hinting he’s been getting messages from people who were on the inside too.

Sadly ASG unloaded the Hawks at a definite profit, at least over what they paid (I guess it's always possible they lost $55 mil annually in between...who knows with that bunch). While I was happy to have them out of the Atlanta ownership picture, it p.o.'ed me how much they made off with in that deal.

I have a feeling the real stories behind this franchise's history will take years and years to unspool...
